Oil peddlers

The economic calamity now facing our nation can be tied directly to the convening of Dick Cheney's energy task force in the early days of the Bush presidency at a time when oil was going for a mere $35.00 a barrel. Those behind closed door meetings with oil boys from here and Europe resulted in an energy policy focused solely on fossil fuels and tens of billions in subsidies to the oil industry. The crude (no pun intended) reality is that the product Cheney, Bush, and friends have sold and earned forturnes from near their entire adult lives is"oil" and the policies they formulated and deceptively shoved down the American public's unknowing throat is a story of greed and treachery at the highest levels. It would be hard to find a more collossal blunder in the direction of national policy than the decisions forged by Cheney and friends during the course of those secret so-called energy (ie oil) hearings. While Americans remain dependent on OPEC, and Exxon et al are earning record profits as a result of a national policy which has paid mere lip service to alternative fuel forms, what the American people have reaped is a war which will indebt us to the next millenium, the killing and maiming of thousands of our children, and an economy on life support.

Since the dawn of the industrial age, fossil fuel has been the world's major energy source. Oil has driven the industrial engine and at the same time spawned a self-perpetuating, near omnipotent political machine. What this machine doesn't want us to know is that with the massive R&D the problem merits, other energy forms, corn, sugar, who knows what else, can get the same job done. It isn't just bones from which energy can be extracted. But guess what, the oil industry was there first, amassing huge power, and fights with all its resources resisting change as Cheney, Exxon, OPEC and friends work to eliminate or forestall for as long as possible competition from other energy sources while bleeding the economy dry. It's the "undue influence" of the "military industrial comples" Ike warned of in its most un-American, undemocratic and destructive manifestation.

Is Hugo Chavez a fool? His proposal to cap prices at $50 a barrel was made over 2 years ago, when prices were 1/2 of where they are now.
His intention was not to keep oil prices low,but to be able to increase his recognized reserves, which could be produced at prices starting above $40./barrel,and thus allow him to have Venezuela's OPEC production quotas raised.
No matter who gets elected US president Chavez won't lower his prices to a giveaway level,it's a whole different market these days.

Ch?vez seeks to peg oil at $50 a barrel
? Price could see Venezuela producing for 200 years
? Country's reserves may exceed Saudi Arabia's
Venezuelan president Hugo Ch?vez is poised to launch a bid to transform the global politics of oil by seeking a deal with consumer countries which would lock in a price of $50 a barrel.

The price proposed by Mr Ch?vez is about $15 a barrel below the current [2006]global level but a credible long-term agreement at about $50 a barrel could have huge implications for Venezuela's standing in the international oil community.
A $50-a-barrel lock-in would open the way for Venezuela, already the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, to demand a huge increase in its official oil reserves - allowing it to demand a big increase in its production allowance within Opec.

Venezuela's oil minister Raphael Ramirez told Newsnight in a separate interview that his country plans to ask Opec to formally recognise the uprating of its reserves to 312bn barrels (compared to Saudi Arabia's 262bn) when Mr Ch?vez hosts a gathering of Opec delegates in Caracas next month[May 2006].

Venezuela's ambitious strategy to boost its standing in the global pecking order of oil producers by increasing the extent of its officially recognised reserves is likely to face opposition. Some countries will oppose the idea of a fixed price for the global oil market at well below existing levels. Others are unlikely to be happy with any diminution of their influence over world oil prices in favour of Venezuela.

Germany in call for ban on oil speculation

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard
Last Updated: 10:49pm BST 26/05/2008

German leaders are to propose a worldwide ban on oil trading by speculators, blaming the latest spike in crude prices on manipulation by hedge funds.

It is the most drastic proposal to date amid escalating calls from Europe, the US and Asia for controls on market forces, underscoring the profound shift in the political climate since the credit crunch began. India has already suspended futures trading of five commodities.

Uwe Beckmeyer, transport chief for Germany's Social Democrats, said his party would call for joint measures by the G8 powers to prohibit leveraged trading on energy contracts. "It's an extreme step but it has to be done," he told the Berlin media.

Mr Beckmeyer said the last 25pc rise in the price of oil to $135 a barrel had nothing to do with underlying supply and demand. ?It?s pure speculation,? he said.

Here's some recent statements from Hugo Chavez which show that he has other ideas nowadays than capping the price of oil at $50. a barrel, which is so 2 years ago.

CARACAS, Venezuela ?President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela said crude oil would rise to "$400 or $500" a barrel in the event of an attack on his country, the biggest petroleum exporter in the Americas.

The reactivation of the American Fourth Fleet in the Caribbean on July 1 and what he said is a possible American base on the Guajira Peninsula, shared by Venezuela and Colombia, are both threats, Mr. Chavez said in a speech broadcast last night [5/15/2008]from the military academy. The defense minister of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, said his country doesn't plan to give America a base on the Guajira, EFE newswire reported Wednesday.

Mr. Chavez, who has long criticized the American role in Latin America and warned that oil could rise to $200 a barrel in the case of an attack on Venezuela or Iran, said that given recent price increases in the crude market, his previous estimate was too low.
"Now we're at $120 and it's continuing up," he said. "If there's a war against Venezuela, with the oil in this soil, it won't depart from the Venezuelans, it won't go to anyone." Prices are 96% higher than a year ago.
