Re: Texas Tech Red Raiders

Good win for ya guys. Glad you got it.

#901

Texas Tech 92, Missouri 84

Martin Zeno scored a career-high 33 points to lead Texas Tech over Missouri 92-84 on Wednesday night, leaving the Tigers winless on the road this season.

The win gave Tech coach Bob Knight his 901st career win.

Tech led by a dozen midway through the first half but Missouri came back to hold a slight edge at halftime. After the break, Missouri built a 49-44 lead before Tech (11-7, 2-2 Big 12) turned things around.

The Red Raiders turned the ball over less and scored on six of seven possessions, using a 15-2 run to go up 65-55 with just more than nine minutes left.

Zeno had 11 during the spurt but the Tigers, who used a full-court press throughout the game, pounced back. They used an 8-2 run to whittle the margin to 67-63 just a couple of minutes later.

After that, Missouri pulled within three points three times, the last at 87-84 with 36 seconds remaining.

The loss extended the Tigers' road-loss streak to five games.

Keon Lawrence scored 24 points, Stefhon Hannah added 17 and DeMarre Carroll got 14 to lead the Tigers (11-8, 1-3).

The Red Raiders, who got hot in the second half, played four guards most of the game. They used their quickness and ball-handling skills to work the ball up the court.

Tech hit on 15-of-22 field goals after the break. Had they hit more free throws the Red Raiders would have sealed the win earlier. They missed 14 of 50 attempts from the line.

Zeno, who went to the line a career-high 24 times, made a career-high 19 of them.

All five Tech starters scored in double figures, with John Roberson adding 25 points, Alan Voskuil 13 for Tech. Damir Suljagic had 10 and Charlie Burgess added 11.

Knight got livid with his players in the first half. Upset at his team's sloppy play, the Hall of Fame coach who's won more Division I men's game than anyone, threw his clipboard to the floor as he sat in a chair chewing out the players during a timeout.

His team had just let a 12-point lead disappear in about three minutes, while Missouri used a 11-2 run to go up 31-29 with about four minutes remaining in the half.

Tech committed five turnovers during the Tigers' streak.

Texas Tech (11-7) vs. (12) Texas (15-3)

Texas Tech (11-7) vs. (12) Texas (15-3)

Texas was stunned after losing its conference opener to an unranked team. Though they've come away with wins in two Big 12 contests since then, the 12th-ranked Longhorns haven't looked much better.

Texas looks to snap out of its funk against conference rivals on Saturday when it hosts Texas Tech.

The Longhorns (15-3, 2-1) opened this season 11-0 for their longest undefeated start since 1981-82, but haven't carried their strong play into their conference schedule. They dropped their Big 12 opener against Missouri on Jan. 12, had to overcome a 13-point deficit to beat Colorado 69-67 last Saturday, and nearly blew a double-digit lead in a 63-61 victory over Oklahoma State on Monday.

Texas is averaging 72.0 points and shooting 42.0 percent from the field against Big 12 foes after averaging 80.5 points and shooting 49.3 percent in non-conference games.

Despite the Longhorns' struggles, Texas coach Rick Barnes remains unfazed.

"Sometimes we overanalyze this, and it's just part of the game. You go through it," he said. "The good thing is we know we haven't peaked. That's the good thing, and I don't think you want to be a team that's playing your best basketball right now.

"Even though you want to play great every time you go out, it's just not going to happen."

Texas salvaged the victory on Monday thanks in part to the clutch play of sophomore point guard D.J. Augustin, who went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final minute and finished with 26 points.

"I just liked his demeanor, the way he carried himself," Barnes said of Augustin, averaging 22.7 points and 5.3 assists in conference games. "The fact that he went up there and made those was really big. We all know how important he is."

Augustin will try to get his team back on track against the Red Raiders (11-7, 2-2), who are coming off a 92-84 win over Missouri on Wednesday. Martin Zeno scored a career-high 33 points - including a career-best 19 from the free-throw line - to give coach Bob Knight his 901st career win.

Knight became the first coach to reach 900 career victories with the Red Raiders' win over then-No. 10 Texas A&M on Jan. 16. His team has won two of three games against ranked opponents this season.

The Red Raiders, though, are just 3-22 against the Longhorns since the formation of the Big 12, including a 2-18 mark against Barnes. They haven't won a road game against Texas since a 75-58 victory on Feb. 24, 1996 - losing 11 straight in Austin.

Zeno has averaged 22.0 points in six games this month, but has scored just 7.3 per game while shooting 21.6 percent (8-for-37) from the field in his last four games against Texas - all losses.

Augustin, meanwhile, averaged 15.0 points and 8.5 assists while shooting 52.6 percent in two games against Texas Tech last season.

Re: Texas Tech Red Raiders

Texas turns it on in second half, downs Tech 73-47.

AUSTIN ? Texas Tech coach Bob Knight, who won the 900th game of his career earlier this month, received a warm welcome Saturday from the sellout crowd at the Erwin Center.

That was the extent of the pleasantries.

D.J. Augustin had 19 points, and A.J. Abrams added 17 as the No. 12 Longhorns overcame shaky shooting by both teams in the first half for a 73-47 victory over the Red Raiders.

The Longhorns have beaten Texas Tech by an average 24 points in the last four meetings in Austin, including a 34-point blowout two years ago that was one of the worst in Knight's 42-year coaching career. In three of those games, Texas Tech has been held below 50 points.

