Re: Do we want PMs here?
Greetings:
The Munchkin Man votes YES for PMs.
In order to clarify the Munchkin Man's position, the Munchkin Man believes that PMs refers to Private Messages.
Private Messages are "in house" messages which may be sent directly from one poster to another, without revealing one's email address.
Private Messages may be read at anytime by the receiving poster.
The receiving poster also has the right to ignore and not answer them.
Therefore, Private Messages do not have to be a nuisance and an imposition upon any other poster.
In contrast, the Munchkin Man would vote NO for IMs.
These are Instant Messages.
These are messages which can be sent from one poster to another and are received instantly.
The receiving poster receives these messages instantly with a brand new window blasting out of nowwhere on his or her computer screeen.
An example of Instant Messages (IMs) are those which are available on AOL, which is the Munchkin Man's server and which the Munchkin Man disabled a long time ago.
The Munchkin Man was tired of getting his screen blasted from messages from web cam girls every 5 minutes.
Another Instant Message feature is provided by Google Talk. The Munchkin Man hates that one too.
As some of you know, the Munchkin Man is a freelance editor of mathematics textbooks. One of the Munchkin Man's Supervisors was a Google Talk fanatic. He would insist that all of his editors be logged onto Google Talk at all times, so that he can see when you were logged on and zap you with an IM at anytime he wanted.
The Munchkin Man went along with this for a while, but the Munchkin Man didn't like it. The Munchkin Man felt this was an invasion of the Munchkin Man's privacy.
Finally, the Munchkin Man told his Supervisor to take his Google Talk and shove it.
The Munchkin Man told him that Google Talk was an invasion of the Munchkin Man's privacy, and that the Munchkin Man did not want a bunch of "eyes" looking at him whenever he was on his computer.
The Munchkin Man would turn on his computer in the morning, and even before logging onto the internet, the Google Talk window would come on, revealing the name of the Supervisor who was also on his computer, as well as about a half dozen editors.
They could all "see" the Munchkin Man instantly.
The Munchkin Man hated that.
The Supervisor told the Munchkin Man that Google Talk was the fastest and most time efficient way to send an Instant Message to one of his editors, especially when faced with the task of meeting a tight project deadline.
The Munchkin Man told him to send the Munchkin Man an email message instead if he needed to get in touch with the Munchkin Man, and that the Munchkin Man would answer it soon enough.
The Supervisor argued that email messages were "too slow" and too much trouble to open and answer.
The Munchkin Man told him if he was too damned lazy to open and reply to one of his email messages, then the Munchkin Man didn't want to work for him.
And so the Munchkin Man and his Supervisor had a parting of the ways.
The Munchkin Man hasn't had a textbook editing project since.
That's why the Munchkin Man had to shift to private tutoring for a new source of income.
The Munchkin Man will no longer consent to sacrificing his privacy with an Instant Message (IM) feature.
On the other hand, the Munchkin Man is okay with Private Messages (PMs) and casts his vote in the affirmative to add this feature to EOG.
Best Wishes,
Munchkin Man
