Irishman, been there...done that my friend.

Let me tell you a story of someone. He loved the thrill of football and basketball betting during his younger years. Would go balls to the walls...just win baby, just win. The problem was he lost large sums of money. Then he realized to win at sports, it takes hard discipline to be a winner. Once he became a winner, it became fun again. This dude would set a sum of money for NCAA and NFL football...say $10,000. He would bet NO MORE than 2% of that bankroll on any one game ($200). If he played ten games on a Saturday, he would risk $1000 of his bankroll...$200 per game. NEVER EVER over 2% on a game. No UNIT BULLSHIT, no GAME OF THE YEAR, no STEAM PLAY, no HOT TIP. Just 2% of his $10,000 bankroll for the season. If he lost his bankroll...he was through until basketball season. Once this dude understood this method that people who do this for a living get by on...He has not had a losing season with his personal bets in years. It takes study and work, but it is the ONLY way to win long term.

You are a good kid Tim, I can tell by your attitude with your comments. Winning for the season, not the week is the only way to play if your are serious about this stuff.
It's a marathon and not a sprint and takes "Try" to be successful. Saw where a kid played 20% of his bankroll on one play. Hope to never see that again my friend. Good luck to you Bud.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

Absolutely. We had a terrible day yesterday, ending up 2-4. We are now 4-7 for the season, a disasterous start. But we will be back next week, plucking away again. Next week porjects as one of our weakest, so watch and see how well we do. It never fails in this game.

Thanks clover, I appreciate that. While I did lose a decent amount this weekend, my post was actually in the wake of the ND-Michigan game. Needless to say it was in the heat of the moment. While I'm still somewhat suicidal, I've come to my senses a little bit and will be here all week looking at your thoughts.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

Things are beginning to sort themselves out a bit. We know that the Big 12 is down to the Big 1 now. Texas controls their own destiny, as far as the BCS and NC games go, but the Oklahoma and Oklahoma State losses did not help their cause. There was simply no excuse for Okie State last Saturday.

The power in the SEC has shifted to the West. Sure Florida is still the odds on favorite to win it all, but the East really has no other teams that can challenge them. Georgia is down this year, and once again ravaged with injuries. Tennessee's offense looked terrible against UCLA. They could not defeat a team that racked up under 200 yards total offense. South Carolina runs hot and cold. Vandy was not very good going in, and has been hit with injuries. Kentucky remains the wild card. In the West, Alabama, Mississippi and LSU are all solid contenders. Arkansas is actually favored over Georgia at home this week. Auburn has found an offense to go with their defense. Only Mississippi State appears to be very weak. So the East has the favorite, but the West has the balance in the SEC.

Once again, the Big 10 fails to beat the Pac 10. To their credit, the Big 10 kept it close, but a loss is a loss. Purdue had the lead against Oregon, but could not hold on. Ditto Ohio State at home against USC. This makes the Big 10 1-6 against the Pac 10 since last year, with 2 games left. I suggest the Big 10 gives up scheduling the Pac 10 for the near future.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
Through two weeks, SEC schools have compiled a 13-2 record against non-conference opponents. That .887 winning percentage puts the league on pace for one of its best showings in more than a decade when playing outsiders. The next best winning percentage came in 1997 when SEC teams won 88.9 percent of its games (32-4) against non-conference foes. The two teams to drop non-SEC games in the first two weeks of the season were Georgia (Oklahoma State) and Tennessee (UCLA).

Florida's Tim Tebow was named SEC offensive player of the week. The league also named LSU defensive end Rahim Alem defensive player of the week Monday, while Georgia return man Brandon Boykin received special teams honors. Tebow passed for 237 yards, ran for 71 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in a win over Troy. Alem had seven tackles and a key fourth quarter sack in a win over Vanderbilt. Boykin had a 100-yard kick return in Georgia's victory over South Carolina. His 187 return yards was second most in Bulldogs history. Offensive lineman honors went to Georgia tackle Clint Boling, while Auburn end Antonio Coleman was defensive lineman of the week. Alabama tailback Trent Richardson was the top freshman performer.

TENNESSEE
Despite Tennessee's struggles on offense, the defense has remained strong, keeping the Vols in the game against UCLA despite a number of turnovers. When you turn the ball over four times and go 25 percent on third down, your offense will have problems.
Through two games, Tennessee ranks third in the Football bowl Subdivision in total defense (134.5 yards per game), 13th in pass defense (87 ypg), 20th in rushing defense (59 ypg) and 27th in scoring defense (13 ppg).

