(MCT) MINNEAPOLIS—Poker is red-hot on college campuses these days. A small number of students have made it a full-time job, turning what is a game for most into a profession where tens of thousands of dollars can come and go in a single night.

Today’s students are among the first to grow up with gambling so accessible. Credit is easily available. Casinos, once relegated to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, N.J., are now scattered across 37 states. Poker is a regular feature on cable TV.

Going to the casino has become a rite of passage for students turning 18. Freshmen play poker in residence halls, fraternities and bars host tournaments, and students hold sports betting pools and use wireless Internet connections to play anytime, anywhere.

The Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania found that card playing and Internet gambling has especially increased among college-age males during the past five years. About 16 percent played cards weekly in 2006, up from nearly 13 percent in 2005, and nearly 6 percent gambled online weekly, up from 2.3 percent in 2005.

I for one am shocked that the new legislation has not cut down the number of college kids gambling. Maybe we need a few more laws.

Gambling is promoted by our society everywhere. Yet, we are told by our dads in Congress not to gamble. They gamble. Their families gamble. There is lottery everywhere. There are horse tracks close by. There are riverboats galore. There are bingo games every day. There are euchre games in bars every week. I am just confused I reckon. :D . Hypocritical (insert any adj you like here).

The thing that I never understood is that to me the stock market just seems like glorified gambling. All these brokers and financial analysts are handicapping companies. There is more corruption in some of these companies then the gambling community. Why is it okay to put $100 on the stock of a major oil company but we can't put $100 on the Nets to cover 6.5 points against the Clippers (which they covered last night). And these guys handicapping these cpmpanies are considered "professionals" and are highly thought of. never understood the difference.... Other then the fact that they have to pay taxes on their profits, so the government likes them.

I don't know if anyone else shared the same experience, but...

College kids are gonna gamble. There's no stopping it. But if they post-up, they can stay out of serious trouble. Without the internet, kids will be using credit locals around campus like I did, and that usually ends badly for an inexperienced student who thinks chasing is OK because "he's due."

we were never told by congress not to gamble, we were told not to gamble at places that doesn't dump tons of money into their campaign "war chests".

anytime you take a calculated risk to increase your net worth your gambling in my opinion, like owning a business, buying real estate and investing in stocks I am thankfully I live in Canada.Hopefully our government wont follow your lead.Having said that I do know of someone who gave his son a credit card to go to college in the USAand he racked up a huge bill 5 figures and didnt even attend classes trying to make a living playing poker HE was choked to say the least

Re: INTERNET GAMBLING STILL ON THE RISE AMONGST COLLEGE KIDS

On a side note He also complained to the credit card company for allowing his son to make charges to a gambling site,so I have to wonder how many parents are out there in the same boat thus a crackdown on internet betting remember poker was first then the books. regardless there will always be a certain amount of people that have a problem with gambling no matter how they get that action

Re: INTERNET GAMBLING STILL ON THE RISE AMONGST COLLEGE KIDS

The crime there is that the parents gave the kid a credit card in the first place. Gambling has nothing to do with it...that kid was going to exploit that card no matter what.

College kids blowing money? You don't say!

If they aren't spending it on gambling, they are spending it on booze or drugs. They are kids, give them freedom and a good % of them are going to get into financial trouble.

That doesn't mean we need more governmental control, it means we need more parental control. But parents always want to blame someone else for their lack of attention to what their kid is doing.

If you give your kid a credit card to go to college and don't keep updated on what he is using it on, you are not being a responsible parent.

Now there is the case of those kids that are getting "free" credit cards shoved in their face in college -- so why aren't we attacking the problem of these immoral credit card companies? Instead we cut off gambling -- brilliant.

If a kid is abusing prescription drugs, we try to educate the kid and go after the source of where he got the prescription drugs -- we don't outlaw prescription drugs.

If a kid is abusing alcohol, we try to educate the kid and go after the source of the alcohol (bartenders overserving among other things) -- we don't outlaw alcohol.

But for some reason credit cards are treated differently... Wonder why that is...

Well said SOS. I can remember back when I was an undergrad credit card company reps used to set up tents almost every day for the first few weeks of each new semester. They would give away shirts, hats, chances to win airline tickets, ect... all to get kids to sign up for their particular visa, mastercard, or discover card.

By the time I finished my first two years in school I had about 7 credit cards. Luckily I didn't get myself into too much trouble ,but I did have about $3000 in CC debt when I graduated to go along with my $15,000 in student loans.

I think kids should be taught in high school about credit and finance. I was never taught anything about how this works by my parents or teachers. Because of this I definately made some bad financial decisions regarding loans, and credit early on. Luckily I still have a good credit rating and didn't get myself into too much trouble.

The american reveloution was partially funded by lottories. Some people do gamble with certain financial vehicles{stocks, options, futures, and bonds. However the funds placed in these vehicles do have a fundemental economic purposes other than the pursuit of action.

You aint kidding pvc. I remember back when I was in college and was with a local. I hit him hard the first week and thought I was a handicapping genious. The next week I lost it all back and then some, but I had already spent alot of what I had won. It got a little ugly, but I learned a lesson.

There is much less "chasing" online, one of the reasons I love it.

Replying to the heading.

College kids now / including myself gambled prior to the Internet. Pickup the phone and made a bet. These are just excuses from the Government to continue with the BS Laws.
