Student Arrested, Tasered at Kerry Event

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Sept. 18) -- A university student with a history of taping his own practical jokes was Tasered by campus police and arrested after loudly and repeatedly trying to ask U.S. Senator John Kerry questions during a campus forum.

Student Arrested, Tasered at Kerry Event - AOL News

Andrew Meyer, 21, spent a night in jail before his release Tuesday morning. His attorney, Robert Griscti, did not return messages seeking comment.

Videos of the Monday night incident, posted on several Web sites and played repeatedly on television news, show officers pulling Meyer away from the microphone after he asks Kerry about impeaching President Bush and whether he and Bush were both members of the secret society Skull and Bones at Yale University.

"He apparently asked several questions -- he went on for quite awhile -- then he was asked to stop," university spokesman Steve Orlando said. "He had used his allotted time. His microphone was cut off, then he became upset."

As two officers take Meyer by the arms, Kerry, D-Mass., can be heard saying, "That's alright, let me answer his question."

Audience members applaud, and Meyer struggles for several seconds as up to four officers try to remove him from the room. Meyer screams for help and tries to break away from officers, then is forced to the ground and officers order him to stop resisting.

As Kerry tells the audience he will answer the student's "very important question," Meyer yells at the officers to release him, crying out, "Don't Tase me, bro," just before he is shocked by the Taser. He is then led from the room, screaming, "What did I do?"

Meyer was arrested on charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace, according to Alachua County jail records, but the State Attorney's Office had yet to make the formal charging decision. Police recommended charges of resisting arrest with violence, a felony, and disturbing the peace and interfering with school administrative functions, a misdemeanor.

Orlando said university police would conduct an internal investigation.

"The police department does have a standard procedure for when they use force, including when they use a Taser," Orlando said. "That is what the internal investigation would address -- whether the proper procedures were followed, whether the officers acted appropriately."

Meyer was ordered released from jail Tuesday on his own recognizance.

Meyer has his own Web site and it contains several "comedy" videos that he appears in. In one, he stands in a street with a sign that says "Harry Dies" after the latest Harry Potter book was released. In another, he acts like a drunk while trying to pick up a woman in a bar.

The site also has what is called a "disorganized diatribe" attributed to Meyer that criticizes the Iraq war, the news media for not covering the conflict enough and the American public for paying too much attention to celebrity news.

Re: Student Arrested, Tasered at Kerry Event

I was always taught that you do what the police say, and then you can litigate later if they did wrong. You don't resist arrest.

Should have tazed the kid twice (once just for grins).

But I'm sure the ACLU and every ambulance-chasing media whore lawyer from Gloria Allred on down will just be waiting to get a crack at this kid's having his Constitutional Rights "violated." Stupid behavor deserves what it gets. But, these days, it does seem that "big money" settlements bring out the "constitutional rights violations" in a lot of people.

It's unfortunate the lazy pigs can't figure out how to restrain someone without a tazer.

When tazers were introduced, they were supposed to be an alternative to deadly force. If they didn't have tazers would they have shot this man? Today, they are used for anything.

He shouldn't even have been escorted away, let alone arrested and tazered.

Knowing what you've gone through in your struggles with the US Govt, I'll give you a free pass for your utter disrespek (sic) for authority(lazy pigs). But WTF is Kerry's excuse? He came out with a statement today with implicit criticism for the way the police handled the situation. The police handled this situation with restraint; this kid was out of line from the get go; first he cut in line in front of other students waiting to ask questions; then he asks multiple questions when they were supposed to only ask one question; then he rambled on and on for about 5 minutes asking question after question; this event was not about this kid, it was about John Kerry, who was not given time to answer any of his rambling questions. So the police come to Kerry's assistance and what do they get for their trouble? Kerry throws them under the proverbial bus, just like he did with his military brothers.

But it's not just Kerry, if you watch CNN/MSNBC you'll see plenty of criticism of the police. They showed the video of this punk resisting arrest and disturbing the peace, but apparently they didn't watch it themselves. This punk should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, but being the politically correct society that we live in, he probably won't!

Thats the reason Kerry is not President. If he had any balls he would have stopped the out of control pigs and answered the question. Any person that supports the police in this situation are the typical oblivious Amercans that are in a world of there own. Which are becoming a majority in our once great nation. Give em hell Hillary.

I saw the replay. The kid is a douchebag, but douchebags have rights too. He was a harmless ass-hole that got tasered by some Nazi waana be's. Just cuff him and throw him in the car. WhyTF taser someone who would probably break his hand if he was lucky enough to land a punch? Cops can be colossal ass-holes sometimes. This is one of those times.

Re: Student Arrested, Tasered at Kerry Event

There's a lot more to the story. There is actually some events that went down BEFORE any of the video start.

Apparently Kerry was only taking a few more questions, and this kid darted to the front of the line, cutting in front of other people waiting to get their questions answered. This is why you see police officers directly behind him when he started "asking his question" -- they had chased after him when he darted to the front of the line screaming (which I would hope any security officers there would do with a Senator speaking). Kerry told them it was OK and that he would field his question.

