Channel 215 Not a big Hockey Fan but just a FYI if you are a Fan... NHL Network (United States) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search
[edit] Development As a result of the agreement between the NHL and U.S. cable company Comcast that places NHL games on its Versus network (known at the time of the deal as OLN), the American version of NHL Network has been in development as a joint venture between the NHL and Comcast. [1]. The NHL Network in the United States will share about 90 percent of the same programming as the Canadian version, the only difference being which live games the networks will be able to show. NHL Network is the third U.S. cable network devoted to a major sports league. NBA TV launched in 1999 with NFL Network following in 2003. Major League Baseball is planning a network of its own to launch in 2009. [edit] Carriage agreements Comcast, owner of cable networks Versus, E! Entertainment Television and G4, is also one of the largest operators of cable systems in the United States. The company was contractually obligated to have NHL Network on its systems by summer 2007 at the latest, so it should have been available in the United States beginning with the 2007-08 NHL season. If the deadline was not met, Comcast likely owed a $15 million penalty to the NHL. [2] Both Comcast and the NHL had an option to end their contract after the 2006-07 season, which would have voided Comcast's obligation to launch a U.S. version of NHL Network.[3] Since its official launch in the United States, the NHL Network announced on October 8, 2007 its plans to begin airing that month through carriage agreements with Cablevision, Charter, Comcast, Cox Communications, DirecTV, Dish Network and Time Warner Cable. [4] DirecTV has aired NHL Network on channel 215 since October 31, 2007, and Dish Network airs it on channel 559. Reportedly, the eventual plan is to operate a separate control center for the U.S. network, which would be in Washington, D.C.[citation needed] [edit] Ad Campaign In late October 2007, it was revealed that the NHL signed a contract with a well known ad agency to start an American ad campagn for the Network's U.S. audience. It is said it will be directed toward "misplaced hockey fans", and it will debut in mid-November in various outlets such as TV and print. [edit] Production note Unlike other sports networks, scores and other information are not updated on a ticker at any point in the broadcast day. Viewers are told to go to the NHL website for this information. [edit] References NHL Network (United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
