Excellent Art must overcome a less than stellar post in Saturday's $2.63 million Breeders' Cup Mile at Monmouth Park.
An English invader, Excellent Art has one win and two seconds in four starts this year, making him a legitimate threat here. He was blocked in the stretch in his last race - the Queen Elizabeth Stakes - but managed to fly home and finish second. But a major obstacle for Excellent Art, who has been tabbed the 3-1 morning-line favorite, is that he drew post 13 in the 14-horse field. "It's not good," said jockey John Murtagh, who is replacing Jamie Spencer. "Not good at all." If Excellent Art can avoid traffic, he could be in line to reach the winner's circle due to his penchant for closing well. At 7-2, the second choice is After Market, who has four wins in eight starts this year. After starting his career in California, After Market came East to finish second in the Kelso Handicap at Belmont. Trained by John Shirreffs, After Market will leave from the third gate with Alex Solis in the irons. Another contender likely will be Jeremy, a hard-hitting, consistent colt from Britain. The 4-year-old has one win and hit the board in three of his five starts this year. Nobiz Like Shobiz, who was 10th in the Kentucky Derby, is listed at 8-1 for trainer Barclay Tagg. Also entered are Kip Deville (6-1), Trippi's Storm (8-1), Remarkable News (12-1), Cosmonaut (15-1), Purim (20-1), Icy Atlantic (30-1), Host (30-1), My Typhoon (30-1) and Silent Name (30-1).
