Why aren't we fighting back- Lets get orgainized and fight back!!!

Some of you may know me. I post most of the time at the RX but I read almost daily over here. I have posted something similair at the RX this morning.

I have seen poker players come together and they have fought back and are picking up steam and within a year I think poker will be legal.

We as gamblers need to do the same. We are doing nothing.There are enough smart people in these forums to at least put a plan in place to be heard. We need leadership, somoene to tell us what to do. Someone to go on TV when stories like Netller and Pinnacle pop up, to tell our sides of the story. We (the forum world) need to get orgainized and put together a plan and fight back.

The world is on our side. The U.S. will subside when pressure is put on them in this regard. Poker will prove that. These lawmakers just need to be educated on how the world thinks.

We have 2 choices: 1) sit and cry about it and everyday wake up lose a little more.This approach isn't working or 2) actually do something about it, fight back, get orgainized and at least attempt to be heard.

Evryone needs to quit being so scared. No one is going to come knocking on your door and arrest you, hell nothing is happening right now and people are freaking out.

We are THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This is how are ancestors did it, they fought back for what they beleieved in and that is why we have our freedoms today.

I can't beleieve that we are just all sitting here. Come on. This forum has alot of strong willed people who I have admired reading thru the years. Successfull people who could be a positive influence on the fight to make this legal. Hell if you can gamble legally in Iraq than it shouldn't be too difficult to convince the right people to make this happen here.

The world is watching. Books want us to win but we are not even fighting. We are all just laying down like a bunch of little pansies and getting pushed around. Lets at least fight back and do something, anything.

Yeah well that is the problem. Nobody is fighting back. No one is taking us serious because we are not taking ourselves serious.

I am sick and fucking tired of waking up everyday and turning on my computer and being scared of what is next.

Maybe if we actually got orgainized and fought back books would fight back too. I read today on here about the WTO trying to fight back maybe if we got behind them some way then maybe me can make a difference for them and vice versa.

Everyone needs to stop gambling for a minute and start fighting back!!!

This is 100% my point. Thoghts and ideas like this are the only way things are going to change. The goverment threw their best punch. Now we fight back.

We ALL need to ask ourselves what we need to do. Gamblers are the most passionate people I know. It takes some sort of orgainzation of a few key contacts and then away we go.

I am telling you if we started fighting back as a GROUP then others will follow but until then places like Mansion are just going to fold up tent and go home. We should have a guy like that on our side. I am sure he don't want to leave but is scared to fight alone.

let me sign ssomething. Give this guy/group something to go to battle with. Let me show them my support. The more people behind this movement the better. The more people behind this movement the more serious everyone takes us.

Look at poker, they did it the right way, they changed the whole culture of how people think.

Right on. Everyone needs to quit worrying about this and that (same here Roach not coming down on you at all). We are not doing anything wrong. We need to get that word out for others to hear.

We need leadership. All those dufuses like Negreanu and Raymer who would probaly be nothing without poker are not going to help us. They are at least making progress are being taken serious.

Thats my point. Hey if we fail than we fail but not doing anything is a joke. There has to be a better approach to what we are doing than the one we have used up until now. The way this bill was slipped in should have people up in arms.

That is all we should want is to be heard and then go from there.

to life, liberty and the pursuit of doing what I want with my recreation dollar.

I was real disappointed when the poker people seperated itself from the sports players. You would think they would see the benefit of greater numbers for the cause. Handicapping sports is at least as great a skill as poker --- more so in my view. Anyway you look at it, it's a wager.

Whoever this "power person" is, I'll gladly cast my vote to support the cause.
Their are probably more players in the closet than we realize who would follow as / if requested. Just how? And support who?

this is what I mean, people want to do something, anything but don't know what to do. I am what I consider a forum junkie.It is where I go the first thing in the morining and the last thing I do before I go to bed. I am on these all day long. I average 10 posts a day the Rx and another 3 or so at Fezziks place and have no idea how to do to get involved to feel like I am making a difference. I can't find 1 thread anywhere telling me what to do on what should be the most important issue at hand.

What we do is every bit as skillfull as what a guy playing the stcok market does and needs to be told to everyone that will listen. All winning gamblers I know are extremly passionate in beating this difficult game and could really put some effort into being heard.

How much more crap are we going to take before enough is enough?

Why should we, the gamblers, fight back against the government, when the sportsbooks and payment processors will not do the same? This UIGEA changed nothing; internet gambling was illegal in the US before and after its passage. All the sportsbooks and payment processors have VOLUNTARILY stopped doing business with US customers ostensibly so that they can freely live and travel in the USA. That makes no sense, and it definitely is not a cause worth fighting for.