AUBURN
The Tigers' misdirection offense has the two leading runners in the SEC, is second in the nation in rushing, is fourth in the nation in total offense and is light years ahead of when it finished 76th, 97th and 104th for 2006-08. Auburn jumped Mississippi State 49-24 with 589 yards Saturday and will look to continue its success Saturday against West Virginia.

VANDERBILT
Bobby Johnson is about to find out just how much depth he has in his eight season at Vanderbilt. Johnson confirmed Monday he has lost two starters for the rest of the season to injuries, senior free safety Ryan Hamilton, who tore a pectoral muscle. Hamilton is a co-captain who started his 34th straight game vs LSU Saturday. The Dores also lost starting right tackle James Williams to a dislocated left ankle. He will have surgery later this week.

ALABAMA
It doesn't seem like a huge deal, but it likely is bothersome for Alabama that it has allowed two kickoff returns for touchdowns already this season. After giving up a 98 yarder to Virginia Tech in the opener, Alabama watched Florida International run one back 96 yards for a score. The Tide gave up one last year in the season opening victory against Clemson. It's odd to see this happen to Bama three times in a space of 15 games. The Crimson Tide once went through a stretch of 24 years without giving up one. In all three of those recent instances, Alabama looked dominating otherwise. But are the last two returns flukes or symptoms of bigger problems?? Former Michigan State head coach Bobby Williams is in his second season as the Tide's special teams coordinator and one or two more run backs will be his last!

Quarterback Greg McElroy broke the school record Saturday with 14 consecutive completions. He would have had 15 straight but Jones dropped a touchdown right in his hands.

WEST VIRGINIA AT AUBURN
Auburn faces the biggest test of its season so far when West Virginia visits Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday. The Tigers have rolled out to a 2-0 start, but Louisiana Tech and Mississippi State haven't put up much of a fight along the way. West Virginia comes in 2-0, but have struggled to wins over Liberty 33-20 and East Carolina 35-20. It helps Auburn's case that this one is at home and playing at night. The Tigers have won 17 of their last 20 night games at Jordan-Hare, including three victories against top seven opponents.

NORTH TEXAS AT ALABAMA
Despite having allowed 38 points in two games, Alabama ranks 10th in the nation in total defense and fifth against the run. North Texas is without its starting quarterback, Riley Dodge, the son of head coach Todd Dodge. Riley will sit with a separated shoulder suffered in last week's double overtime win over Ohio. North Texas will turn to fourth year junior Nathan Tune, who has thrown only 28 passes in his college career. That includes 15 attempts against Ohio. He completed nine for 69 yards with an interception.

TENNESSEE AT FLORIDA
In a fun, interesting off season, new Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin accused Florida coach Urban Meyer of cheating and said he was looking forward to singing "Rocky Top" all night long after beating the Gators. Kiffin may get to sing some day, but not in this instance. Meyer's Gators are looking to beat a little sense into Kiffin, and they have the hores to do it. This one could get ugly for the Vols.

GEORGIA AT ARKANSAS
The Bulldogs rank last in the league in points allowed, and they're about to face one of the SEC's better offenses. Georgia has a five game win streak in the series, with the last loss coming in 1993. Arkansas has had an extra week to get ready for this one.

NEBRASKA AT VIRGINIA TECH
The Cornhuskers were the team of the 1990s, having won 108 games and three national titles in that decade. They've gone 38-26 since the start of the 2004 season. At home, I love VT in this one.

TEXAS TECH AT TEXAS
Remember this one from last year? Tech won on that last gasp touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree. Texas eventually lost a chance to play Florida for a national championship because of this loss. Revenge won't be easy for the Longhorns, however, even though Tech quarterback Graham Harrell has completed his eligibility. Behind new quarterback Taylor Potts, the Red Raiders lead the nation in passing offense.

LOUISVILLE AT KENTUCKY
The Wildcats have won 15 straight against non-conference opponents, including two against Louisville. Remember when Louisville use to be a feared opponent. Not any longer.

MISSISSIPPI STATE AT VANDERBILT
The Bulldogs are 110th in the nation against the run, while the Commodores are ninth in rushing offense. Should be a tight game for a half then Vandy will take over.

SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AT OLE MISS
Southeast Louisiana has rolled up 110 points in two games, but it came in wins over Texas A%M-Commerce 41-7 and Union (Kentucky) 69-20. Ole Miss has had an open date to get ready for South Carolina. Yeah, they play SE Louisiana this week.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

USC will start Aaron Corp at QB tomorrow, as Matt Barkley's shoulder is still giving him trouble. These bruises can take weeks to heal. Joe McKnight has the flu, and while he will play tomorrow, the amount of playing time he seees is questionable. Taylor Mays is also expected to see limited time because of an injury.

Out of the SEC's 13 wins to start the season, 4 have come against FCS schools, and the biggest name they have defeated is Va. Tech. The four big games, South Carolina vs N.C. State, Alabama vs Va. Tech, Georgia vs Okie State, and Tennessee vs UCLA, produced a 2-2 record. The SEC also scheduled 11 games against FCS opponents this year. The SEC has 9 non-con games left against BCS conference teams. Oddly enough, 3 of those games are against Georgia Tech.

Texas has some work to do against Texas Tech, and they know it. Just winning may not be good enough. USC and Alabama are closing in on the Longhorns in the polls. Part of this is because Texas has not looked overpowering in defeating two soft opponents (La. Monroe and Wyoming). Texas is 0-2 ATS. Texas Tech can still throw the ball, so this should be a good test for Texas. The line has jumped from 16.5 to 18 recently in Vegas. Those of you who took Texas and gave the 16.5 probably have a very good wager. At least I hope you do.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

Another tough day, though we salvaged it by taking Miss. State and the under in the second half. 3-3 for yesterday. 7-10 for the year, -4.0 units. Not real good.

USC was a major disappointment yesterday. 3-4 fumbles. 2 INT's. Corp looked terrible. Washington did not do anything spectacular on offense, but USC did nothing at all. Just a terribly played game. Why is it always after a big win?

Both Texas and Florida did not look sharp. Texas really needs to work on pass defense. I have no idea what Florida was doing on offense. I did like Tebow running over Eric Berry though. The team that really impressed us was OU. It is not just that they scored 45 points, but that they shut out Tulsa, a pretty good scoring team.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
Georgia quarterback Joe Cox, Auburn linebacker Craig Stevens and Kentucky return man Derrick Locke have been named Southeastern Conference players of the week. Cox earned offensive honors after passing for 375 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Arkansas. Stevens returned his first career interception 15 yards for a decisive touchdown with 3:24 lift in Auburn's win over West Virginia. He had a career high 11 tackles. Locke won the special teams award after returning a kick 100 yards in Kentucky's win over Louisville. He had 310 all purpose yards. Offensive line honors went to Florida center Maurkice Pouncey. Mississippi State end Pernell McPhee claimed defensive line honors. South Carolina tailback Jarvis Giles was freshman of the week.

TEXAS
A kiddie drink and an old lunchbox standard got Colt McCoy through a tough win over Texas Tech. The senior quarterback for No. 2 Texas had the flu last week, causing him to miss a day of practice and kept him out of most drills. By Saturday night, he said he was still not feeling well while the Longhorns staggered to a 10-3 halftime lead. But a halftime spent downing peannut butter and jelly sandwiches and slugging back Pedialyte, a children's hydration drink, made him feel better. For the record, McCoy likes the grape flavor. It made a big diffenence on the field. McCoy was 15 of 18 passing in the second half and threw his only touchdown in the 34-24 win.

OKLAHOMA
Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford attempted to go through quarterback drills with Oklahoma yesterday as he rehabs from a sprained right shoulder. Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said after practice that Bradford was doing more today than he's done but he also said don't read anything into it. Receiver Ryan Broyles says Bradford's participation was limited to short throws without requiring him to make a full follow through. Bradford has missed the last two games for the Sooners after spraining the AC joint in his throwing shoulder just before halftime in the team's season opening loss to BYU.

ALABAMA
Julio Jones and Roy Upchurch returned to practicing at full speed Monday after missing the previous week's worth of practice with injuries. Jones, a receiver, and Upchurch, a running back, were back wearing white uniforms in Monday's indoor practice. The Alabama pair wore black non-contact jerseys a week ago while doing strength and conditioning drills off tho the side. Jones bruised his knee during the win over Florida International, while on the same evening Upchurch suffered a high ankle sprain. Neither played Saturday in the 53-7 win over North Texas.

Quarterback Greg McElroy had another solid day completing 13 of 15 passes against North Texas.

