Fantasy Football Mock Draft For 2007
Time To Give Them Respect: Tomlinson, Johnson and Alexander are obvious top 3 picks, especially L.T. and L.J., but it is time to give players like Steven Jackson, Frank Gore and Willie Parker the respect that they deserve. All three rushers were amazing in 2006, but because fantasy owners drafted Gore in the 4-7 round-range, he was one of last year's biggest surprises. It's funny, we get at least a few Frank Gore Ask The Expert questions per week, as so many doubt that the SF RB plays this well in 2007. Well, those doubters are probably hating on Gore because they didn't see his fantasy-rise approaching... don't be one of those owners. This game is about observing, re-evaluating and adjusting. Turner produces a stud back every single year. If you rely on Gore in 2007, just be sure you grab back-up running backs Maurice Hicks and Michael Robinson. Holding 3RBs will be kind of tough in leagues that require smaller rosters, but it is important to secure that entire S.F. backfield, as it is truly the system, not the runner, that matters. Sure, Gore is probably the most gifted runner of the three, but that system is the real reason for his success. Does that matter? No, you aren't just drafting the running back all by himself, you are drafting the entire package. Priest Holmes was in the same situation... he played in an tremendous system, and while his talent had a lot to do with his success, the system is the real reason Holmes was an absolute machine in this game of fantasy football. Again, that doesn't matter, at least not in fantasy football. Norv Turner comes along with Frank Gore when you draft him, and his job appears to be secure for the moment, so the SF rushing attack should be fantastic for the next few years. Others to give respect to include: Reggie Bush, Maurice Jones-Drew, Joseph Addai, Chester Taylor, Drew Brees and Marques Colston. Colston was probably fantasy football's biggest WR surprise in 2006 - expect him to continue to shine in 2007... the same goes for Brees. Maurice Jones-Drew and Reggie Bush could be huge in 2007. Both turned it on down the stretch in 2006... Drew had 15TDs through week 17 and Bush finished with a respectable eight. Expect both RBs to go in the middle-late 2nd round in most early 2007 mocks. Our guess is that the value of both backs will increase as we near the 2007 season. Potential Breakout Players: Adrian Peterson, depending on where he lands in the April NFL Draft, could be a huge surprise in '07. Now, the trend with rookie RBs over the past couple years has been to play quiet early and then finish strong. Examples range from Kevin Jones and Julius Jones (in their rookie years back in 2004) to Reggie Bush, Joseph Addai and Maurice Jones-Drew in 2006. Prediction: Adrian Peterson changes that trend and lands in a situation that allows him to domination early and often. Peterson should have a monster rookie season. I wouldn't be surprised if he surpassed 1,100 rushing yards and had 10-12TDs. Other possible breakout players include: Cedric Benson, DeAngelo Williams, Laurence Maroney and Tony Romo. All three RBs could start heading into 2007... if they do, they will play like 2nd round picks at the cost of 3rd, 4th and 5th rounders. Romo could be on the verge of exploding... make sure he is on your sleeper list in '07. We are thinking Romo could have the kind of season that Carson Palmer had in his breakout campaign back in 2005. Potential Busts: The top three RBs that have "bust" written all over them are Cadillac Williams, Edgerrin James and Jamal Lewis. Al three were major busts in 2006, yet they will most likely find their way into some late-second and a lot of third rounds in 2007 drafts. We'd recommend avoiding these RBs early, unless any of their situations drastically change - let someone else take on the risk. Other fantasy players worth mentioning, while on the topic of busts, are: Mike Bell and Tatum Bell. For all we know, head coach Mike Shanahan will draft another rusher in 2007, or he might bring in a big-name free agent. That is his style! Even if he doesn't, Shanny doesn't seem happy rolling with just one rusher anymore. That is a messy situation and you could see a two-headed running crew in 2007 and beyond. Even more potential busts: Kevin Jones has a nasty foot injury, one that has shortened the career of a lot of athletes. Avoid him in early drafts until his status is clear. Detroit may end up drafting another RB just in case Jones, or Calhoun (ACL), aren't ready. We doubt that DET drafts a RB in the first round, but they will most likely address the position via the 2007 April NFL draft - this would ultimately hurts Kevin Jones' value. Bust or Bounce-Back? I'd like to leave off with Domanick Davis, now known as Domanick Williams. The Texans' rusher has legally changed his last name to Williams, his mother's maiden name. The back plans to enter the season wearing #31 and claims that he is very close to being 100% healthy. This should be an interesting off-season with players like Davis in fantasy limbo. Our guess is that he will be undervalued early on and could end up being a steal in 4th-5th rounds in 2007 drafts. Possible 5th rounders worth mentioning, but due to situations and injuries, they are listed in no particular Order:
