List some of the greatest one year wonders

One year, one game, one shining moment...who were the ones who reached the highest heights in sport but only for a short time?

'Super Joe' was never the same after winning the 1980 ROY award, he was out of baseball entirely just two years later, he never batted above .214 after his rookie campaign.

How about Brett Boone? I mean not a one year wonder but was there ever a better poster child for steriods? He looks like the pillsbury dough boy and put up the best 2nd base power numbers you could ever want to see. Then he could barely hit a short time after.

Some Super Bowl QB's worth considering for this:
Doug Johnson

Givins of Kentucky went nuts in the final 4..got a first round pick because of that.. AND STUNK. Just had that big final.

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

What about Timmy Smith in that same Super Bowl??

Timothy LaRay Smith (born January 21, 1964 in Hobbs, New Mexico) is a former professional American football player who played running back for the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys. He was drafted out of Texas Tech in the fifth round of the 1987 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, Smith set a Super Bowl rushing record, gaining 204 yards and scoring two touchdowns in Super Bowl XXII. His efforts helped lead the Redskins to a 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos. It was his only significant achievement as an NFL player. His career was plagued with injuries and he retired as a member of the Dallas Cowboys in 1990.

He returned to the news in 2005, though, when he was arrested for allegedly trying to sell cocaine to an undercover police officer in Denver. Smith pled guilty in March 2006 for conspiring to distribute cocaine, and was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison in May.[1] Smith, prisoner registry number 33848-013, was released from Federal prison on March 3, 2008.[2]

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

How about David Wells? Did he really do much other than that big season when he had the perfect game?

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

Wells was a 20 game winner two years later for Toronto, and also won 19 in 2002 when he returned to the Yanks

Had a few good post-season moments as well

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

Brady wasn't a one year wonder though, he did some things 3-4 years previous that no other leadoff man ever did...he was a very solid MLB player before the 50 HR season .

I agree.. But still find it SHOCKING that he knocked out 50 that season and never even got close to that in any other season..

yeah he was obvious 'extra' jacked up that season, the entire team broke the MLB team HR record which at the time was 230 HR.

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

Didn't realize myself how good Wells was until I googled for his stats

239 career wins 54 CG's and 12 Shutouts

Not a bad career to have, and a couple of World Series rings to boot

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

yep, was about to mention him Doc.

Started the 1990 All-Star game for the NL and didn't have a double-digit win season thereafter (or before)

Finished his career 40-65

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

How about Harold Miner??

Won the Slam Dunk contest in his rookie year, people started calling him Baby Jordan and his career went down the toilet soon after

Orville Moody ... the ol "Sarge" won one PGA event: the US Open in 69

Jack Fleck .... driving range Pro who won the 55 US Open at Olympic defeating Ben Hogan in Playoff

Paul Lawrie .... Vad Delved's collapse at the British Open in 99 as Lawrie
defeats Leonard and Van Delvde in playoff

239 wins, yeah I think so. anyone over 200 wins is pretty significant.

no way should warner or rothlisberger be considered...

carl pavano, adrian beltre... look at both of these guys numbers in their last contract year compared to the rest of their career. beltre is a solid player but not worth the money he got from seattle because of his monster year in 04.

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

Buster Douglas

This is your undisputed winner without a doubt. Most shocking upset in history and that was that. He fought a good fight, but we could even call him a one-punch wonder with that one uppercut.

Re: List some of the greatest one year wonders

Wayne Simpson ....

In his first season, Simpson started the year by winning 13 of his first 14 decisions (the loss came when a dropped pop fly let in two unearned runs), including a one-hitter, a two-hitter, and a three-hitter, and was selected for the All-Star team. But shoulder problems limited him to just two appearances after July; he finished 14-3, 3.08. The injury hampered him for the rest of his career; in his only other good season, 1972, he went 8-5 with a 4.14 ERA.
