The Lions new one-cut zone running scheme installed by offensive coordinator Jim Colletto is the same scheme rookie RB Kevin Smith excelled in at UCF.
UCF offensive coordinator Tim Salem once worked under Colletto at Purdue, so Smith seems tailor made for the Lions system. This could be a significant advantage for the rookie in his efforts to take over the starting position from Tatum Bell. May. 3 - 9:51 a.m. ET

Third-round rookie Kevin Smith is "the guy who is expected to be the starter" at running back for Detroit, according to MLive.com's Tom Kowalski.
Tatum Bell reported overweight and Brian Calhoun has hardly played since being drafted in 2006. Still, coach Rod Marinelli believes in competition. It's hard to imagine Smith having an upperhand this early in the offseason. May. 9 - 4:21 p.m. ET

Rookie Kevin Smith has reportedly impressed the Lions' coaching staff with his attention to detail and understanding of the passing game.

Coach Rod Marinelli calls Smith "a gym rat" and says he's "really going to add to that (backfield) mix." The Lions think Smith can excel in blitz pickup, a crucial skill for rookies. They won't know for sure until the pads go on. May. 19 - 10:44 a.m. ET

Blocking has never been a strong suit for Tatum Bell, so the rookie could have a leg up on the competition for No. 1 running back. Though Smith added that he would like to spend some time in the slot eventually, we wouldn't count on seeing that any time soon. Aug. 1

MLive.com's Tom Kowalski believes that the Lions are confident Kevin Smith can be a more effective runner than Rudi Johnson.

Kowalski expects Johnson's carry total to increase by the week, but Smith to continue playing a major role. Smith will probably keep his starting job as long as he holds up. He'd still be a very weak RB2 play Sunday vs. Green Bay. Sep. 11
