<o></o>GLOBAL 'SUNSCREEN' HAS LIKELY THINNED, REPORT NASA SCIENTISTS
<o></o>A new NASA study has found that an important counter-balance to the warming of our planet by greenhouse gases ? sunlight blocked by dust, pollution and other aerosol particles ? appears to have lost ground.<o></o>
<o></o>The thinning of Earth?s ?sunscreen? of aerosols since the early 1990s could have given an extra push to the rise in global surface temperatures. The finding, published in the March 16 issue of Science, may lead to an improved understanding of recent climate change. In a related study published last week, scientists found that the opposing forces of global warming and the cooling from aerosol-induced "global dimming" can occur at the same time.

"When more sunlight can get through the atmosphere and warm Earth's surface, you're going to have an effect on climate and temperature," said lead author Michael Mishchenko of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), <st1:state w:st="on"><st1>New York</st1></st1:state>. "Knowing what aerosols are doing globally gives us an important missing piece of the big picture of the forces at work on climate."

The study uses the longest uninterrupted satellite record of aerosols in the lower atmosphere, a unique set of global estimates funded by NASA. Scientists at GISS created the Global Aerosol Climatology Project by extracting a clear aerosol signal from satellite measurements originally designed to observe clouds and weather systems that date back to 1978. The resulting data show large, short-lived spikes in global aerosols caused by major volcanic eruptions in 1982 and 1991, but a gradual decline since about 1990. By 2005, global aerosols had dropped as much as 20 percent from the relatively stable level between 1986 and 1991.<o></o>

<o></o>The NASA study also sheds light on the puzzling observations by other scientists that the amount of sunlight reaching Earth's surface, which had been steadily declining in recent decades, suddenly started to rebound around 1990. This switch from a "global dimming" trend to a "brightening" trend happened just as global aerosol levels started to decline, Mishchenko said.

While the Science paper does not prove that aerosols are behind the recent dimming and brightening trends -- changes in cloud cover have not been ruled out -- another new research result supports that conclusion In a paper published March 8 in the American Geophysical Union's Geophysical Research Letters, a research team led by Anastasia Romanou of Columbia University's Department of Applied Physics and Mathematics, New York, also showed that the apparently opposing forces of global warming and global dimming can occur at the same time.

The GISS research team conducted the most comprehensive experiment to date using computer simulations of Earth's 20th-century climate to investigate the dimming trend. The combined results from nine state-of-the-art climate models, including three from GISS, showed that due to increasing greenhouse gases and aerosols, the planet warmed at the same time that direct solar radiation reaching the surface decreased. The dimming in the simulations closely matched actual measurements of sunlight declines recorded from the 1960s to 1990.<o></o>

<o></o>Further simulations using one of the Goddard climate models revealed that aerosols blocking sunlight or trapping some of the sun's heat high in the atmosphere were the major driver in 20th-century global dimming. "Much of the dimming trend over the Northern Hemisphere stems from these direct aerosol effects," Romanou said. "Aerosols have other effects that contribute to dimming, such as making clouds more reflective and longer-lasting. These effects were found to be almost as important as the direct effects."

The combined effect of global dimming and warming may account for why one of the major impacts of a warmer climate -- the spinning up of the water cycle of evaporation, more cloud formation and more rainfall -- has not yet been observed. "Less sunlight reaching the surface counteracts the effect of warmer air temperatures, so evaporation does not change very much," said Gavin Schmidt of GISS, a co-author of the paper. "Increased aerosols probably slowed the expected change in the hydrological cycle."

Whether the recent decline in global aerosols will continue is an open question. A major complicating factor is that aerosols are not uniformly distributed across the world and come from many different sources, some natural and some produced by humans. While global estimates of total aerosols are improving and being extended with new observations by NASA's latest generation of Earth-observing satellites, finding out whether the recent rise and fall of aerosols is due to human activity or natural changes will have to await the planned launch of NASA's Glory Mission in 2008.

?One of Glory's two instruments, the Aerosol Polarimetry Sensor, will have the unique ability to measure globally the properties of natural and human-made aerosols to unprecedented levels of accuracy," said Mishchenko, who is project scientist on the mission.<o></o>

Re: NASA: GLOBAL 'SUNSCREEN' HAS LIKELY THINNED...

so the study from NASA essentially says that the earth's Temp is just correcting itself from low levels of Aerosol in the lower Atmospher are at a 30 year low (Since the study started) and have been decreasing since the early 90's.

Re: NASA: GLOBAL 'SUNSCREEN' HAS LIKELY THINNED...

NO comment from the sheep cause it is very possible that All the Environmental controls that have been put in place could be the cause of the warming trend by taking Aerosols out of the lower Atmosphere that were reflecting sunlight and keeping the earth's temperature cooler....

Imagine that

Researchers Take Poles' Temperature
February 27, 2007 ? By Raphael G. Satter, Associated Press

LONDON -- More than 50,000 scientists from 63 nations turned their attention to the world's poles Monday to measure the effects of global warming, using icebreakers, satellites and submarines to study everything from the effect of solar radiation on the polar atmosphere to the exotic marine life swimming beneath the Antarctic ice.