So, you've already got a reason for the cops to be peeved, and that explains why they were directly behind him. If you watch the CNN video, you'll see him completely snap at the security when they asked him to either ask a question or sit down.

He then goes on to ask completely irrelevant questions, but Kerry says he will answer them. After he uses the word "blowjob", they cut his mike off. And he starts yelling his questions -- which is when security attempted to escort him out -- a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

They attempted to escort him out, he resisted arrest, screamed and cursed. They then told him to put his arms behind his back and handcuffed him. He continued to resist. He was told if he continued to resist he would be tazed. He continued to resist, and was tazed.

It's now also been revelaed who the guy is -- a former sports writer for the school paper that used to always make ridiculous statements to get a rise, and was also known for video taping his own practical jokes.

This isn't a freedom of speech issue, this is a guy being a jackass and trying to make a spectacle, and he had it backfire. There's a reason the other people were CLAPPING when he initially got led off.

I agree that the tazing should not have happened, and that there was a better way to forcefully remove the person from the scene without having to rely on a tazer... But the kid deserved to get escorted away.

Students conduct did not warrent UFPD use of tazer.
There both fuked up.

Obviously, every adolescent mind on the Internet will think the cops are Nazis and the kid is Henry David Thoreau practicing civil disobedience at Walden Pond.

But the kid himself admits he acted like an idiot.

Read..

Police report student told them: 'You didn't do anything wrong'

I'm still thinking that once some high-profile injury claims lawyer gets ahold of him, the kid will change his story and become the most unjustly mistreated figure since Joan of Arc. Then some jury made up of twelve Dairy Queen employees will side with him and bankrupt the local police department.

Police departments don't "go bankrupt." However, a nice hit in the municipal budget by a lawsuit or settlement might teach the mayor, city council and police supervisors that adopting an appropriate use policy and training their officers in the proper use of the taser is warranted. JC has correctly stated that the whole premise for the taser when it was introduced was that it would give cops an alternative to "deadly force," which to you and me means shooting. Instead, it has morphed into a sort of electric cattle prod to punish those who don't instantly snap to attention and follow the orders of some beat cop.
The guy was harming no one, he was at the most merely disturbing the peace. Arrest him, okay, but tasering for such a non-violent offense is definitely not okay. Police officers are to protect and serve, not victimize and violate. If two, three or four officers cannot figure out how to peacefully take an unarmed college kid into custody without resorting to a taser, they need to be in another line of work.

4625;
Please read the police report and watch the video again, both are provided in the link in JJ's last post. Several of your statements are just plain wrong. First, the taser wasn't used on this student because he instantly didn't snap to attention and follow the orders of the campus police. This student repeatedly and persistently resisted the orders of the police. He had multiple chances to comply with their orders and avoid being tasered but he persisted as if he was determined to have the taser used on him.
As for him not harming anyone, I have heard reports that 2 of the 6 officers involved were indeed injured in the attempt to arrest him. Furthermore, he could have harmed either himself, one of the officers, or one of the other spectators by his violent resistance. He was definitely disturbing the peace, and the officers had every right to arrest him, and then he violently resisted a lawful arrest.
Insofar as how to take an unarmed college kid into custody peacefully, I would love to hear from you how exactly is this supposed to be accomplished when the college kid does not peacefully comply?

Re: Student Arrested, Tasered at Kerry Event

A taser is not meant to gain compliance, rather it is an alternative to deadly force. The incident did not call for deadly force, or anything remotely resembling deadly force. "Violent resistance" means something more than yelling and squirming, rather it involves conduct that can lead to serious bodily injury or death. I fail to see how waving one's notes around in one hand while squirming away from officers' grasp can lead to serious bodily injury or death. The guy never even struck at the officers with his hands or fists, much less possess any type of dangerous weapon.
If there were in fact six officers involved, none of which could figure out how to get handcuffs on an unarmed, non-violent arrestee--without resorting to taser--then there should now be six vacancies in that police department.
I'm actually appalled that any American could sanction such conduct from a police officer; it truly makes me fear that many of us wish to be subjects and don't mind being treated as such.

Evidently you did not watch the video. He most certainly did strike the officers with his arms, hands, and elbows( I did not see a fist). By your own definition of "violent resistance", ie."it involves conduct that can lead to serious bodily injury", the student was guilty of violent resistance. And he did possess another weapon other than his own body...he had one handcuff applied and was resisting so viloently that the other handcuff could not be applied(once again, apparently you didn't read the police report), and could have struck any of the officers or even the bystanders with the handcuffs!

I truly fear to live in a society where the rights of criminals are given preference over my rights. I have a right to civil discourse; I have the right to peace and non-violence. This student was interfering with my rights and the police did their job to arrest this criminal.

And what about my question...."I would love to hear from you how exactly is this supposed to be accomplished when the college kid does not peacefully comply?

Gosh, Aren't we sorry that you are appalled. 4625.

The kid was an idiot and he got whacked. That's the entire story. Hopefully, he learned from the experience. It's over now. While nobody laughs at your adolescent posts more than I do, the actions are, in fact, borne out of the same adolescence.

You shoud not write 500 words defending the indefensible.

The kid got what he deserved.
