With eight four-star commitments and four three-star pledges, the Bulldogs have one of the best overall star averages in the nation. July rank: 9 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>The Sooners haven't grabbed as many headlines as Big 12 South rivals Texas and Texas A&M, but this group definitely ranks among the nation's best. The commitment in late July of Darius Jones gives OU one of the best defensive back groups in the nation. Throw in fast-rising cornerback Marcus Trice, and the OU group packs a nice punch with 16 commitments on board and plenty of room for more. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--13--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>13. July rank: 15 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>Maybe it's time to start giving Mississippi State the credit it deserves. Sylvester Croom is tearing it up in the recruiting wars in Mississippi. July rank: 25 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>The Tide climb 10 spots after landing five commitments in the final few days of July. And watch out for Mississippi safety Rod Woodson in the August rankings. He recently impressed at the Hoover 7-on-7 Tournament and has the potential to be one of the biggest steals in the Southeast. Quarterback of the future AJ McCarron impressed at the Elite 11 event. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--16--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>16. Auburn </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterleft>2009 total commits: 18
Headliner: Rodney Scott
July rank: 23 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>Auburn still continues to fly a bit under the radar nationally, but there is plenty of star power in this almost-full class. With 22 commitments and several junior college players yet to be ranked, the class could climb even higher. Wide receiver Cameron Kenney was one of the best players in the Kansas junior colleges last season, and his addition should give the Tigers a real boost on offense. The recent commitments helped Auburn move up seven spots in the rankings. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--17--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>17. Miami </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterleft>2009 total commits: 10
Headliner: Bryce Brown
July rank: 16 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>Small but impressive ? that's the best way to describe Miami's class to this point. With 10 commitments, the 'Canes don't have as many as others in the top 20, but the talent is nothing short of amazing. Running back Bryce Brown showed why he's a five-star prospect at the Top Gun Camp, and the defensive line class already assembled could see the field early in 2009. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--18--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>18. Headliner: Nick Alajajian
July rank: 13 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>You have to think Florida is just waiting for the talent to come flowing in as it has in the past. The Gators have nine commitments, but what an impressive group they are. Six of the nine are at least four-star prospects. With UF involved with many of the nation's best, look for the Gators to climb in the rankings as recruiting moves along. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--19--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>19. Rutgers </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterleft>2009 total commits: 19
Headliner: Tom Savage
July rank: 11 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>The Scarlet Knights have put themselves in a good position to finish with a top-25 class with a strong early haul. Quarterback Tom Savage impressed at the Elite 11 event and ranks among the nation's best. There are several lower-ranked players who could receive bumps in August, and that could push Rutgers even higher next time. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--20--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>20. Stanford </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterleft>2009 total commits: 11
Headliner: Shayne Skov
July rank: 24 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>Jim Harbaugh quietly is putting together one of the nation's best classes. Things definitely look as if they're on the way up in Palo Alto as the Cardinal recently added a commitment from four-star running back Stepfan Taylor, pushing Stanford into the top 20. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--21--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>21. Penn State </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterleft>2009 total commits: 16
Headliner: Eric Shrive
July rank: 19 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>This group of 16 commitments is loaded with some big-time talent on defense. The defensive back class should rank among the nation's best, and plenty of offensive line help is on the way. There were four commitments in July. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--22--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>22. Virginia </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterleft>2009 total commits: 19
Headliner: Dominique Wallace
July rank: 18 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>Virginia has 19 commitments and has a solid foundation for a potential top-25 class. The newest commitment is Laroy Reynolds, who is a solid three-star player from Virginia. He ranks among the nation's top 50 safeties. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--23--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>23. West Virginia </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterleft>2009 total commits: 14
Headliner: Tajh Boyd
July rank: 21 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>WVU's class hasn't been talked about, but there is plenty of offensive firepower ? which should help keep the Mountaineers near the top of the rankings. Quarterback Tajh Boyd showed he has the tools to be a star on the next level at the Elite 11 and Top Gun camps. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--24--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>24. Headliner: Donte Moss
July rank: 17 </TD><TD id=chattercenter>UNC has 13 commitments, and what it has done on defense has been impressive. Two solid defensive backs, a standout linebacker and stars on the defensive line make this a great start for the Heels. Curtis Campbell looks like a real steal from the Chesapeake, Va., area. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--25--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>25. USF </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterleft>2009 total commits: 10
Headliner: Bradley Battles
July rank: NR </TD><TD id=chattercenter>The Bulls have been one of the nation's most underappreciated recruiting programs. USF had an extremely busy June, with nine of its 11 commitments coming on board in that month. There are several other big-timers looking at USF, so the Bulls could climb higher. </TD><TD id=logos> </TD></TR><!--ALSO--><TR id=darkbar><TD id=headbar colSpan=3>JUST MISSED: </TD></TR><TR id=lightbar><TD id=chatterxtra colSpan=3>Duke, Maryland, Missouri, Kansas, Georgia Tech and Texas Tech. Duke a potential top-25 recruiting class? Things definitely are different in Durham, and the success the Blue Devils have had lately is a testament to the new staff. Maryland also has made a nice move up the charts and could be in line for a top-25 class. Missouri and Kansas have put together the best classes in the Big 12 North, which isn't a big surprise based on last season's results. Georgia Tech has done a nice job locally and added plenty of offensive playmakers. Texas Tech has done a nice job of keeping in-state talent at home. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

the buckeyes have continued to bank major talent

OSU only had one elite class from 2003-2007, but last year they cleaned up and it appears they are headed for another huge class. They'll be the team to beat in the big-10 until coach tress leaves.

