Default L.I. Woman Buried Under House Full of Debris, Human, Animal Waste

Human, Animal Waste

WOODMERE, N.Y. (AP) -- The stench inside the bungalow cape was unbearable. Debris mixed with human and animal waste was piled high in the every room, some all the way to the ceiling. Buried beneath all the rubbish was the owner, detectable only by her feet and her moans.

Volunteer firefighters responded to the two-story house, in a tidy middle-class neighborhood, after relatives told police they couldn't reach her.

The woman, whose name was not released, was described as being about 85 years old, and in frail and poor condition when firefighters found her Thursday evening.

"A six-foot pile of rubbish collapsed on her and trapped her in there,'' said Erik Kinney, a volunteer firefighter. He said it wasn't clear how long she might have been trapped but neighbors said they last saw her about a week ago.

There was garbage - "cans, boxes, clothing, papers, whatever you can collect in every room, some spots to the ceiling, some three feet to the ceiling,'' Kenney said. "Feces - raccoon, possum and human'' were found in buckets and in the trash.

"The stench was very strong, as you can imagine,'' he added.

Kenney said authorities received a report of a second person - a visitor - possibly trapped inside. To expedite matters, firefighters cut through an exterior front wall of the house "and started removing the debris and going through it,'' Kenney said. But no one else was found.

He said he was not at liberty to say anything about the woman's injuries, except to characterize her as "in poor condition.''

Firefighters extricated her by "removing articles piece by piece'' after spotting her feet sticking out from beneath the rubbish and hearing her moans.

She was talking but not making sense, Kenney said. The woman was taken to a local hospital.

A call to the buildings department in Hempstead Town, which has jurisdiction over Woodmere, was not immediately returned.