The International Polar Year unifies 228 research projects under a single umbrella with the aim of monitoring the health of the Earth's polar regions and gauging the impact of global warming. The largest international research program in 50 years, the project officially begins March 1 and ends in 2009 -- to allow each pole to run through a full summer and winter.

"Global warming is the most challenging problem that our civilization has faced," Britain's chief scientific adviser, Sir David King, said in a video played before the event's launch. He called the melting of polar ice "the canary in the coal mine for global warming."

The year is being sponsored by the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization and the International Council for Science. About $1.5 billion has been earmarked for the year's projects by various national exploration agencies, but most of the money comes from pre-existing polar research budgets.

While the increase in resources available to explorers is modest, British scientists said that the project had the potential to yield a complete picture of the threat facing the polar world -- known to scientists as the cryosphere.

"What's different this year is not so much the volume of research funding, but more the coordination of research," said Eric Wolff, a British Antarctic survey scientist.

Besides yielding a more complete picture of the impact of global warming, the cooperation will help tackle polar science's most vexing problems, such as the challenge of trying to quantify the amount of fresh water leaking out from underneath ice sheets in Antarctica. The melting -- which is distinct from the break up of glaciers -- has alarmed climate scientists because it takes place beneath the ice and is difficult to measure.

Wolff said that estimates of the leakage taken from ships off the coast of the continent offered an incomplete picture of the problem because currents could draw the melt to other areas.

"It's only by getting all the ships that you have available to do the same thing at the same time that you get a snapshot of the whole Antarctic," Wolff said.

Other projects include the installation of an Arctic Ocean monitoring system, described as an early warning system for climate change, and a census of the deep-sea creatures which populate the bottom of Antarctica's Southern Ocean.

Few aspects of the cryosphere will escape scrutiny. The Antarctic's lakes and mountains -- some which have been trapped under about three miles of ice for more than 35 million years -- will be sounded. Using telescopes, balloons, and spacecraft, scientists at the poles will investigate plasma and magnetic fields kicked up by the sun -- the dry, clear polar air is ideal for astronomy. Anthropologists are also planning to study the culture and politics of some the Arctic's 4 million inhabitants.

Although each project has its own scope, almost all touch in some way on the fear that the environment they were studying might someday melt away. At the year's launch, it was clear what scientists expected to find amid the ice and snow.

"We are now on an unsustainable path," said Corinne Le Quere, a professor at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. "By seeing the changes as they occur in the region where they will be occurring the fastest, the International Polar Year will provide blinding evidence of the human impact on this planet."

No wrigley it is impossible to lose a debate based on Opinion and speculation... Notice the key words in Most articles... Could, May, predict, etc... Those words don't lead to Factual Statements... they lead to Opinion and Speculation.... It is not my Fault you are too blind and such a sheep to take Opinion Science and place it as fact... Not one person I know has argued the world is not getting Hotter... NOT ONE....that is the only fact in any of these scientific studies... there is not One Thread of Scientific Factual evidence as to why the Temperatures are warming. It is all opinion....If you can't see that then there is no hope for you... you may as well go get a Bull Ring put in your nose and let Al Gore hook a leash to you so when His Propoganda machine goes off a cliff you will go with him from being mislead

DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU POST DIRTY.......THEY ON THE LEFT DON'T CARE ABOUT IF IT IS GLOBAL WARMING OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT......ALL THEY ARE TRYING TO PROVE IS BUSH HASN'T DONE ENOUGH AND AL GORE WOULD HAVE...........

IF BUSH WAS FOR DOING SOMETHING ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING AND GORE MADE A MOVIE SAYING IT WASN'T GLOBAL WARMING.....THEY WOULD BE SINGING A DIFFERENT TUNE............

Re: NASA: GLOBAL 'SUNSCREEN' HAS LIKELY THINNED...

yea...Devil I find it funny that just a few months ago the same people Mocking me now were Praising NASA and saying GWB was trying to make them Lie and say GW wasn't real.. Now NASA has released new studies saying that our own conservations could be causing the global warming for the lack of Aerosols and they just want to dismiss NASA as some Crackpot scientists.... This after they have found TEchnology that constantly Monitors what allows the suns Rays to reach earth..... They just pick and choose who and what they want to use that meets their agenda

Funny how NASA is bullshit to the left since they post science that goes against what they Preach...

Boy am I glad Wrigs came in with Factual Scientific Evidence that could happen in 50 years, Might happen in 30 years, scientists predict will happen in Blah blah blah.... No Scientific Proof of a Damn thing except that the earth's Mean (average for you Global warming sheep who can't think for yourselves) Temperature is 1 degree warmer than it was 100 years ago

Thanks for all the Facts and Total BS thay you sheep are buying into... Al Gore is the Jim Jones of the 2000's
