Money Talks Finals: The Shrink Throws Down the Gauntlet, Says Fat Jack is Running Scared
It?s the man with the best record versus the doctor of handicapping in the winner-take-all finals of the $80,000 Leroy?s Money Talks Invitational set for 10 p.m. this Friday at Crazy Leroy?s Sports Book in the Riviera on the Las Vegas Strip.
Ken ?The Shrink? Weitzner has guaranteed victory while Fat Jack Ross of Norman, OK says he?s the man to beat with a tournament record of 16-5.
"There is only one person who has the record in the contest to even remotely think about guaranteeing anything and that would obviously be me with my record,? Ross said. ?I think his guarantee is just a silly statement."
The Shrink is only too willing to back up his guarantee with a $10,000 side bet.
?Let?s just make it winner takes a nice, round $100,000, Weitzner said. ?Look at the odds already posted on matchbook.com, I?m clearly the favorite.? (-115?risk $115 for $100 return).
?The Shrink? filled out the first spot in the finals a solid 5-2 card to drop Generous Jay (4-3). His tournament record stands at 11-10. Weitzner?s Eye on Gambling (www.eog.com) Web portal and handicapping forums have been singing The Shrink?s praises.
The confident Shrink has had a fabled run through Vegas; the former practicing psychiatrist was the manager of Bill Walters? betting syndicate for more than five years and then became an early adapter and watchdog of offshore sports books and Internet gambling sites.
Ross, a Web handicapper from Norman, OK, and syndicated radio talk show host posted a 5-2 card to drop Vegas wise guy Steve Fezzik (2-3-2). The Shrink also posted a 5-2 semifinal win, and has a slight edge in the momentum game with his best bet winner.
?I certainly realize that it takes just one bad week and the tournament is over,? Ross said. ?What Leroy?s Money talks has done has given me a little more notoriety and hopefully a little more credibility with the hardcore Vegas sports bettor.?
Ross, who is also a real estate investor, has been featured on the reality show American Casino and can be seen on the Ultimate Poker Showdown. He runs www.thefatjack.com handicapping subscription web site, now in its seventh year. He also produces the Fat Jack Sports Hour, broadcasting on 30 radio outlets.
There has been some chatter about ?chopping the pot? but nothing official from the two competitors.
?If he wants to chop the pot, then I guess that would be a sign that he is running scared,? The Shrink said.
Match winners are determined by the best record on seven college and/or pro picks against the spread. A ?best-bet? designated among each player?s picks will settle any ties. The 16 invitational players? record remains below .500 at 101-103-6. The players? best bets have been anything but ? with a disappointing tally of 10-17-1.
The "Money Talks" show is broadcast from 10-11 p.m. on Fridays as part of the Leroy?s Sports Hour with host John Kelly on KLAV 1230-AM in Las Vegas and on Fox Sports 1450-AM in Reno. Each show features the handicappers? rationale -- whether a gut feeling or in-depth statistical analysis. All picks, standings and brackets will be posted at www.leroys.com.
