Ahman Green Leaves Packers for Texans

Posted Mar 4th 2007 6:29PM by Michael David Smith

In a move that gives Houston coach Gary Kubiak a high-profile but aging piece to the offense he's trying to build, NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that Packers running back Ahman Green has signed a contract with the Texans.

Green can still be a productive back (he ran for 1,059 yards last season), but he just turned 30 and he's lost the burst of speed that made him a great player a few years ago. If the Texans think he'll be able to carry 350 times this season, they're in for a long year. More likely, Green will be part of a committee approach at running back.

There had been talk that the Texans were hoping to land Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson in next month's draft, but it always seemed like a long shot that Peterson would still be around when the Texans' turn to draft (eighth) came up, and that's probably why Houston felt it couldn't wait until the draft.

For Green Bay, Vernand Morency is at the top of the depth chart for now, but the Packers will likely add one of the many veteran free agents available. They could look for a running back in the draft as well, with Cal's Marshawn Lynch a possibility.

Pats show interest in dealing for Moss

By John Tomase

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="2"><spacer type="block" height="2" width="1"></td></tr></tbody></table> Monday, March 5, 2007 - Updated: 05:05 AM EST

On the surface, Randy Moss doesn?t seem like a Patriots [team stats] kind of player. He often plays at half-speed and has quit on more than one team.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
But Moss is supremely talented, and he?s got something else working in his favor - Bill Belichick apparently loves him.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
League sources last night indicated the Patriots coach has long been enamored with the Raiders wide receiver and would welcome the opportunity to bring him to Foxboro for the right price.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
Moss is on the block after two disappointing seasons in Oakland. The Raiders have worked on a deal that would send the mercurial wide receiver to Green Bay, with the Packers offering quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Raiders holding out for a first-round pick, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
The Packers don?t seem in much of a rush to pull the trigger, however, which has left an opening for the Pats. A source said Belichick believes he could motivate Moss to play and that he?d have the locker room support system to back him up, thanks to high-character veterans like Tom Brady
[stats], Richard Seymour [stats] and Rodney Harrison [stats], among others.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
For proof, look no further than Corey Dillon
[stats], who arrived in New England with a rap sheet far longer and more serious than Moss? and yet proved to be a good soldier for virtually his entire tenure with the team.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
Moss has traditionally responded better and played harder when surrounded by players he respects, like Cris Carter and Daunte Culpepper in Minnesota.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
Word out of Oakland is the 30-year-old wants to play on a contender before his career ends. The Raiders are intent on moving him following a miserable 2006 that saw him post career-worst numbers in receptions (42), yards (553), and touchdowns (three).
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
?Moss quit on us last year,? a Raiders employee told the Journal Sentinel. ?My feeling is he wants to go someplace where they can win. He knows he only has X number of years left and he?s never, ever won at any level.?
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
Moss clearly represents a gamble. He loafed through much of his tenure in Oakland and experienced his share of disciplinary issues, from possession of marijuana to pretending to moon the crowd at Lambeau Field. His most serious scrape came in 2002 when he tried to make an illegal turn and grazed a traffic cop with his car. He spent a night in jail and was ultimately charged with careless driving.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
As twisted as this sounds, those transgressions are relatively minor in an NFL that includes Titans troublemaker Pacman Jones and the majority of the Cincinnati Bengals roster. The Patriots believe they can keep Moss in line, if given the chance.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
One issue would be convincing Moss to restructure a contract that calls for $9.75 million in 2007 and $11.25 million in 2008. The Pats also need to strike a deal with what is considered a rudderless ship in Oakland, thanks to owner Al Davis and a depleted front office.
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td height="8"><spacer type="block" height="8" width="8"></td></tr></tbody></table>
That?s a lot to overcome, but at the very least, color the Patriots intrigued.

[FONT=Verdana,Arial, Helvetica] The Dolphins signed Green Bay tight end David Martin to take McMichael's place in the starting lineup. Martin played in 11 games for the Packers in 2006 with four starts, catching 21 passes for 198 yards with two touchdowns.

"David is a talented tight end who will be a major contributor to our offense," Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said in a team-released statement. "He is very athletic with good speed and is a quality receiver, having played wideout in college [at Tennessee]. We feel as though he will be a valuable addition to our team."

McMichael is the Dolphins' all-time leader in catches (283) and receiving yards (3,096) for a tight end. A 2002 fourth-round draft choice, McMichael is coming off his third consecutive season with at least 60 catches.

Welker, was tendered a one-year, $1.3 million contract as a restricted free agent last Friday that would force any team that signed him to an offer sheet to surrender a second-round draft choice if the Dolphins declined to match. The Patriots instead opted to trade for Welker, who led the Dolphins with a career-high 67 catches last season.