"Texas is just damn good," Knight said. "We have not been good enough and haven't played well enough."

Texas' dominance extends for most of the past decade, winning 12 straight over Tech at home and 22 of 24 overall.

The 26-point blowout was also a refreshing change for the Longhorns, who won their two previous games by two points.

"I wish we could be like that with everybody," said Abrams, who overcame his recent shooting woes with consecutive 3-pointers that put the Longhorns ahead 61-38 with 8:27 left.

Abrams had been in a shooting slump, making only seven of 32 shots from beyond the 3-point arc in the Longhorns' three conference games. He made three of five in the second half Saturday.

"You're always going to go through some ups-and-downs with your shooting," said Abrams, who scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half. "I put in a lot of work for a long time. I know it's going to come back."

The Red Raiders (11-8, 2-3 Big 12) shot 24 percent in the first half and went 15 minutes before cracking the 10-point barrier. Save John Roberson and Damir Sulijagic, the Red Raiders were 1-for-17 from the floor before intermission.

It marked the third time this season UT has held an opponent below 25 percent in a half.

"I don't think there was anything we could have done differently, maybe only if we had shot better, particularly in the first half," Knight said.

The Red Raiders finished with a season low in points and field-goal percentage (36.2). Martin Zeno, Tech's leading scorer, was held to 1-for-8 shooting in the first half and finished with nine points while being guarded by Justin Mason.

Texas (16-3, 3-1) also forced the Red Raiders to commit 15 turnovers.

"Right now there is no harder team to defend than Texas Tech because they catch up in all kinds of ways," Barnes said.

After a similarly poor shooting first half they shot 35.5 percent the Longhorns broke the game open with an 11-2 closing run before halftime.

"It was kind of slow at first," Abrams said. "We wanted to pick the tempo up, and I think their defense got us bogged down on offense. With our style of play, we need to get out and run, so that was our mindset coming into the game. We fell into their trap early in the game and finally got going in the second half."

The Longhorns took advantage of a smaller Texas Tech lineup, frequently working the ball inside to Gary Johnson, Damion James, Connor Atchley and Clint Chapman. The Longhorns also received production from their bench, which accounted for 18 points.

Both teams improved their shooting in the second half: Texas shot 57.7 percent (15-of-26) and Texas Tech shot 50 percent (11-of-22).

Texas Tech, however, never got closer than 13 points in the second half.

Afterward, Knight said he was appreciative of the reception he received by the UT crowd despite falling to 2-13 against the Longhorns in seven seasons as Tech coach.

"I think we've always been treated really well down here. I think I have always been treated well here," Knight said. "I have an appreciation for the University of Texas because of that."

Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma State Game Preview

GAME NOTES: The slumping Oklahoma State Cowboys will try to complete a sweep of the regular season series with the Texas Tech Red Raiders today, as the teams lock horns in Big 12 play at United Spirit Arena. The Cowboys opened Big 12 play with a 74-55 triumph over Texas Tech back on January 12th, but it has been all downhill since then. OSU has dropped each of its past five outings since that win, including a 64-61 setback at Oklahoma on Monday. With the loss, the Cowboys fell to an even 10-10 overall and they also remained winless on the road at 0-5. As for TTU, it has been out of action for a week since losing at nationally-ranked Texas, 73-47, on January 26th. It was the second loss in the past three games for the Raiders, who dipped to 11-8 overall and 2-3 in league play. TTU though, now returns home, where it has posted nine wins against just one defeat. Today's bout is the 41st in the head-to-head series between the Raiders and Cowboys, with OSU holding a 28-12 lead.

The Cowboys are averaging a solid 70.3 ppg this season and they are doing so behind 43.4 percent shooting from the floor and 71.6 percent at the foul line. James Anderson is the team's top scorer at 15.0 ppg and he is knocking down 39.0 percent of his attempts from three-point range. Terrell Harris ranks second in both scoring (10.6 ppg) and rebounding (4.7 rpg), while Marcus Dove contributes 10.4 ppg and a team-high 6.0 rpg. In the team's last game, OSU made just 38.3 percent of its field goal tries compared to a 50.0 percent effort from Oklahoma in a three-point setback on Monday. Obi Muonelo nailed 5- of-9 three-pointers and he finished with 25 points to pace OSU, while Byron Eaton had 18 points.

The Raiders are a sound shooting team, connecting on 47.6 percent of their attempts from the floor, 39.4 percent from downtown and 70.3 percent at the charity stripe. Martin Zeno tops the roster in scoring (16.8 ppg) as well as rebounding (4.6 rpg) and he also has 29 steals to his credit. John Roberson is next in line with 12.3 ppg and he is followed closely by Alan Voskuil, who chips in with 12.0 ppg. In the squad's prior contest, TTU put forth one of its worst shooting efforts of the season, hitting on only 36.2 percent from the field in a lopsided loss at Texas. The team also struggled from three-point land (3-of-13) and at the foul line (10-of-16). Mike Singletary guided the Raiders with 11 points, while Roberson finished with 10 points.

TTU has been at its best at home this season and with a solid shooting performance, it should be able to outlast a struggling OSU club today.

Red Raiders revenge early loss to OSU

Red Raiders revenge early loss to OSU

Looking at this schedule, I just don't see Tech in the NCAA, but we'll just root on em one game at a time. NIT wins are good, also. The BIG 12 is a very good & competetive conference.
