Is it true that the 49ers-Chargers Super Bowl put quite a few out of business?

GREED is the NUMBER 1 OFFENDER not only bookmakers, but for gamblers as well...

Anyone who believes differently is clueless...

Greed and drugs, dont forget the drugs guys, thats kills everything and everyone. Devil knows what I am talking about, that 97 Marg office had the potential to be the best and the biggest, I am talking Pinny size, Greed and Drugs buried it. That office lost 2.2 million on 1 game that landed 1 in college Foots, Michst vs Purdue(I remember it like it was yesterday), it was one of the craziest endings you will ever see, a 500k decision became a 2.2 mil loss because the game opened +2 and closed -2, we lost every bet. That game hurt bad but didnt put a dent in those pockets, its what happened after that game that buried it.

I believe the best books are those that only take "medium" size bets. If they are only catering to the high roller--I think their days might be numbered. I mean WHY?

Many of these places can cover overhead on casino profits alone I hear.

Not only online casinos but I think online poker is/has been a huge cash cow. Risk-free money every few seconds with those rakes.

In the old days you just didn't have the propositions you have nowadays. You also didn't have the internet where everyone could look everything up.

Years ago you only could bet the game, at -110, and totals didn't come into play until the early 70's. I think that teasers arrived around the 80's. Books had a gold mine on MNF as they never seemed to lose when everyone was trying to play catch up on Mondays.

What does Box Card numbers mean? Does that mean he pays a little in overhead or a lot? How rare is it for a big book to have a losing month these days?

STUCKIN,

ALL BETS WERE AT LEAST -110..........MOST PROP BETS HAD 30-40 CENT SPREADS........TEASERS WERE 120-100 TIES LOSE AND PARLAYS WERE $60 TO WIN $140........WE GAVE NO BONUS, YOU PAID FOR THE CALL AND WE DIDN'T HAVE TO ADVERTISE TO GET CUSTOMERS........

I THINK HE MEANT BOX CAR NUMBERS........BOX CARS BEING 6-6 ON THE DICE , HIGHEST NUMBER YOU CAN ROLL.........SO HE MEANS HE PAYS ALOT IN OVERHEAD..........

IF THE BOOK IS SIMPLY A POST-UP BOOK........I DON'T THINK LOSING IS A RARE OCCURANCE AT ALL........

SHOE,

I REMEMBER THAT GAME WELL...........I ALSO THINK IF THOSE IDIOTS COULD HAVE STAYED CLEAN.......REMEMBER THIS WAS THE BIGGEST OFFICE EVER CREATED AT THE TIME.........WITH THE REAL ADVENT OF POST UP STILL YEARS AWAY AND WITH NATURAL GROWTH........IT WOULD HAVE DWARFED PINNICLE IN SIZE IN TODAYS MARKET (MY OPINION)........SHOOT WE HAD 60 CLERKS ANSWERING PHONES IN 96...........

I recall part of a gambling book I read once talked about when totals in sports were starting out (might have been one of John Scarney's books). As I remember reading, they considered betting on totals to be such a prop that they would make a line like "Under 197 -110, Over 199 -110". They would give themselves an edge so if it fell on that 198 number in the middle than both sides lost. It also made it more difficult for games to get middled by the players - hell with that line, the bookies got a chance at their own middle.

RELOAD, YES THERE WERE NUMBERS ON TOTALS LIKE THAT, BUT ONLY OUTLAW TYPE BOOKIES WOULD USE THEM.......

THERE WERE ALSO GUYS THAT WOULD NEVER PAY MORE THAN 2-1 ON A BASEBALL DOG.....LINE OPENED 200-240 AND CUSTOMERS BET THE FAVORITE....THE GAME WENT TO 200-260 WITH THOSE GUYS.......AND MORE FAVORITE MONEY 200-280 AND SO ON.....NEVER COULD TAKE MORE THAN +200 WITH THEM..........REMEMBER THERE WAS NO DON BEST TO COMPARE TO..............

They make it a big issue to get paid and be paid--how hard is it to put 3/$100 bills etc in an envelope. No--this is now corporate amerika.

Yes greed can bust anybody but VOLUME in the bookmaking business solves all problems!!! Especially when the action is two sided.

Re: IN THE OLDEN DAYS BOOKS VERY SELDOM LOST.

Devil,

How did the office get to be so big when the owners were so stupid? Was it a bunch of different sheets combined to make a monstor office? If so I bet the accounting was a nightmare. Seems like anyone able to get that big had to have a lot on the ball.

Thanks for the explanation of box car numbers. He then went on to say that the overhead was peanuts so I have no idea what he meant and never heard the expression before.

What was the biggest decision you ever saw on a game back in the day other than the 2 million dollar middle? Thanks for all the stories. I love the stories. I think the gambling dollar wasn't chopped up like it was back in the day like it is now. Sports bettin g is still popular but there is a lot of legal, sanctioned type gambling competing for the square buck which leaves a lot of sharp money looking for homes, hence all the books we've seen going broke over the last few years. Do you think this is true?

I REALLY DON'T RECALL THE LARGEST DECISION.......I DO REMEMBER SOME WISEGUY CALLING AND A CLERK YELLING SO-N-SO WANTS TO KNOW WHAY YOU WILL TAKE ON A FIRST QUARTER.......STEVE SAID ASK HIM WHAT HE WANTS...CLERK SAYS HE WILL TAKE WHATEVER YOU WANT UP TO 180K...STEVE SAID GIVE IT TO HIM AND THE CLERK SAID 180K?? STEVE SAID YEAH TAKE IT ALL......WE LOST THAT DECISION.........

THE OWNERS WERE FAR FROM STUPID........JUST STEVE K...........

YES MANY, MANY, MANY SHEETS.........

THERE ARE TOO MANY SHARP BETTORS AND NOT ENOUGH SQUARES......THE ONLY WAY YOU GET A PLAY FROM MOST OF THE SHARPS IS IF THEY GET TO A NUMBER FIRST OR IF YOU HAVE THE WORST NUMBER IN THE WORLD.....IN TODAYS MARKET, IF YOU WANT A PLAY, JUST HANG THE WORST NUMBER BY 1/2 POINT ON DON BEST AND YOU WILL HAVE 40 CALLS IN THE NEXT 10 SECONDS..........

BOX CAR NUMBERS, MEANING HE PAYS ALOT IN OVER HEAD, AND AT THE SAME TIME THE OVER HEAD IS PEANUTS EVERY WEEK TO PAY OUT, COMPARED TO WHAT HE WINS WEEKLY...
