No chance to be 2007 HOFer. Spend the money, I dont see him getting 25% of the vote. Its a shame too, he deserves to be in. He did nothing against the rules at the time he was playing. He is one of the lead witches in this witch hunt.

If he never did anything wrong how come he went into a bathroom stall to have a teammate shoot him up on steroids with a needle? Why didn't he just have the team trainer shoot him up?

He made millions by cheating and then took the fifth. Poor guy.

And lets stop this which hunt. Steroids are good for teenagers!

Where was it written that steroids were a banned substance in MLB?

How many of the pitchers that pitched against him were "shooting up"?

If steroids only help hitters hit the ball longer, then why have most of the violations in the minors been against pitchers?

While he may have used performance enhancing substances, where was it written that it was against the rules?

Should we take Gaylord Perry out of the HOF because he used to play tricks with the ball (which WAS against the rules)?

How many guys used some sort of amphetamines to get themselves up for a game after a late night drinking?


Everyone is going after the steroids power hitters, yet no one wants to say anything about the rest. Unless he cheated (or bet on baseball) that should not be held against him.

It would be fine with me if Gaylord Perry wasn't in the Hall.

Mark McGwire never deserves to be in the HOF...the clown had almost as Many HR's as he did singles...only had 1400 RBIs...LOL..he had almost 600 HR's so who the hell did he drive in? that is crazy...lifetime .263 batting average and a .394 OPS... laughable stats for the HOF...the clown was almost out of bases hitting in the low 200 before he started with the Juice again and went to SL...His Career is on Par with Dave Kingmans and he is nowhere near the HOF

Amphetamines are illegal as well, but they were used by most major leaguers as well. Using your argument, no one that ever used amphetamines should be in the hall either. It would be a pretty empty hall that way. While steroids and amphetamines were illegal, they were not against the rules to use by MLB players. You can keep him out using dirtys logic, not due to anything he used in his system.

They were not against the rules? You think MLB's rules are how we should judge people? Suppose a player gets arrested with cases of illegal human growth hormones? What does he do, tell the judge screw off, they're not against Don Fehr's rules? These steroids require a doctor's prescription and are supposed to be used only to help injured people recover.

You have no sense of ethics what so ever. Fuck MLB's rules. If a player breaks the law to give himself an unfair advantage, he pays the price.

Culver- I notice you completely disregard my comment regarding amphetamines. They are also illegal, yet players that used them have been inducted into the HOF. You make it sound like MM is the only player to use steroids. As I said before, both pitchers and hitters have used steroids, and some will be inducted into the HOF. Don Fehr is not my moral compass, I think hes an a-hole and is part of the downfall of baseball. But, if one player that used steroids is let in, then you can no longer use that as a reason not to let a player in.

The HOF is for acheivements on the field, not off. So yes, when it comes to the HOF, what a person does off the field does not count. Unless, you want to remove Lawrence Taylor for the NFL HOF.

Actually, off-field behavior is considered a factor in the voting process. Read the rules.

Rule 5
Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contribution to the team(s) on which the player played.

That list is impossible on both accounts Culver. We will never know if Mantle, Mays, Aaron, etc...that used amphetamines admittadly would have had the same career without the extra pick me up.... It is a Hypthetical...And it is a Hypothetical to say someone wouldn't have the same stats without steroids....because we can't replay the seasons of the players again clean.

I don't think he is if you look at every other Category involved. he was not a great Player. He was a great Power Hitter. His Average, RBI's, OBP, and Slugging Percentage are not what Most other Hall of Famers are that were sluggers. His Career was all but over Until the Juice (andro or whatever) and he had a resurgence. Unlike Bonds who was a HOF'er anyway before his late career Power Numbers. Bonds has been consistant hi whole career hitting HR's, Rbi's, Average, Slugging, Walks, Etc..


No way I could Vote for Mcgwire if I found out for sure His numbers were Juiced after taking the stuff. Bonds Had 500 before he started taking the crap. Mcgwire was a washed up, injury prone power Hitter until his resurgence. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Through the '94 season, at which point he was 30 years old, his BA was .249 and AB/HR ratio was 14.0; thereafter they were .275 and 8.2. Did he literally get better in his 30's, as opposed to his 20's, or was his improvement completely steroid-fueled?

A statue of Bud Selig is being erected in Milwaukee?
They're kidding, right?
Every time I inch closer to agreeing that steroid users should be banned from the Hall of Fame, something happens to keep me inclined toward voting for them.
A proposed statue of Bud Selig is the latest of those somethings.
Isn't that like the Cy Young Award being renamed the Roger Clemens Award or Barry Bonds winning a Nobel Prize for fair play?
Seriously, I'm supposed to quit voting for Mark McGwire for the Hall of Fame, but the Brewers can build a monument to Bud Selig?
I understand that Selig will receive this honor because Milwaukee might not have Major League Baseball without him.
Still, isn't this the same Bud Selig who was the commissioner of the steroids era?
If the CEO of another business didn't protect its integrity any better than Selig did baseball's, he would have been fired in disgrace a decade ago.
Yet Selig remains commissioner to this day.
That's why I disagree with fans who don't want cheaters in Cooperstown. I understand the sentiment. I vote for McGwire every year he's on the ballot but don't really want him in the Hall.
What I do want is equal enforcement of all our anger. Punishing only premier players is too selective.
Maybe 10 to 12 performed well enough for Hall consideration and they would be the only people in all of baseball held accountable for the era.
Among those who wouldn't be are owners and upper-management types who still are prospering now from being irresponsible then.
That includes everybody from Jerry Reinsdorf to John Schuerholz to Tony La Russa to - well, to just about everybody in the game at the time.
If you guaranteed that others from the era never would make the Hall, I'll stop voting for players who used steroids. But let's face it. Selig will get in his first time on the ballot.
Many express opposition to the McGwires getting into Cooperstown, yet they aren't concerned with the Seligs getting there.
Essentially, your e-mails tell me, that's because the McGwires actually used steroids and the Seligs didn't.
Sorry, but that logic isn't logical enough for me.
The commissioner, owners, general managers and managers had to know - just had to know - that players were using performance enhancers. Still, they did little or nothing.
The counter to that argument is that they had no choice because the players union blocked drug testing.
Ah, but it seems to me that CEO Selig could have done quite a bit.
First, he privately could have encouraged others in the game to report to MLB security their suspicions that specific players were using.
Second, to embarrass the union into action Selig could have used his pulpit to emphasize the severity of the problem to the public and the media.
Finally, instead of waiting for Congress to get involved, Selig could have asked his college roommate, U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, to involve it sooner.
That would have helped the game, but instead Selig chose not to jeopardize cash flow.
Folks, I'll start punishing the McGwires when others stop erecting statues of the Seligs.