If the remnants of this industry do not come together and establish a viable payment processor system that is easy to use by US customers and is not able to be stopped by the US govt, then this industry, as we know it, will not survive! Sure, a small portion will survive to service the rest of the world, but it will not be anything like the industry that we have seen over the past 5 years.

i agree with everything in this post, but the poker side of it is a little different. 1st of all, the number of people who make their living playing poker is far higher than the people that do sports betting. a sports betting alliance will not generate as many people as that for poker. the PPA has people that are seen on TV daily leading the way. everyone knows them. how many professional sports gamblers are known throughout the country just by looking at their face. one of the PPA's major arguments about legalizing poker is that they seperate it from sports, saying it is a game of skill and sports betting is not. but in reality, the PPA has done absolutely nothing to sway the minds of the government in making it legal IMO. a sports betting alliance will be much less people, but can be heard alot louder than the PPA taking the right approach about it.

I hear ya Devil, and I can't speak for anyone else...but personally, I'd rather just deal with a couple locals than sign a bunch of petitions where I'll be getting a bunch of sportsbook advertisments in the mail daily, my inbox filled with more, and constant cold calls from books or touts.

People in this thread have good intentions, but there are just as many opportunistic scum bags who'll set up a fake petition to gather a bunch of gambler's personal information and use it for spam/cold calls. I'd rather keep my info to myself and deal with locals rather than give the impression to anyone who sees my mail or answers my phone to think i'm some out of control degenerate getting 100 pieces of gambling mail constantly.

In my opinion the problem lies in the liability and unwanted exposure one opens themselves up to.

I can't speak for Ken or any of the other site owners, but with as many crackdowns, new laws, and greying of the already established laws occuring if *I* were a site owner *I* certainly wouldn't want to be the guy spearheading any kind of resistance when the law seems to be going more and more against them.

Site operators are doing what they've always done -- staying low as much as possible. While it sounds great to say "you site operators need to spearhead the resistance", none of these guys is going to go head to head with the U.S. government and not only lose their livelihood but possibly their *freedom* in doing so.

Any resistance has to start from those that are somewhat shielded from any prosecution. I'm not saying that site owners and operators are in danger of prosecution, but I doubt any of them want to ruffle the feathers of the U.S. government right now with all of the blatantly ridiculous interpretations and abuses of people's rights.


It's not up to the banks -- they've got such established businesses that they aren't going to put their necks on the line.

It's not up to the payment processors -- they have very little pull in the industry.

It's not up to the site operators -- unless there's a few out there that are willing to throw caution to the wind and possibly face severe punishment.

It's up to the sportsbooks -- and from what we've seen so far, the big ones aren't willing to fight.

Sorry if I go against the grain on this, but no one wants to listen to us in Congress. We are up against the sports leagues and the universities, among the most powerful groups there are. They usually ask for little, but gambling is one issue they ask for help on. These are the same businesses that can extract hundreds of millions of dollars in bidding wars just for the right to host one team. What kind of money can we fight with?

I am not saying it hurts to talk to representatives, send letters out, talk it up with your friends and family. But expecting us to create a big lobby that wields power is a pipe dream. All the gambling establishment has gladly thrown us under the bus, we are the black sheep of the group. Few constituencies will speak out against poker, but everyone will step up against sports gambling. It is just the way it is.

I still believe the best thing is to go silent. Have some books close up, essentially tell Congress hey you win. There will still be plenty of business left and if it makes no noise, its possible this issue will be forgotten for some time. Look at when the problem started. It wasn't when the industry was booming in its own right, it was when all these yahoos went public and then spouted off about it. Yeah they took a minor shot at it that included the JC conviction, but it was under the radar until around the time BOS went public. Its a mess now, all the arrests are public companies. Before that the companies were mostly run by guys with fake names and the whole process was bulletproof. Then bankers put the idea in their heads to be above board, use real names, get real execs from other industries and raise millions. Where are those bankers now? Hiding.

Fighting back is pointless, its a battle that can't be won. Online gambling will be legalized soon. Poker will be first in line after horse racing. Sports betting will never get there, its the sacrificial lamb.

The sharpest minds on this are saying it, even Dr. Rose guessed 2 years until online versions of poker are legal in California.

Poker will be legalized because of the skill game argument, the fact that the house doesn't have to take a cut, and the fact that its just much more popular than betting on sports in a formal way. Add in the lack of real opposition its the surest thing outside of horse racing. Slots, VP, table games...those might take longer but I could see them eventually being legal. Sports faces the wrath of the leagues, anyone who doesn't pay attention to this is just kidding themselves. These leagues are impossible to just go around, they have money in all sorts of pockets and can bring up incredible resources. Say the Shrink goes to Congress to lobby for this. Faced up against him will be legendary coaches, former players, some guy who went bankrupt betting with a bookie...you name it. What chance does Shrink have of making a good impression when the Congressmen will be asking Don Shula for his autograph?

The cumulative bank rolls of everyone at this forum is maybe enough to get Congress to pay attention for about 15 seconds..

When BOA or the NRA or whatever lobbies congress they do it with 10s of millions.