The Dolphins cut Harrington after being unable to trade him. Harrington was 5-6 as a starter for the Dolphins in 2006 but was benched late in the season in favor of Cleo Lemon, who is a restricted free agent.

The Dolphins avoided paying Harrington a $1 million roster bonus by releasing him.

"Regarding Randy, Wes and Joey, it is always hard to part ways with individuals who have helped you win in the past," Cameron said. "But it's part of the business, and it's the most difficult aspect of this job."

Broncos sign Ramsey to back up Cutler

By BILL WILLIAMSON

THE DENVER POST

DENVER -- The Denver Broncos finally got a veteran backup quarterback and Patrick Ramsey got a chance for stability.
Addressing one of their final pressing free agency needs, the Broncos found a backup to Jay Cutler by agreeing to a two-year contract with Ramsey on Wednesday, according to his agent, Jimmy Sexton. Ramsey is expected to make $4 million to $5 million for the life of the contract.

"Patrick thinks it's the right place for him," Sexton said.
Ramsey, 28, was cut by the New York Jets earlier this week. He was a first-round pick of Washington in 2002 and started 24 games for the Redskins. He threw one pass for the Jets last season.
Ramsey has 34 career touchdown passes, has thrown 29 interceptions and has a career passer rating of 74.9.
Houston and Carolina also were chasing Ramsey.

Denver has been looking for three years for a veteran backup. It had interest in Jeff Garcia, but he was looking for a chance to start and signed with Tampa Bay.

GIANTS ACQUIRE RB DROUGHNS FOR BUST CARTER

March 10, 2007 -- The Giants went one week into free agency without a signing - or anything close - but yesterday went the old-fashioned trade route to land the running back they expect will back up new starter Brandon Jacobs.

In a one-for-one swap, the Giants acquired Reuben Droughns from the Browns in exchange for underachieving receiver Tim Carter, a 2002 second-round draft pick who never developed into much of a target.
This is the first major transaction for first-year GM Jerry Reese and is contingent on both players passing physicals with their new teams.
Droughns turns 29 on Aug. 21 and became expendable in Cleveland after the Browns on Wednesday signed Jamal Lewis. In back-to-back seasons, Droughns gained 1,240 yards for the Broncos in 2004 and 1,232 yards for the Browns in 2005. Last season, he gained 758 yards for the Browns.
At 5-foot-11 and 220 pounds, he's a power back and not the change-of-pace runner the Giants wanted to utilize along with bruising Jacobs.

"The two teams in the Super Bowl this year had a two-back system, so we're going to complement each other very well," Droughns said on Sirius NFL Radio.
Carter, 27, in 53 games for the Giants caught 72 passes for 967 yards and three touchdowns. A speedster, he never materialized as a deep threat, battling injuries and inconsistency. Last season, he played in all 16 games and stated eight of them after Amani Toomer went down with a knee injury. Carter managed 22 receptions.

The Giants now need a legitimate No. 3 receiver. Sinorice Moss endured an injury-filled rookie year, and there's no one else on the roster the team can count on for that role. Former Rams wideout Kevin Curtis has visited, but at the moment wants to be paid like a starter.
Droughns has three years remaining on his contract, and his salary of $1.25 million in 2007 is far less expensive than Dominic Rhodes would have cost. The Giants brought in Rhodes for a visit but the former Colts runner was priced too high for the Giants. Rhodes yesterday signed a two-year, $7.5 million deal with the Raiders.
"I realize the perception is that we haven't done anything through the first week of free agency because we haven't signed any unrestricted free agents," Reese said.

"The opposite is true. We have been working very hard to do what's best for this franchise. The fact is, we had a few guys we had targeted that would have made sense for us under the right circumstances. A couple of those simply didn't work out, but there is a whole lot of the free-agency period left and the draft and the rest of the offseason for us to continue to build this roster, and we're going to work smartly in doing that."
This is the first straight-up trade of veteran players by the Giants since July 12, 1984, when they sent linebacker Brad Van Pelt to the Vikings for running back Tony Galbreath.

