Discreet Cat will be out for redemption in Friday's inaugural $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Monmouth Park.
A flashy colt, Discreet Cat won his first six starts before suffering resounding defeats in his last two outings. After finishing seventh in the Dubai World Cup in March, the 4-year-old colt was third in the Vosburgh Handicap on September 30. "We feel he's at the top of his game going into the Monmouth race," said Rick Mettee, an assistant for Godolphin racing who has been overseeing Discreet Cat's training at Belmont Park. Oddsmakers believe Discreet Cat will recapture his previous form since he has been tabbed the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the nine-horse field that will cover one mile and 70 yards. Expected to challenge Discreet Cat will be Corinthian, who will be looking to rebound from a fourth-place showing in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga in his last start on September 1. He did win the Met Mile at Belmont in May. Kent Desormeaux will be aboard Corinthian, who will leave from the eighth post for trainer Jimmy Jerkens. Hoping to use his early speed to his advantage, High Finance (5-1) is the third choice for trainer Richard Violette Jr. John Velazquez, who has won six Breeders' Cup races in his career, will be aboard High Finance, who breaks from the fifth post. Also entered are Lewis Michael (6-1), Xchanger (6-1), Gottcha Gold (8-1), Wanderin Boy (8-1), Park Avenue Ball (15-1) and Forefathers (20-1).
