I just do not get enough action on tv to keep me involved in NHL. Looks like it will be fun for the playoffs once again only. And I am jealous of you people who get to see many games and have the thrill of fan-ship toward this sport. I do not even know if we will get much playoff action down here any more.

Hockey was watched in the US in the 80s and 90s, but it was ruined by expansion (Thanks Bettman).. Expansion watered down the talent level, and guys who had no business being NHL players went to clutching and grabbing to slow the game down and this became a popular strategy for bad teams, but it was horrible to watch for fans. |

Having grown up playing and watching hockey, I know exactly what you mean about the US version of fans. It was even tougher when I moved out here to SoCal from Minnesota in 85. No one even knew what hockey was out here. At least last year we finally had some excitement with the Ducks winning the cup.
As PL said though, DirecTV Center Ice is the best! Now I get all the games I want to see (and wager upon) and in HD it's even better! It made me buy an even bigger TV last year just to get closer to the action. BOL to all!! larz |

You'd probably enjoy living in Canada my friend. There's nothing but hockey on TSN and Sportsnet throughout the week. Then you got Hockey Night in Canada on CBC on saturday, which will give you at least 2 back to back games. It seems the average 30 minute edition of Sportscenter has about 20 minutes worth of hockey.

Qtip is right, come live here in Canada. Hockey is first and foremost. ALL sportscasts talk hockey first with scores and highlights from all games. We get FULL coverage of the upcoming World Junior championships on TSN (this year in Czech Rep where we have won the last four gold medals). The draft is covered in detail and we suffer through lockouts. I see hockey most nights and we all watch HNIC Sat night, usually for a double header (east coast then west coast). I do not understand why americans get all pumped up about basketball and NASCAR, but not about hockey.

I don't think they show the World Junior Championships in the U.S. unless the U.S. team is playing. Luckily I'll be in Toronto for the entire tournament.

I remember the Canadian team from the 2005 WJHC tournament. Sidney Crosby, Dion Phaneuf, Patrice Bergeron, Ryan Getzlaf, Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Brent Seabrook, Shea Weber, Corey Perry and so on...just a stacked team. I specifically remember the gold medal game against Russia with Ovechkin and Malkin when Canada won 6-0 or something like that. Ovechkin was getting absolutely rocked by Phaneuf and the rest of the Canadians every time he touched the puck. By the 2nd period it looked like he was scared to come on the ice.

Qtip - yes Canada knew that Ovechkin was the star for Russia and made sure that everytime he touched the puck he got pounded. By the end, he was frustrated and pointless. It's a great tournament that even when it is held in the US (like Boston previously) does not even sell out. In Canada it is standing room only for every game. You see the NHLers of tomorrow at that tournament.
Great avatar Qtip, who is she? |

I agree Pete!
Although I have taken the Wings tonight and watched (NHL Center Ice) as they dismantled the Kings, and laid coin on Dallas and Colorado the 2 previous nights to watch them take their opponents as well..... IMHO NHL Hockey is the bomb! Love watchin it!!!! PL |