Patriots Land Donte' Stallworth to Six Year Deal

Posted Mar 11th 2007 10:44AM by Enrico Campitelli Jr.
Filed under: Eagles, Patriots, NFL Free Agency
The New England Patriots have had a tremendous free agency. They capped it off with signing former Eagles speedster Donte' Stallworth to a deal with roughly $12 million in guarantees. It was believed that most teams, including the Eagles, wanted to give Stallworth a one year contract to prove he could stay healthy. The Patriots took a chance and gave Donte' a multiple year deal.
Stallworth will sign a six-year contract. The deal is believed to be worth a little more that $30 million with close to $12 million guaranteed, the source told Smith.
The Philadelphia Eagles front office have said in the past that they try to model their moves and cap structure around that of the New England Patriots. The Patriots broke the mold of being frugal in the off-season by signing two of the biggest names on the market on both sides of the ball. I find it a bit ironic that the Eagles biggest acquisition at wideout was signing former Patriot Bethel Johnson while the Patriots went out and put up the big money for Stallworth. One of the Birds other biggest needs, linebacker, was also addressed by the Patriots while the Eagles went off and signed some special teamer you've never heard of.

With all of the drama surrounding Tom Brady as of late, he will certainly be happy to have Donte' Stallworth to connect with next season. The Patriots will be dangerous in 2007.

WR Washington to exit Bengals

Agrees to five-year deal with Patriots

BY MARK CURNUTTE | [The Bengals lost two more players in free agency the past couple of days, and they are on the verge of seeing another one go.
But, as Day 11 of veteran free agency came to a close Monday, the Bengals still were in the running to retain two key backups.
On Monday, wide receiver Kelley Washington, a Bengals unrestricted free agent, agreed to terms on a five-year contract with the New England Patriots. The deal is essentially for one year and has a $4 million option bonus in 2008. Washington will receive a $300,000 signing bonus.
[

Washington's deal came a day after the Sacramento Bee reported the Oakland Raiders had finalized a two-year contract with former Bengals tight end Tony Stewart. The Cleveland Browns last week signed Bengals restricted free agent Shaun Smith to an offer sheet, and a decision by the Bengals on whether to match it is expected to be announced this week.
The Browns, who signed former Bengals offensive lineman Eric Steinbach on Day 1 of free agency, entertained unrestricted free agent safety Kevin Kaesviharn for a visit last Tuesday.

Kaesviharn also has had confirmed visits to Arizona and New Orleans but remains unsigned, and the Bengals would like to bring him back as part of their safety rotation with starters Madieu Williams and Dexter Jackson.
The Browns would not appear to be the best fit for Kaesviharn. They have starting safeties in Sean Jones and Brodney Pool and a top backup in second-year player Ben Emanuel.
Agent Bruce Tollner did not return a phone message Monday seeking comment about Kaesviharn.
In addition to Kaesviharn, the Bengals would like to re-sign backup quarterback Anthony Wright, who has visited Denver. But the Broncos signed Patrick Ramsey to back up starter Jay Cutler.

"I talked to them this week," Joel Segal, Wright's agent, said of the Bengals. "We're going to talk later this week. There has been dialogue."
Washington, 27, was the Bengals' third-round draft pick in 2003 from Tennessee. He played in 44 games with the Bengals, making six starts, and eight of his 72 receptions went for touchdowns. He was limited to five games in 2006 because of a hamstring injury.

With the Patriots, Washington will compete for the No. 3 receiver job behind projected starters Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker.
Washington and Stewart are the third and fourth unrestricted free agents to sign with other teams, joining Steinbach and linebacker Marcus Wilkins, who got a three-year, $3 million deal with Atlanta.

The Arizona Republic reports that Seahawks free agent tight end Jerramy Stevens was arrested this morning in Scottsdale for investigation of driving under the influence and possessing marijuana. Police said he admitted drinking four or five margaritas at a bar, the Salty Senorita. The 27-year-old Bellevue resident was pulled over for driving erratically in a rented car. He refused a breath test and officers obtained a search warrant to take a blood sample. Stevens is an unrestricted free agent after playing five season for the Seahawks who had made him a first round draft pick. He has visited the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this off-season. Stevens has a record that includes an arrest in Medina in 2003 with two open champagne bottles in his car.

He pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was sentenced to two days in jail. He also was convicted of hit-and-run driving while a University of Washington student for driving into a building. Seattle picked up another veteran tight end Tuesday with the signing of Marcus Pollard.

Dolphins Trying to Acquire David Carr?

Dolphins Trying to Acquire David Carr?

Trade talks begin with Texans about acquiring QB Carr

BY ARMANDO SALGUERO
The Dolphins are Carr shopping. The club's brain trust spent part of Thursday speaking with the Houston Texans about quarterback David Carr and investigating all aspects of a possible trade for the former first overall pick in the 2002 draft.
Carr ending up in Miami is not a certainty. But it is a possibility that speaks to Miami's uncertain quarterback situation.