AUBURN
The Tigers will make its first appearance on ESPN when it plays at Tennessee on October 3. The network announced its decision to pick up the game on Monday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Auburn has played two games on the ESPN family of networks this season. ESPNU broadcast the Louisiana Tech game and ESPN2 televised the West Virginia game.

ARKANSAS
Arkansas linebacker Jerry Franklin is expected to start this weekend at No. 3 Alabama after being ejected against Georgia on Saturday night. Franklin was called for two personal fouls at once and was thrown out in the second quarter of the Razorbacks' 52-41 loss. The SEC said Monday he would not be suspended. Petrino said after the game he was told Franklin was thrown out for pushing two players in the facemask and then bumping into an official's back. Arkansas led 21-10 at the time and had just intercepted a pass around midfield. After the ejection, Georgia scord 17 straight points before halftime. Petrino said Monday that Franklin was set to start against the Crimson Tide. Franklin was Arkansas' leading tackler last season.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

Along the Pac 10 Trail:

At USC, QB Matt Barkley is listed as "probable" for the game against Washington State, as is DB Talyor Mays. Word is to get Barkley some work, get a nice lead, and then get him out of the game. Mays will see limited action. USC goes to Cal next week.

Speaking of Cal, these next two weeks will decide their fate in the Pac 10. Cal goes to Oregon this week, and then hosts USC next week. These are the two biggest back to back games for Cal in many a year, and both will be televised by ABC. Two wins just about guarantee the Bears a trip to the Rose Bowl, a place they have not visited in January since 1960.

Upstart Washington faces Stanford in a game that will have bowl implications. Stanford lost to Wake, and has a very difficult schedule at the end of the year. A Stanford loss really puts a dent into their post season bowl plans. We shall see if Washington is for real this week or not.

The Arizona-Oregon State game has drawn a bunch of attention, and some very strange wagering. Arizona was favored 3 times on the road last year, but only once in the previous 4 years under Stoops. The only time Oregon State has been a home dog in the last two years was against USC last year, and we all know what happened in that game. Oregon State is about a 3 point dog in this game, despite playing at home and having a 9-1 ATS record against Arizona in their past 10 meetings.

FLORIDA
The No. 1 Gators kept six more players out of practice Tuesday because of flu like symptoms. Florida coach Urban Meyer said starting linebacker A.J. Jones was among those feeling ill. No player has had a confirmed case of swine flu, but Meyer has expressed concern that the virus could ravage the defending national champions. Receivers coach Billy Gonzales, who was sent home the day before because he had a fever, returned to practice Tuesday wearing gloves and a mask. Also not at practice were defensive back Josh Evans, receiver Justin Williams, running back Mike Gillislee, defensive end Earl Okine and offensive lineman Shawn Schmieder.

TENNESSEE
The Tennessee football team's woeful passing game has lost its leading receiver for at least one game, and possibly a few more. Senior Quintin Hancock, who comfortably leads the team with 11 receptions and 128 yards through three games, injured his jaw in last Saturday's loss to Florida. Hancock will miss at least Saturday's game against Ohio, and might also miss critical SEC home games against Auburn and Georgia the following two weeks. Hancock's injury came on the reception he fumbled out of bounds.

ALABAMA
Earning his undergraduate degree in three years made Greg McElroy one happy quarterback. Although his enrollment in a masters program means taking night classes, McElroy's mornings can involve more football work. "It's pretty enjoyable sleeping in and relaxing, watching film during the day," McElroy said. The quarterback was able to earn his bachelor's degree by taking 15 hours every summer. Low grades have never been an issue for McElroy since the worst he has ever had is a B+. He is one of 13 players on the Alabama roster who possess undergrad diplomas.

For all the statistical categories the Alabama defense leads, the one lagging behind bothers the unit more than anything. They crave more turnovers. Through three games, the SEC leader in rushing and total defense has recovered just two fumbles, both on special team and intercepted one pass. Cornerback Javier Arenas said there is no secret to upping the fumble numbers. Just start ripping the ball out.

OREGON'S CHIP KELLY
Apparently, when the Oregon Ducks fans think their team doesn't play well enough, new head coach Chip Kelly Pays the price. In his debut as the Ducks' head coach, normally high scoring Oregon didn't get a first down in the first half, senior LeGarrette Blount punched a guy on the other team, and the Ducks lost to Boise State 19-8. It couldn't get much worse than that in a coach's first game, and playing on national television made it a complete disaster. How do you repair that damage? Well, Kelly wrote one fan who complained a check for his ticket, travel and lodging to the road game. Seems Coach Kelly didn't make any excuses saying "I'm sorry" in the form of a $500 check. Way to go Coach!

