even worse was the box and one they got in to "stop cdr?" and they got burnt for 5 straight points as memphis just filled in the gaps. when they got out of man and went box/1 i swear i almost saw all my money flash before my eyes.

You guys are idiots. Recruiting is 80% of the game in college hoops and these guys are great at it.
Also, there aren't many coaches who could get the amount of talent on one team like Self did and get them play unselfish TEAM basketball. These guys play great defense.

i'll be honest as i have no idea who had the top ranked recruiting class this season at all, but i do know that memphis' offense feeds off plays the either start or end around 8 feet from the basket in the half court set.
kansas lead the nation in 5 different defensive stats.they may have the best defensive guards in the country.i dont think anyone was denying that. i thought they played very very well defensively so i was shocked with that call by self, that's all. their help defense with the exception of a few lapses on the baseline was great all night. i just thought that call gave life to memphis where there shouldnt have been any

As I have said before, there is a difference between a great coach/teacher of the game and a great recruiter. He recruits great players and he is a good salesman, no question about it. I have no hatred towards Self. I think he's a lot less egregious and revolting than many others. I lament that the game has changed and it's about recruiting and not teaching as much as it used to be. Self is not a great teacher. He is a product of the new era in college basketball. You don't have to be a teacher any more, you have to be a salesman to get the best talent.

Winning the national title is a great accomplishment, but it does not make you a great coach IMO. Players do win games and titles more than coaches nowadays. No disrespect to Villanova, which is a fine institution, but does anyone really think Rollie Massimino is a great coach or teacher of the game of basketball? If you do, seek professional help immediately. I'm sure when every shot Villanova threw in during the 2nd half (which was about every one) was all Rollie's coaching in the 85 game against G Town.

Lute Olson is another example. He is not a great coach. If you remember them for their triumphs, you have to remember their losses as well. Lute's bad losses and obvious mistakes in game management over the years far outweigh his one national title.

There are some coaches that won it all that are geniuses (i.e. Hank Iba, Pete Newell, Bob Knight, Al McGuire, Fred Taylor, and I guess you would have to count Wooden (even though he had the best talent that Sam Gilbert could buy) and some others. Then, there are some overrated guys like Olson, Massimino, Roy Williams and others.

There are plenty of better coaches that never won it that I would rate well ahead of some of these guys who are true pioneers and overlooked legends like Clair Bee and Joe Lapchick.

You can't just judge a coach on national titles or final scores. You have to look at how a team plays.

You can disagree with my comments, but they are not ridiculous.

that may have been imo the only defensive decision that was poor. i was a little to amped up in my response as well and appologize.
oh i dont think he is some bad coach. that team clearly is a sum of its parts team and that takes coaching.

calipari lost that game multiple times despite the free throws.
his whole "princeton on steroids" bs is nonsense as its just unselfish motion which, although today with one and done offensive possessions seems novel, is just fundamentals imo.
"princeton on steroids" my ass. steroids work, but that shit is a gimmick. he had the best team on the floor and his "offense" allows him NOT to coach so when he had to be strategic you saw how well he COULD coach.
thats coaching today, just try to get the best players and roll the ball out on the floor. excuse, thats not all coaches, but with the play you see today can lead you to feel that way at times

No bigge all the way around. I'm a little emotional right now about the big win. Self isn't a great X & O guy, but I think a successful coach involves recruiting, running a good system, teaching at practice, and managing the game.
I still don't understand the Box & One, and Self would be answering a lot of questions about it right now if they hadn't pulled it out.