The team's interest in Carr, and even in Kansas City quarterback Trent Green, coupled with coach Cam Cameron's cautious words when he last spoke about Daunte Culpepper, indicate that Culpepper is not assured of being the team's starter in 2007.
Culpepper, despite being 17 months and two surgeries removed from an October 2005 injury to his right knee, might still not be completely healthy.

The Dolphins don't really have a certainty Culpepper will reach that complete health and don't have a guarantee the player will pick up Cameron's new system if he does get healthy.
That irresolute scenario sparked the interest in Green, 36, as an insurance policy.
But the possibility that Carr, 27, would make the Dolphins better for years to come makes the interest in him more logical.
Carr is a career 60 percent passer, a statistic buoyed by his 68 percent completion rate in 2006. His best season came in 2004, when he passed for 3,531 yards, with 16 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and an 83.5 quarterback rating. Dolphins defensive coordinator Dom Capers was the Texans' coach that year.

Capers' opinion of Carr will play a role in the Dolphins' aggressiveness in pursuing the trade. The Dolphins might also hope Carr is released and try to sign him as a free agent.
Carr's full potential as a franchise quarterback never materialized for the Texans, and that is why he is being shopped following the team's acquisition of Matt Schaub from Atlanta.
''We're working with his representatives and David to find a place for him to continue his NFL career,'' Texans general manager Rick Smith said. ``Matt is our starting quarterback. We're trying to help David find another place. We're trying to trade him [Thursday], maybe the next couple of days.''
Carr's agent, Michael Sullivan, did not return a phone message. Carr would have to rework his contract that has two years remaining for a trade to work.

Cameron was unavailable for comment. He will conduct a news conference today but likely will decline commenting about Carr as long as the player remains the property of another team.
The Texans are not going to extract a great price for Carr, but definitely want something such as a mid-round draft pick. One NFL personnel official with interest in the situation said the Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings also had shown interest in Carr.
But if the Dolphins really want Carr, they can have him, the personnel official said, by exchanging first-round picks with the Texans. The Texans have the No. 10 pick. The Dolphins are scheduled to pick at No. 9.

? The Dolphins signed San Diego free agent receiver and punt returner Az-Zahir Hakim and Arizona free agent guard Chris Liwienski to one-year contracts Thursday. The Dolphins also re-signed long snapper John Denny to a one-year contract.

Frank Gore Re-ups for 4 more Years

Frank Gore Re-ups for 4 more Years

RB Gore: 4 more years

Kevin Lynch, Chronicle Staff Writer
Wednesday, March 28, 2007

After nearly $40 million flew out the 49ers' door for unrestricted free agents, the team took care of its own Tuesday.
According to a league source, San Francisco agreed to a four-year contract extension with Frank Gore, who set a team record last year with 1,695 rushing yards.

Gore, who had a year left on his original three-year contract, will receive a $6.5 million signing bonus and make nearly $14 million in guaranteed money over the life of the extension.
Neither Gore nor his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, could be reached for comment.

Gore's devotion to the game borders on obsessive. That obsession was appreciated by the offensive linemen, who seem to love blocking for him.
He is the only 49er to lead the conference in rushing.
He has overcome myriad obstacles, including severe dyslexia and constant worry over his mother, Liz, who has been waiting for a kidney transplant since Gore was in high school in south Florida.
Gore also tore the anterior cruciate in each knee during his college career at Miami and needed surgery on each shoulder before last season. The health issues made the 49ers wonder if the body of the 5-foot-9, 215-pounder was much older than its 23 years.
The team must have been persuaded by Gore's ability to play in all 16 games last season, a feat perhaps greater than Alex Smith being the only 49ers quarterback to take every snap.

Running backs get hit on nearly every play and often more than once. That's particularly true of Gore, who's a punishing runner.
Even before agreeing to the deal, Gore said he wanted to rush for more than 2,000 yards in 2007.
With the expected signing of Gore, along with the signings of free agents Nate Clements, Michael Lewis, Aubrayo Franklin, Ashley Lelie and Tully Banta-Cain, the 49ers still should have more than $11 million in salary-cap cash.

<table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="305"> <tbody><tr> <td> </td> <td rowspan="3" width="10"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <center> <script language="JavaScript"> OAS_AD('300x250_1'); </script> </center> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> </tr> </tbody></table> "(Corey) is one of those guys that's saved his money, invested it extremely well and would not have to play any more for financial reasons,'' agent Steven Feldman said. "But he's also a guy who still loves the game of football.
"If it is the right situation he would play, and the Titans would appear to be the right situation. It's a great organization with a great coach. They have an exciting quarterback and a real need at running back. So it might make a lot of sense.''
Dillon, 32, a 10-year veteran, played the past three seasons with the New England Patriots after playing his first seven NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. Dillon led the Patriots with 812 rushing yards in 2006, and he scored 13 touchdowns.
In his career, Dillon has 11,241 rushing yards and 82 TDs.
Feldman said Dillon is in good shape and ready to play, but he's not interested in playing just anywhere. Dillon canceled a trip to Buffalo last month because he didn't want to make the trip. Feldman isn't sure either side will act fast. Dillon is to arrive in town on Tuesday night and meet with team officials on Wednesday.
"I think Tuesday and Wednesday is a 'hello and get to know you' type thing,'' Feldman said. "We'll see what happens."
The Titans are in need of a running back after losing Travis Henry to the Broncos last month in free agency. Second-year running back LenDale White will be back, but he's unproven and the team is interested in signing at least one other back.
Chris Brown, a Titan the past four seasons, remains an option. The team is also very interested in Chargers running back Michael Turner, a restricted free agent.
Dillon is a bruising back who the Titans know well, having faced him 12 times. In his first year with the Bengals in 1997, Dillon racked up 246 yards against the Tennessee Oilers, an NFL rookie record at the time.

Dolphins deal Mare to Saints

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Dolphins traded kicker Olindo Mare to the New Orleans Saints for a sixth-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft on Tuesday.
Mare was 26-of-36 on field goals last season and converted all 22 extra-point attempts. He spent the last 10 seasons with the Dolphins, amassing 1,048 points while converting 245 of 303 field goals.
His departure was expected, though, after the Dolphins acquired former Giants kicker Jay Feely this offseason.

"Adding another draft pick is another chip that hopefully we can turn into a player for the Dolphins down the road," Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller said. "Our goal has been to have some chips to play and maybe have some versatility to be able to go up or down. We need to have some picks. We need to build this team a nucleus of young talent that has kind of been void for the last few years. This is a good draft to do that in.
"The trade also benefits Olindo because he is able to go someplace, kick indoors and extend his career, so we wish him the best. It will be a good move for him."

Pretty good getting an extra pick for someone we were gonna cut anyways

Panthers come to terms with QB David Carr

A month after he was released by the Houston Texans, David Carr agreed Friday to a two-year deal to play for the Carolina Panthers.
Carr, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, will serve as Jake Delhomme's backup.

"It's a case where we were obviously looking for someone to come in back up Jake and the opportunity to get a quarterback the caliber of David in free agency is unique,'' Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "We thought it was a good situation and a good opportunity for us.''
Carr was a five-year starter for the expansion Texans. He completed 60 percent of his passes, but threw 65 interceptions and was sacked 249 times. Carr completed a career-high 68.3 percent of his passes last season, but was released by the Texans after they obtained Matt Schaub in a trade from Atlanta and anointed him as their starting quarterback.

The Panthers believe Carr's troubles stemmed from Houston's poor offensive line, and tried to sign him during his visit with the team early in the week. Carr left without a contract and visited Seattle, while Carolina brought in former Miami quarterback Joey Harrington for a visit.
But on Thursday Carr decided he wanted to sign with Carolina, and the two sides reached a deal over the phone early Friday morning, ending a nervous period for Hurney.
"He met everybody and met Jake and I think he felt comfortable,'' Hurney said. "You never know what happens when he leaves without a contract. But we felt good about him I think he felt good about us and he made the decision to come here.''

The Panthers were looking for an experienced quarterback to back up Delhomme after releasing Chris Weinke last month. Weinke struggled in a relief role in three games last season when Delhomme had a sprained thumb, throwing two touchdown passes and four interceptions. The Panthers went 1-2 in those three games and the lone game they won came with Weinke throwing only seven passes.
The 6-foot-3 Carr may have had other opportunities to start with other teams, but Hurney insisted Carr will back up Delhomme, who struggled last season as the Panthers finished disappointing 8-8.

"We made it clear and he knows that Jake Delhomme is our starting quarterback,'' Hurney said. "I think it was important for him to come to a winning organization and a place where he thinks has a chance to win. He knows that Jake is our starter. Every player wants to play, but he knows the role he's coming into.''

The move means the Panthers now have the top two picks from the 2002 draft. Carolina selected defensive end Julius Peppers with No. 2 pick.
Carr's signing is the biggest move the Panthers have made so far in free agency. Hurney has said they were content with 21 of 22 starters returning next season.

DAVIE ? With the NFL Draft less than two weeks away, a trade by the Dolphins for Kansas City quarterback Trent Green is imminent, a source said Saturday.
Talks between the Chiefs and Dolphins have resumed and should lead to an agreement before the April 28-29 draft, allowing Miami to focus on other needs in the earlier rounds.
