I stole money from a well known sportsbook many years ago and I still feel bad

Let me explain. I made a pretty good size wager on a college football game about 7 years ago from a well known book and luckily I won my wager. I was in the middle of a pretty bad streak at the time and was happy to get back on track but still nowhere close to even for the week. When I logged into my account I noticed that they had credited my winnings twice. I knew it was only a matter of time before they would notice so instead of telling them about it I decided to wait. After a few days went by, and the mistake had not been caught I decided to just not bet at this book for the time being. I think you know where this story is headed. A few more months go by and I decide to close my account and ask for a payout thinking for sure they would find the mistake. They didn't and I received and cashed my check. To this day I still don't feel right about what I did and I wonder what other people would have done in my situation. It still bothers me today.

I say if you gonna continue to bet why not bet with that book so if you do lose you won't feel bad about the loss.

Kinda had the same thing happen to me once for a small amount. I deposited $300.00 via on-line check and it never hit my bank. I didn't want to spend the money for fear that one day the check would clear. So after about a month i called the sportsbook to see if it was thier fault or the banks. The sportsbook said they would look into the matter and call me back. I recieved no return phone call, and the check never cleared!!! I turned that $300.00 into $900.00 and cashed out with no problems.

Harrington,

I'm surprised nobody called you out on the fallacy of your logic...

You stated, "I knew it was only a matter of time before they would notice so instead of telling them about it I decided to wait."

If I KNEW it was only a matter of time before getting caught for STEALING in a sense (or to put it gently, for NOT doing the RIGHT THING), I'd be on the phone in a matter of minutes...

I believe Reputation means so much when gambling and I wouldn't want to tarnish mine over one bet...

However, since so much time has passed, I am sure the sports book has no clue.

Personally, I believe "what goes around comes around" so I'd still tell them although I am SURE to be in the SILENT minority...

Thanks for sharing,

Ken

This reminds me of a time I sold something at the local "Isolditonebay" store for around $350 profit. The place ended up accidentally sending me 2 checks in the same amount. I figured their accounting would catch up to it so I called them in good faith telling them of their mistake and they had no clue they did it. They did give me a coupon for showing my honesty. I did clear my conscience and figured the $350 wasn't worth scamming them. So I guess it is kinda hard to put a dollar amount on what exactly keeps your conscience clear.

I had this happen to be at 2 sports books in the last month for a total of approx: $650. I called and reported both times. I thought maybe they were testing my honesty.

in all liklihood we all have at times not watched our accounts closely enough and have had winners graded as losers and not caught it

Good point Ken, I guess after getting killed for the week I was hoping deep down they wouldn't catch the mistake. I didn't start feeling bad until after I withdrew the money. But to call them now years after and tell them, that would really be hard to do. Nice to be posting here at EOG by the way.

If you accidently bet the game twice, they would not refund your money.

It is not your business to run their business.

I have also had countless times where wins have not been credited. I am sure I have not caught all and no book has ever come to me a month later and been like, we forgot to pay you for this one.