Maybe not elite in rankings due to lower numbers of recruits 3 of those 4 years (2003 - 15, 2004 - 26, 2005 -18, 2006 - 20, 2007 - 15) but some bigtime players. Usually a school with 25+ recruits makes its way on top by volume and quality (with the exception of USC 04 class with 19 and 7 5*s)

Mich had played on jan 1st in 11 of the last 13 years, but they havent won a bcs game since 2000. Since 2002 michigan recruiting has ranked nationally as follows:
16th
17th
5th
6th
13th
12th
10th

this year they will have a top 10 class, but when you lose your last game of the year so often, as mich has, its hard to be considered elite. Before winning their bowl game last year, Mich had not only been getting their butts kicked by OSU, but they had also lost 4 straight bowl games.

Got that right. OSU recruited a dream team of offensive lineman in 2008 and their right back at it in 2009.

Major credit should go to Luke Fickell who will be a coach for a major college program in the near future. Fickell's career path will resemble Mark Dantonio's.
http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Year=2009&Sport=1&Coach=39#bio

And speaking of Dantonio, MSU is ranked #7. He will have MSU near the top of the B10 and in a BSC bowl in 2 or 3 years.

Where's Iowa? Shame. Shame.

Mississippi State #13? Shock.

Where's UCLA? You can't recruit at UCLA? Pathetic.

yeah the average stars will tell you a bit about the class, but a lot of these schools have success with their depth. a lot of 5 star players dont pan out and OSU is a perfect example of a school thats gotten a ton out of its 3 star kids (Hawk, Holmes, Laurinaitis)

MSU is headed in the right direction, but MSU has never been a destination, i would assume its siply a stepping stone as it was for Saban. Dantonio is not young, but id be surprised to see him a Spartan in 4 years. Id not rule him out at PSU if it were not for hsi age and coach Schiano.

UCLA only has a couple recruits so far. Chow and Rick will bring in a top 20 class, imo, but they should be bringing in top 10 talent in that location.

MSU has 5 big recruits in and 4 are from their home state. The one that is not is from LA and he didnt have an LSU offer. These days you only leave LA if LSU doesn't want you.

Interesting point, but if Dantonio continues his success on the recruiting trail then MSU will become a major program so why would he leave?
Lets be honest, MSU is not a little program like Cincinnati, it's in the B10. And speaking of Saban, MSU will not let that happen again. Money talks and if Dantonio has success at MSU he can name his price.

Re: Rivals latest top 25 recruiting rankings:

Good stuff here, but you know as well as I do that ALOT will change between now and Feb. Alot of players are waiting to see how teams seasons go before deciding. Many players know where they wanna go but schools that are considered "middle of the conference" either help or hurt themselves based on their record.

Money talks, but MSU doesn't have what some have to offer and, the fact is, they arent a sexy name and will never be as easy to recruit to as some schools. My uncle was offered more money to be Sabans OC than he was Bob Davies'. He took the job at ND without much hesitation and the rest is history. MSU will always be the 2nd school in that state and they'll just don't offer what a lot of the nations top recrutis want year in and year out. They are putting together a nice class, but i believe this to be a stepping stone school right now.

I actually don't think many kids pay a ton of attention to how well the school does the season before they commit. Kids want to know who is coming in the class with them, they want to know about the fans, they want to know about the conference, they want to know if their school/coaches send kids to the nfl, they want to know the depth chart, and they want to know where they will fit in at the next level. from my experience in following recruiting and having some people in the fam working in football, that is what ive been told.

Re: Rivals latest top 25 recruiting rankings:

We have alot of kids "on the fence" at South Carolina. It is because of our mediocracy. Alot of athletes wait to see how we perform during the season because it appears we are getting better but they want us to prove it.

Maybe not the case with many schools, but I know it is with us. We need to get over the hump, but in the toughest conference, and everybody else is getting better too it makes it even harder to become a powerhouse. It is now or never, IMO.

yeah thats true for a program like SC. If they ha a better team, the best DE prospect in the land, Carlos Dunlap, would be a gamecock instead of a gator. It certainly comes down to that with some kids and some programs, but many of them like tn, lsu, mich, bama, and others will recruit well no matter how many games they win so long as they have their staff intact. South Carolina is a school thats never won anything, its not easy to turn a program completely around. SC has had a top 6 class and they've had a top 25 class in each season coach spurrier has been there, thats a move in the right direction.
