I have started similar threads before but they do not seem to catch fire. Anyhow, since I love books even more than hitting a 15-1 winning by a "short head" (dunno the proper american horse jargon, sorry) I will give it another try.
"The Odds" is required reading and some episodes/short stories from Damon Runyon (spelling?) and Bukowski is very funny but since they are just episodes I'll omit them. Merchants "National Fotball Lottery" is quite nice. "Confessions of an Ivy League Bookie" might be worth tracking down. So is "Memoire of the Bookie's Son". Except for "The Odds" they're probably all out of print. Too bad! I have a rather well filled gambling book section in my private library but I am not very impressed with the "average" nonfiction betting book. Field's "College Basketball betting" (not the exact title), Wongs book "Sharp Sports Betting" and Murray's book an baseball are all quite good and books I often re-read. There are a few good reads (fiction and nonfiction) on horse racing but I havn't been involved seriously in betting the ponies for several years. Some of my books on the ponies are stored away so I'm afraid I cannot refresh my memory and provide any recommendations Any suggestions on good gambling books are most appreciated. |