HANDICAPPING TIPS
(Tips from 24 professional cappers)

*Never force a play for the sake of having action.

*When you win on Saturday, don't give it back on Sunday.

*ALWAYS BET THE SAME ON EVERY GAME!

*Look closely at teams when they are playing in a similar game they have played in the past.

*Use proper money management; it's one of the key ingredients to a winning recipe.

*Remember that sports wagering is a marathon and not a sprint.

*Read local newspapers every day.

* Always shop for the best number that you can get.

*Focus your efforts on one or two conferences where you can develop a real feel for the teams.

*Remember to stay disciplined and shop for the best lines from the most reputable sources.

*Don't be afraid of dogs; they cash just as often as favorites.

*Three things can happen when you bet on a dog, and two of them are good!

*Accepting losses...Learning from losses...and budgeting for losses.

*Invest with your head and not with your heart.

*Being conservative and patient pays off!

*You must have the unbridled desire to succeed and be willing to make adjustments when change is warranted.

*Bet on teams to have an emotional letdown after a big win.

*Bet within your means and keep a long term approach.

*Always shop for the best price!

*Don't invest or trust in bad teams no matter how good they may look.

*Avoid public underdogs. When the points look too good to be true, they usually are!

*Stay unemotional.

*Formulate a game plan and make adjustments accordingly.

*NEVER BET MORE THAN 2% OF YOUR BANKROLL ON A SINGLE GAME!!!!

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

Mississippi's loss was certainly no suprise to us. As I said before the season started, Mississippi was, and still is, over-rated. Everyone forgot about the fact that they lost 4 games last year, one to the same South Carolina team that just dispatched them last night. People who wagered on Mississippi got suckered in by the hype put on them by ESPN, and some alleged "experts" in here. Many of them lost big time. That is what you get for betting with your heart and hype, and not your head.

As far as the alleged 'capper that wagered 10 units on Mississippi, I will only say this. If you have any credability at all, you would post your season record. If you are going to talk the talk, you had better be willing to walk the walk. Losing 10 units has to be huge, unless you are one of the many people who post on line and bet a dollar a unit. I do not want to see some 25 unit wager this weekend. That loses all of your credability. That puts you straight into the dollar a unit catagory. This is nothing personal, but Clover brings up a good point. As far as these sites are concerned, it is all about credability, and the vast majority of people in here do post their record, be it a winning or losing one. So either post your W-L record, or stop trying to be something you are not.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

ARKANSAS AT ALABAMA
This game does offer an interesting offense vs defense matchup. Arkansas leads the SEC in total offense, while Alabama is first in total defense. But to win, it's best to be balanced, and along those lines, consider this; Alabama ranks ninth in the country in total offense. Saban is 5-2 against Arkansas, including 2-0 at Alabama. In both of those matchups while wearing crimson, Saban found the Razorbacks just couldn't slow the Tide's attack. Razorback QB better button up today!

BALL STATE at AUBURN
Ball State is coming off its best season by going 12-2 last year. However, the Cardinals lost their last two games and their coach, Ball State alumnus Brady Hoke, who is now head man at San Diego State. The team just isn't as good and is working on a five game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Tigers are charging forward behind a rejuvenated Chris Todd at quarterback and an offensive line that's much stronger physically than it was a year ago.

MIAMI at VIRGINIA TECH
If you listen to some of the national analysts, Miami quarterback Jacory Harris already has the Heisman Trophy wrapped up. Anything positive by the quarterback today will be earned against a good Tech defense. I playing VT plus the points in this one.

OHIO at TENNESSEE
The Vols are fifth in the country in total defense, while Oho needed double overtime to score 31 in a win over North Texas. Maybe the Tennessee offense will show up today, then maybe it won't.

IOWA at PENN STATE
Good news for Penn State: The Nittany Lions haven't allowed more than seven points in a game. Bad news for Penn State: PSU has compiled that while facing Akron, Syracuse and Temple, hardly world beaters. Good news for Penn State: Despite the unbeaten record, Iowa hardly is a world beater either.

ARIZONA STATE AT GEORGIA
Fifth year senior quarterback Joe Cox was SEC player of the week last week and seem's to have finally found his football legs. Cox helped Georgia hang 41 points on a good South Carolina defense. I don't know a thing about Arizona State..........

