Watched it all and loved every second,Devil! I knew you would be all over this story. I only wish I could have seen Ebbets Field, there were shots that reminded me of a little league park with how close the stands were to the players and the field itself.

The tale about the 2 bullets tells you all anyone needs to know about what a ballclub can mean to someone. What a great job those guys do with these old sports stories! The guy who said to himself over and over that they couldn't move and then was crushed when they did really got me.

That Moses should have been in the room so the guy with the 2 bullets could have shot him AND O'Malley. What an arrogant cocksucker he was. That was your old team, right Devil?

That must have hurt, I'm guessing you lived right in Brooklyn? Was it true what they said about the park smelling bad? I figure any ballpark smells like grass or hotdogs or something good. They made it sound filthy. Maybe at the end when O'Malley wasn't around they let it go is what I'm thinking is more like it. Can you describe the place a little, Devil?

Anyway, there are two things in sports I would have not minded being a couple of years older to have seen-the great 1961 homer chase by the M&M boys, and Ebbets Field. It sounds like the most intimate ballpark in history. Kind of like Fenway without the amenities. Hope Devil will share some more memories.:cheers

You were 12 when they moved-how do you root for another team after that? How about the Asian woman who said she never watched another game after the Bobby Thomson HR? The pain of them leaving forever must have been worse.

IT WAS A CRUSHING BLOW, TO BOTH BROOKLYN AND NEW YORK AT THE SAME TIME.

THE DODGERS WERE SPECIAL TO BROOKLYN, BUT THE GIANTS ALSO HAD A BIG FOLLOWING.

I AM SURE MANY GROWN MEN CRIED WHEN THEIR TEAMS MOVED. BASEBALL WAS DIFFERENT BACK IN THE 50'S, THE PLAYERS DIDN'T MOVE FROM TEAM TO TEAM. SNIDER, HODGES, ROBINSON, REESE, FURILLO, ERSKINE, CAMPY, LABINE.......THEY WERE ALWAYS THERE YEAR AFTER YEAR.

WHEN CAMPANELLA WAS IN THE CAR ACCIDENT AND WOUND UP IN A WHEELCHAIR, HIS CONDITION WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE NEWS FOR WEEKS

How cruelly ironic that Campy was severely hurt in Brooklyn, and never made it to LA with the rest of the Boys of Summer?

This was a great show, I learned alot about why they left. It seems they would still be in Brooklyn if Moses didnt have so much power.

If you liked this program there is another program thats worth watching. I just watched Bud Greenspan Presents Pride Against Prejudice on Showtime. It tells the story of Larry Doby. I thought this was also very well done.

I think the first baseball game I ever went to was at Ebbets Field or the Polo Grounds. Who was Ebbets anyway? Looks like you and I are the same age Devil. I'm originally from Jersey.

I used to sleep over my cousins house in Union then his father would take us to his dry cleaning place in Jersey City. we would do a few chores like sweep the sidewalk and take out the garbage and his father would give us money to go to the ball games. We would take the train to NY then the subways to one of the stadiums. This is when I was 10 and my cousin was 13. Boy have times changed.

The HBO show was a great production. As a New Yorker born in 1952, I never understood the true story about why the Dodgers left since I was too young to care. I became a Met fan in 1962 and have never looked back, but the fact that O'Malley tried to keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn but Robert Moses blocked his attempt to build a stadium at Flatbush Ave. and Atlantic Avenue so the LIRR could deliver fans was an eye opener and showed that O'Malley, a native New Yorker is not the monster I always thought he was. In any event, the Mets ended up moving to the Flushing Meadows where Moses wanted the Dodgers to move and ended up with my 45 year loyalty--including the wildest and greatest ride ever for a fan in 1969. The documentary is definitely worth the time to watch it though.

Baseball owners commonly named their team's park after themselves in the first half of the century-Comiskey Park, Briggs Stadium, Crosley Field, etc. Charles Ebbets was the owner of the Dodgers in the 1910's and he WAS able to get his stadium built. If he knew how dilapidated his baseball palace became and that it was the reason the team left Brooklyn, he would have died all over again, I believe. I'm sure he didn't face the same political obstacles getting Ebbets Field that O'Malley did trying to get his new domed stadium, though.

Glad you finally got to see it, Dirty. I had a similar reaction, it really depicted the bond that develops between fans and their teams in a way that's hard for an uninterested party to understand.

That may have been how I would have felt if, for instance, the Yanks lost at Fenway in '78. I remember wanting that game REALLY bad, but the game that topped that for me was the last game at KC the year before.

I had secured WS tickets and my dream growing up was to go to a World Series game at Yankee Stadium with my dad. When they won the '77 ALCS, I got to fulfill that wish. The tickets were spread out on the kitchen table before the game, as if their mere presence would somehow, magically, effect the result.

The old saying about there being nothing greater than the first time certainly held true that year. I wound up running on the field after Reggie hit the 3 dingers in game 6, after my dad and I saw the Yanks win the opener in extra innings.

Thoughts like that go through my head when I see a show like this one. :cheers

MAYBE YOU HAD TO BE A BROOKLYN DODGER FAN AS A KID TO APPRECIATE IT, BUT I LOVED IT.

ONE REPORTER ASKED A BROOKLYN DODGER FAN AFTER THE MOVE TO LA: IF YOU HAD HITLER, STALIN AND OMALLEY IN A ROOM AND ONLY HAD TWO BULLETS WHO WOULD YOU SHOOT.....THE ANSWER WAS O MALLEY TWICE.

Great Line. HBO did a great job with this story. What a story it was. For ever and ever. AMEN
