Default Free Agency Begins Saturday

The opening of the NHL Free Agency period begins Saturday with several big names to test the waters. The most prolific position available this year will be defenseman with Chara, Redden, Jovanoski, Blake, Mckee, and Witt all poised to test the market. Lidstrom will probably resign with Detroit but the Pronger sweepstakes will be interesting to watch. Pronger asked for a trade from the Edmonton Oilers and almost all NHL teams will be interested. He carries a heavy price tag which may somewhat limit the bidding but his defensive prowess is exceptional.

Only thing I can say is cable tv in the United States needs to get more NHL reg season games on the tube.

Couldn't agree more General. I get the NHL Center Ice package every year so it's not really an issue with me but the coverage would do the league good.

One down as Redden resigns with the Sens.

The Hockeys News reports:

"Defenseman Wade Redden and the Ottawa Senators have reached an agreement on a two-year deal worth $13 million, according to TSN.

The 29-year-old Redden could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but he had previously made public his intentions to re-sign with the only club he has played for during his nine-year NHL career.

In 694 NHL games, the Lloydminster, Sask. native has 88 goals, 336 points and is a plus-147. Last season, Redden posted 10 goals and 50 points in 65 games. He was also a plus-35, which tied for tops in the league."