FLORIDA at KENTUCKY
This is one of those dreaded swing games for Florida, which is coming off an emotional win over Tennessee and must travel to No. 7 LSU next week. The Gators' one loss last year came the week after they beat Tennessee. That's when Ole Miss bit Florida in Gainesville.

INDIANA at MICHIGAN
In the last 23 years, Indiana has started 3-0 five times. The Hoosiers moved to 4-0 only once in that span. They won't this year either.

LSU at MISSISSIPPI STATE
The Tigers' typically strong run game ranks only 10th in the SEC, but the Bulldogs might offer a cure because they rank last in rushing defense.

UTEP at TEXAS
Former Alabama coach Mike Price (never coached a game) got off to a strong start at Texas-El Paso with consecutive 8-4 seasons in 2004 and 2005. But Price has had three straight losing seasons since then, and in his five years at El Paso, his defense hasn't allowed fewer than 300 points in a year. Now the offense is struggling too, as UTEP ranks 103rd in the nation in total offense. Texas can name the score in this one.

Quarterback Robert Griffin will miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury, a huge blow to a team that had beg expectations based largely on the standout sophomore. An MRI done Sunday revealed that Griffin has "an isolated tear" in his ACL. He sustained the injury in the first half of the Bears' 68-13 victory over Northwestern State on Saturday night. Griffin accounted for 28 touchdowns (15 passing, 13 rushing) as a freshman last year.

FLORIDA
Gator quarterback Tim Tebow is back home after spending the night in the hospital with a concussion. Tebow was released from a Lexington, Kentucky, hospital Sunday morning, about 12 hours after sustaining a concussion in the Gators' 41-7 victory at Kentucky. He was held for precautionary reasons and test. Head coach Urban Meyer, who stayed behind with Tebow said his star QB was doing fine.

Head coach Gene Chizik said his team sleepwalked through the first quarter against Ball State who led 7-0 early before Auburn made it 7-7. Then the Tigers pulled away and didn't look back. During a stretch of four possessions, the Tigers scored touchdowns on drives of 50 seconds, 110 seconds, 33 and 31 seconds. The quick strike ability makes Auburn dangerous from any point on the field. Auburn won't be able to survive many slow starts with the SEC schedule coming into full force. One area Auburn must improve is special teams. They seem to have regressed after four games rather than getting better.

ALABAMA
Bama remained No. 3 in both major polls, but picked up another sports writing believer. Ray Ratto of the San Francisco Chronicle became the fourth writer to rank the Tide No. 1 on his Associated Press ballot. He joined Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, John Adams of the Knoxville News Sentinel and Doug Lesmerises of the Cleveland Plain Dealer as voters who ranked Alabama ahead of Florida, Texas and everyone else in the nation.

Linebacker Donta Hightower will need surgery to repair the knee injury suffered Saturday against Arkansas. With the injury, Hightower's sophomore is over. The 2008 freshman All-American is one of Bama's best defensive players. He has played in four games so he cannot qualify for a medical redshirt. Huge loss for what may be the best Alabama defense in 20 years.

Quarterback Greg McElroy is ranked second in the nation's passing efficiency ratings. He has completed two-thirds of his 93 pass attempts for the third ranked Tide while spreading the wealth among a group of 11 receivers, running backs and tight ends who have at east three receptions each

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

Damn, hate that for Hightower. He was a "Big" part of that defense. Will miss his pass rush with that speed he has for a big man !!! The good was Upshaw played a good game and will step right in that LB spot with Reamer !!

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

AS long as 'Bama can continue to score the way they are now, they will be ingood shape. They do have a tough schedule. For some reason, they simply do not do well at home against LSU and Tennessee. Their 4 week run of at Ole Miss, Tennessee, South Carolina, and LSU at home will tell the tale.

I have no idea of what to expect from my USC team against Cal this Saturday. They played the Wazzu game like a scrimmage, looking at Barkley's arm. They were very sloppy and lazy. They had tons of penalties. Cal really got it kicked out of them at Oregon. You have to wonder how much that took out of them.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
Georgia receiver A.J. Green, South Carolina linebacker Eric Norwood and LSU return man Chad Jones were named SEC Players of the Week. Green earned offensive honors after catching eight passes for 153 yards and a touchdown against Arizona State. Norwood had 10 tackles, two sacks and a partically blocked punt in an upset of Mississippi. Jones returned a punt 93 yards for a touchdown to open the fourth quarter in LSU's 30-26 win over Mississippi State. He also had a key pass deflection on the goal line on a late defensive stand. The offensive lineman of the week was Florida tackle Marcus Gilbert, while defensive line honors went to Georgia end Justin Houston. Alabama tailback Trent Richardson claimed freshman honors.

