Giuliani Faces Questions About Sept. 11

NEW YORK -- Rudy Giuliani's White House aspirations are inescapably tied
to Sept. 11, 2001 _ for better and for worse.

While the former mayor of the nation's largest city was widely lionized for his post-9/11 leadership _ "Churchillian" was one adjective, "America's mayor" was Oprah Winfrey's assessment _ city firefighters and their families are renewing their attacks on him for his performance before and after the terrorist attack.

"If Rudolph Giuliani was running on anything but 9/11, I would not speak out," said Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son was among the 343 FDNY members killed in the terrorist attack. "If he ran on cleaning up Times Square, getting rid of squeegee men, lowering crime _ that's indisputable.

"But when he runs on 9/11, I want the American people to know he was part of the problem."

The IAFF drafted a membership letter _ it was never sent _ that excoriated Giuliani and promised to tell "the real story" about his role in handling the terrorist attack.
The then-mayor's decision to change policy on the ground zero recovery effort was "an offensive and personal attack" on firefighters, the letter said, going on to say that Giuliani's "disrespect ... has not been forgotten or forgiven."
Giuliani countered the attacks by releasing an open letter of support from retired firefighter Lee Ielpi, whose firefighter son was among the 2,749 victims on Sept. 11. "Firefighters have no greater friend and supporter than Rudy Giuliani," Ielpi said.
A contingent of nearly 100 South Carolina firefighters also expressed their support for Giuliani and his White House hopes.

I can't help but observe that a lot of people here are talking past each other. It seems as if the very foundation of the conversation is predicated on different interpretations of what is meant respectively by the terms "Republican" and "conservative." (I also question whether the vector of "the right" bears any relationship to the current regime's curious mix of corporate-based authoritarian statism.)
I think it's important to realize that the current image of the Repuglican party bears little or no resemblance to the party of Goldwater/Reagan. It has been hijacked by the Christianists (who goals are sickeningly similar to those of the Islamofascists). By no stretch of the imagination can the current regime--or even the Repuglican party itself--be considered "conservative" by any definition.
A true conservative does not believe the government should be involved in the largest expansion of a benefits program (prescription drugs) since the LBJ administration, or the mortgaging of our future due to levels of government spending and deficits that have never been seen before.
A true conservative believes that America is the champion of Democracy, but defender of only her own; that American treasure should be expended only where a vital interest of the United States is truly endangered.
A true conservative believes that the right to be left alone is one our most cherished rights; that no American government should intrude into the intimate affairs of one's personal life, bedroom or religion.
A true conservative understands that because men are not angels, no person is above the law; that the Constitution is sacred and is in fact the bedrock of the American experiment--not some inconvenient and transitory impediment to be circumscribed, dishonored, ridiculed and violated with impunity in pursuit of the cult of power.
Finally, a true conservative recognizes that because of what America represents and has represented throughout our history, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. We are AMERICANS dammit! That means we believe in the rule of law, which includes due process; We don't give our word as reflected by signed treaties and then violate them later because they're "inconvenient." And lastly, we don't torture!
We abide by these higher standards not because of how they affect others, but because of how failing to do so affects us.
The antics, incompetence, dishonesty, and shear hubris of the current regime have inflicted incalculable damage on the party of Lincoln. No true conservative would claim to support this regime's actions. There are true conservatives, who, like me, realize that we are now entering a period of wilderness; that the current incarnation of the Repuglican party has been found wanting by the people, and must undergo a painful metamorphasis if we are ever to be trusted with leadership again.
Based on what I have set forth above, I don't believe that any of the current candidates attempting to gain the Republican nomination can be considered conservative. There are some worthy candidates out there, however; but this is not their Republican party yet. It will take some more growth-and pain-before the Republican party can once again be trusted to preserve the ideals of Lincoln, Goldwater and Reagan.
