What are my risks?

Could someone help answer a few questions?

If you are just a small time player that bets becuase he likes the action, are there alot of risks. I've never used Netteller, or whatever. Money just transfers straight out of my bank account. Should I not do it this way?

Also, with just a few hundred dollars in my online account, what happens if they stop doing business with US customers? Do I lose my money? Will it be transferred to another account?

Finally, is online gambling illegal? This may seem like a stupid question, but I have read the new anti-gambling bills just target the money being transferred. If I was sitting in a public place, making bets, can I get fined, arrested, ticketed for this?

It seems several of you know the laws and current situation much better than myself. Any help would be appreciated.

By the way, EOG has been a great help and a lot of fun to read over the last couple of months. Not only have I learned a lot about gambling, but I have gotten a lot of great picks. Good luck to EOG in the future.

Re: What are my risks?

hawkfan--for some reason, I have trouble believing you. Don't be upset by that I don't believe a lot of what I read.

I'm guessing you are like me - a small player. And as such, our worries are probably reduced by the high rollers.
That being said and not to scare either of us--I fear the US just wants to somehow someway get a little guy to "hang". Excuse my language, but it's the high rollers that have ruined what we, the little guys enjoy!
Best of luck and don't take all that you read on these forums as "gospel"

Re: What are my risks?

hawk,

At this time your (all of us too...) options are very limited.

Bank transfers and WU should be ok. But, do not be suprised if they run into problems soon.

As to balances. Well... to date the books that have ceased US business have been the more reputable sort and everyone has been paid, except for BOS.

The telling difference is that the books that have ceased US-facing business were all of the reptuable sort save one... you guessed it - BOS.

I think it really depends upon which books you have accounts. Name who you use and see what feedback they bring (or do a search here and other sites).

As to online gambling... well, several states have an express prohibition so, in those states it is illegal. Recently, the Federal government passed legislation that sort of made online gambling illegal. Dumbasses that they are, they are not stupid. They could not enforce a ban on gambling so are attacking the money transfer mechanisms. That is where they are having great success.

To date, I believe there has been exactly 1 person (North Dakota I believe) in the US that was convicted of placing wagers (do not think it was online, but I am not that familiar with the case).

Bottom line - Be careful. Do not have money in accounts that you cannot afford to lose. Watch who you have accounts with. Be VERY CAREFUL as we approach the Superbowl. Any book with an off line should be avoided like the plague. More than likely they will pack up after the game.

Good Luck,
Joe

Re: What are my risks?

Thanks for the replies . . .

I have been using Bodog. I would guess they are reputable, but from what I have heard, so was Pinnacle.

Anyways, its hard to believe anyone could get in trouble for online gambling. No one seems to really know what is right or wrong.

Re: What are my risks?

Dude...

there are a great many risks to all of us gamblers!

I am currently moving all my money out of off shores..I will keep about 20% of my bankroll offshore because i will need that to buy back some plays i will be making at half time...And where you ask will i be gambling now?

I am considering renting an apartment in vegas for about 2 or 3 months until the NBA season runs out (or my bank roll drops below my cutoff)..

But i have been to vegas before and it is hard as hell to do the gambling on NBA with the amounts i play over there!!! Most casinos will look at you funny if you want to bet over a dime.. And i buy back a huge bunch of my plays at the half which would be incredibly hard to do at the half in las vegas with those idiot book managers scoping your plays!!

I am hoping that the books will have seen a rise in action with pinnacle folding its US operations. I am also hoping that a great many street bookies will start laying some of their action off in las vegas!!!

I am definately getting out offshores!!! And i would advise any one with brains to do the same. Your bank will probably be getting a warning letter from uncle sam reminding them of the newly passed bill and your account will probably be frozen if they investigate and find gambling related activities. (And dont kid yourself about this, the banks are going to clamp down really hard on this. They have so many external interests that do not want to see a single bank even mentioned in any kind of investigation let alone a few gambling addicts)

I dont care what the sports forums (incidentally all of which are bankrolled by the same offshores that are in panic mode) are saying..

I am getting out!!! out!!! and I mean O-W-T.......OUT!!!!!

Ps..(For my half time wagers i think i will go with bodog.) Dont take that as an endorsement. Bodog is probably the next big book going down. Why you ask am i moving to a book i know is going down or being targeted by the feds..Well its simple as this. The owner of Bodog is a well known playboy who has appeared in several US mags thumbing his nose at the feds. I figure that
if bodog is busted, i have a better chance of actually seeing my balance returned to me because this book as a face and he aint a simple fall guy like Betonsports had. Should shit go down, this guy cant up and dissappear to israel or brazil with our money!!!

Otherwise every other book can go to hell!!!:hung

Re: What are my risks?

What exactly will the bank do? Do they send you a letter? Do they just reject the transaction?

Not to doubt any of you, but how do you know all this? I have been trying to read up on this online, but I have a hard time sifting through all of the crap on the internet.

Like I said before, I really have learned a lot from the posters on this site.

I dont know exactly what the bank will do. They may freeze your account (i have read an account of one guy who had his account frozen.)

Have no doubts about this. Our banks are run by your typical classic geek who will only break laws where fines are the only repercussion. Once they know jail time is possible. (especially after that enron bullshit) they will not waste any time culling out the gamblers as required by investors. Especially being that the banks dont really profit that much off transactions made by gamblers. They dont have any sensible interest in promoting or defending your right to transfer money to offshores. They have absolutely nothing to benefit and everything to lose..

This is how you must look at the situation. (They will do something about the account. Wether closing it and returning your money or restricting your transactions, they will do something about this.

Re: What are my risks?

early last fall, one night i was playing poker at paradise poker and horses at brisbet, using my debit card, i made about 3 deposits to paradise poker and about 5 deposits to brisbet. the next morning, i got a computer generated call saying my account was suspended for possible fraud. it rattled all of my purchases for the day (like gas, groceries, etc) but when it rattled off the brisbet and paradise poker ones, it refered to them as gambling transactions. all i had to do was press 1 and my pin to authorize the payments and reinstate my account. since nov., once i tried to use my debit card, at eogpoker and it was declined (it still works at brisbet). i was just wondering, does citadel come up as a gambling transaction ?

Re: What are my risks?

I am in such a foul mood right now!!!! I cant fucking believe what is happening to me right now!!!

Sunday night i decided to withdraw all my money from offshores and i started monday.

Now guess what!!! the last out i had has been closed...NO more friggin online check transfers from my account. the only options i have are ugly ass inconvenient options that will leave me exposed in ways i dont wanna be exposed. ( i wont elaborate further on this.)

I have exactly 70% of my br in offshores and i am sitting on 30%. I am seriously contemplating buying a ticket to vegas tomorrow and trying to place some reverse bets!!! ( Much as i would like to take my entire balance out of this one book that has pissed me off so much, i think i would have to forego the sweet test of revenge and just get my money out at a loss of mere juice!!!!)

Whats worse yet, playing bothsides of a wager could turn out disatrously for me. i could wind up with 100% of the br right back in offshores if i am on the wrong side in las vegas!!!!

And to make matters worse, i am on a phenomenal run in NBA right now and i am killing my books bad!!!!

WHAT A FVCKING WAY TO GO OUT!!! SOMETHING LIKE THIS SHIT HAS HAPPENED TO ME EVERY YEAR I AM KILLING AT NBA..IF ITS NOT BOS FVCKING WITH MY MONEY ITS THIS SHIT!!!:+paranoid :+paranoid :+paranoid

As of a few hours ago Citadel has ceased moving US customers' money to offshore gaming sites. You can chat with them live about it right now to confirm.