NEW MEXICO
Head coach Mike Locksley has been reprimanded for a fight involving an assistant coach, who told police Locksley struck him and split his lip. Athletics director Paul Krebs said at a news conference Monday that Locksley was issued a verbal reprimand with a follow up letter placed in his personnel file after the September 20 altercation. According to a police report, receivers coach J.B. Gerald said the fight occurred during a heated coaches meeting. Locksley became angry, grabbed Gerald by the collar and punched him as other coaches tried to intervene.

SOUTHERN CAL
Tailback Stafon Johnson had emergecy throat surgery Monday after a weightlifting accident. The senior who scored the No. 7 Trojans' go ahead touchdown against Ohio State two weeks ago was bench pressing when the bar slipped from his right hand and fell onto his throat. Johnson is the Trojans' second leading rusher with 157 yards, and he leads USC with five touchdowns.

TEXAS TECH
Tweeting is out of bounds for football players at Texas Tech. Coach Mike Leach said Monday he has banned his players from using Twitter after one of his linebackers noted the coach's tardiness to a team meeting in a tweet Sunday, one day after the Red Raiders lost 29-28 at No. 12 Houston. Leach said players don't need Twitter or Facebook. He called them "stupid" distractions.

HEISMAN HYPE
It's much too early to settle upon a Heisman Trophy favorite, but that doesn't mean we can't point out somebody who bears watching. And as much as it pains me to admit, Jimmy "Touchdown Jesus" Clausen of Notre Dame is off to an interesting start. In the past, he's been over- hyped and over-rated, but through four games this season, he has completed 65.8 percent of his passes, thrown only one interception and had 10 touchdown throws to his credit. So far, early favorite Tim Tebow's numbers are 64.7 percent, one interception and six touchdowns. Clausen also is fourth in the nation in passing efficiency (three spots ahead of Tebow) and has led his team to a 3-1 record, including a fourth quarter comeback against Purdue on Saturday. His big test will be October 17 when Notre Dame host Southern Cal. Then we'll see if he's still worth watching.

SOUTH CAROLINA
Neither of South Carolina's top two quarterbacks practiced much Monday, but coach Steve Spurrier expects them both to be available by this weekend's game against powerhouse South Carolina State. Starter Stephen Garcia is nursing bruised ribs suffered in last Thursday's win over Mississippi. Backup Reid McCollum has been sick the last several days. Spurrier says Aramis Hillary and Zac Brindise took most of the snaps at Monday's practice, but he expects to have Garcia and McCollum back taking most of the work. Garcia is the only quarterback on South Carolina's roster with significant playing time.

TENNESSEE
Increasing injuries haven't helped an already thin Tennessee football roster, but coach Lane Kiffin said Tuesday that he doesn't plan to soften the Volunteers' physical practices. "I think you have to take risks, and you have to stay with your philosophy, which is that we need to practice hard in order to play well." Most teams occur injuries before and during seasons, but few deal with double-digit offseason defections. The Vols did after their head coaching change. This week's matchup with Auburn should be an interesting one.

SOUTHERN CAL
A doctor says tailback Stafon Johnson is giving thumbs up signs and communicationg in writing to his mother and teammates after undergoing a seven hour surgery to repair a crushed neck and larynx. The senior was injured in a bench pressing accident Monday when a bar slipped from his hands. The doctors said Johnson may hot have survived if he did not have such a muscular physique. He is unlikely to return this season.

FLORIDA
Tim Tebow went through more post concussion tests yesterday, and this time, he had his coach tagging along. Coach Urban Meyer took several balance and memory tests with his star player because he was curious about the process. Tebow has not been allowed to read or watch television, and didn't attend practice Tuesday. Meyer said there is no timetable for getting Tebow back on the practice field. He also made it clear that Tebow could miss practice this week and next and still start the team's next game, at LSU on October 10th.

We are currently on Florida State as a pick from a futures wager made before the season started, and our two lead line wagers, Va. Tech -13 at Duke, and Penn State -4 at Illinois. We are also watching Hawaii very closely, because there is something about this line that does not add up, especially if you study the line history at certain books in Vegas. GL Clover.

Bd, two games I may play just before game time are California (smell outright win)
and Georgia at home against LSU.

Are you hearing anything on that USC/Cal game?

Interesting. Could use a little support here, clover: http://forums.eog.com/college-football-betting/your-heisman-rankings-247506.html

I'm just messing around. Glad to see him get a little recognition. Obviously it's still early and I believe Chase Daniel was the Heisman favorite at this point last year, but I do believe he deserves acknowledgment for his stellar play thus far. You are right about one thing: that USC game means everything in the world.

I like both of these plays as well--some great lines you got--and threw a little on Hawaii for tonight to keep me occupied while I'm studying.

I'm also curious as to what you think about the USC game. I was leaning towards SC but now hearing Clover on the other side, I may just lay off.

ALABAMA
Just when the flu appeared to disappear, it crept back into the football program. Several players and one coach have had issues this week with the bug. Starting right tackle Drew Davis is the key player of concern. He will play, but just don't know how effective.

In four games, quarterback Greg McElroy has broken school records for consecutive completions (14) and single game completion percentage (86.7). Overall, he's completed 63 of 93 attempts (67.7 percent) for seven touchdowns and one interception.

Hide the kids Lucy, Alabama lost a recruit to Auburn. Defensive end Craig Sanders, from Ariton High School (Ala) committed to Auburn on Wednesday night, AuburnSports reported. Sanders previously committed to Alabama, but de-committed yesterday before announcing Auburn as his new choice. Rivals ranks Sanders as a four star and the No. 7 recruit in Alabama. Sanders originally chose Alabama over Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Clemson and Florida State.

Dont'a Hightower, Bama's outstanding sophomore linebacker had successful knee surgery this week and all expect a full recovery. Hightower started last season as a true freshman and made the freshman All-America team.

AUBURN
Special teams coach Jay Boulware wouldn't tell the media last night who will return punts against Tennessee on Saturday. The Tigers are still trying to find a reliable returner after problems in each of the first four games. Six or seven players have been worked out this week trying to find someone who can handle this key special team job. You can bet Tennessee has seen this weakness on tape and will try to exploit it.

TENNESSEE
Running back Montario Hardesty says he will play against Auburn on Saturday despite having his knee drained early this week. The 6-foot, 215 pound senior has been limited in practice this week to give his knee a chance to heal. Defensive end Chris Walker has also been limited in practice because of a bad back. Tennessee is pretty banged up entering this key SEC game.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI
The school's all-time leading rusher and the highest ranked recruit in the program's history won't play tonight against UAB. Damion Fletcher, the Golden Eagles' senior running back who has 4,658 career rushing yards is out with a groin injury. Also, DeAndre Brown, one of the best young receivers in the country won't play because of a bad shoulder. Quarterback Austin Davis will be ask to take up the slack with the two best players out on offense.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

This is week 1 of two huge weeks in the SEC. LSU at Georgia and Auburn at Tennessee are the headliners. Two undefeateds on the road. Both undefeateds are dogs. If the linemakers are right, these should be two very close games. LSU is in a classic "look ahead" situation, hosting #1 Florida next week. The LSU-Georgia game should be a game of big plays, as neither team has demonstrated a lot of consistancy on offense. Auburn-Tennessee features more of a calssic offensive (Auburn) vs defensive (Tennesee) matchup.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

Bd, one of the first things I look at when trying to determine a good play is who the teams just played and who they play the following week. LSU is a top ranked team, yet playing as a dog to Georgia. You are right on noting that Florida is on deck. One of reasons I like the Dawgs in this one.

You may have noticed in my picks for the week I took Kentucky plus the points. Not that I think the Cats will beat Bama, it's because of the schedule. Bama opened the SEC last week against Arkansas (got to win that first one) now they have Kentucky with Ole Miss next, then South Carolina, Tennessee, LSU and Mississippi State before finishing up with that Cow College across the state. Bama may blow out Kentucky, but I'm looking for a good game, especially after Florida embarrassed them the first half last game.

Cal took it on the chin last week......look who they play this week.

Re: 2009 College Football Notebook

The USC-Cal game is not difficult to figure out. If USC can keep the ball in their hands instead of on the ground, and if they can get less than their usual 100+ yards worth of penalties, they have the talent to beat Cal. These two teams do nt exactly light up the scoreboard when they play each other. Look for both teams to try to control the game on the ground.
