The market is right most of the time.

Tom Brady is in the prime of his 11-year NFL career. The 33-year-old Brady, who recently signed a four-year contract extension for $72 million, is the highest-paid player in football and justifiably so.

A three-time Super Bowl champ, Brady has never looked better, leading NFL quarterbacks this season with a passer rating of 105.8. He has thrown 23 touchdown passes against only four interceptions.

Brady's recent form is even more impressive than his season-to-date numbers. He has thrown 11 touchdown strikes over the last four weeks and has not thrown an interception in the last six games.

For a player who was drafted in the sixth round (#199 overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft, the University of Michigan product has exceeded all expectations, progressing from a fourth-string quarterback - behind Drew Bledsoe, John Friesz and Michael Bishop - to undoubtedly the greatest quarterback in the game today.

Quarterbacks drafted ahead of Tom Brady in the 2000 NFL Draft include Chad Pennington, Giovanni Carmazzi, Chris Redman and Tee Martin, proving the market isn't right all the time and occasionally makes colossal mistakes.

POUTING PEYTON.....While Brady enjoys an MVP-caliber year, Peyton Manning is experiencing a subpar season. Manning has thrown 11 interceptions over the past three games with four of the 11 "picks" returned for touchdowns, leading directly to three straight losses for the 6-6 Indianapolis Colts.

Indy's 2010 regular-season winning percentage (.500) now matches Peyton's career playoff winning percentage (.500) after 18 postseason contests. The quarterback who is on pace to set career records in every major statistical passing category is only 9-9 in his franchise's most important games.

And here's Peyton Manning's biggest flaw: the best game-manager to ever quarterback a football game is among the worst at controlling his on-field emotions. Manning acts his poorest when his team needs him most, unraveling in tight situations like yesterday's four-interception day which resulted in an overtime loss against resurgent Dallas. Manning's agitated facial expressions and negative body language are signs of a weak leader and not the way to win friends and influence people.

NFL NOTES AND QUOTES.....The most important comments from NFL head coaches are not heard in the press conferences immediately following a Sunday game, but rather during the Tuesday press conference after the coaches have had a chance to review the all-important game film. To interpret a coach's raw reaction to a game, check out the post-game speeches in the locker room that are often shown on the NFL Network.

A BOOKMAKER'S VIEW.....Bob Scucci is the Nevada Director of Race and Sports Book Operations for Boyd Gaming. He serves as one of the most influential voices in the state's race and sports book industry.

Scucci recently relayed two of the biggest challenges to his job under today's current conditions.

"A few years ago, we had players who were betting $10,000 a game on every game on the board. Not anymore. Everyone seems to be betting less money. The $200 bettor is now betting $100, the $100 bettor is now betting $50, and so on...," said Scucci.

He continued, "Another challenge for bookmakers is the growing sophistication of the betting public. The winning players are sharper than ever before and the so-called squares are learning quickly."

Scucci's corporate approach of accounting for every dollar received and monitoring every dollar spent is in sharp contrast to Las Vegas bookies of the past, who were able to operate freely without much company control or corporate interference.

Bookmakers like Scotty Schettler and Jimmy Vaccaro, who were able to wheel-and-deal under a more relaxed atmosphere, are the most popular in the gambling fraternity, but Scucci represents today's corporate bookmakers, who are less popular among everyday gamblers, but follow orders, sing the company line and most importantly, maximize profits and respect rules for the company's shareholders.

MONDAY'S BEST BETS.....I like one college hoop game from today's short card: 517 NEVADA +6.5 over Houston. The Cougars have three victories this season by four points or fewer, including a narrow 3-point win over Division II Abilene Christian in an exhibition game. Nevada has lost five straight games after opening the season with a solid 81-66 home win over Montana. The Wolf Pack enjoy a drop in class after getting manhandled (but not giving up) against rival UNLV last Saturday night in Reno. In a game to be decided in the final minute, take the 6.5-point head start.

COMING FRIDAY.....A look at the key to the BCS Championship Game between Oregon and Auburn.

Re: My Monday blog

Manning is reminding me of Bret Favre, especially the gunslinger Favre who launches questionable tosses into tight coverage.

Re: My Monday blog

Manning's frustrations have always been a turnoff for me, but he's won a lot of games over the years. Check the tapes, he's always reacted with the same childish facial expressions when things have gone poorly. Thanks for the pick, and GL, JK!12io4j2w90

I'd like to note to the jury that you have criticized Peyton on a few occasions since your blog entries have become EOF folklore.
Please indicate to the court recorder that this should be bolded and in caps.
Your dislike of Manning is noted and hereby recorded.

Re: My Monday blog

Not speaking for JK, but maybe the root of my problem with Manning is that when I bet against him with Chicago in the SB, he beat me, and when I bet with him vs. New Orleans, he threw the pick 6 that lost the game. :LMAO

Re: My Monday blog

team injuries didnt make him throw those horrible horrible passes that have been intercepted the last 3 weeks.

I think some of what we are seeing is how important Clark is/was to their offense....some of those balls that Tamme missed Clark would have found a way to catch them....he was a perfect outlet and Manning could throw a piss-poor ball and Clark would find a way to reel it in - Manning looks totally frazzled without the outlet - that and the fact that Donald Brown has not turned out to be the replacement for Addai that he was brought in to be...

Re: My Monday blog

That being said some of those DB's haven't had easier interceptions since high school....

Re: My Monday blog

Good write-up about how tough things are in Vegas for the Bookmakers in Vegas. Two things led to this. First, all of the major hotels are basically owned by 4 or 5 conglomerates. MGM owns a bunch of hotels. Harrrah's ownes a buch of hotels. The days when hotels had sportsbooks independent of other hotels is a thing of the past. They days of getting different lines at Caesars, Bally's and the Flamingo are gone. Now the new kids on the block, especially the Wynn and the M Resort, do all kinds of little tricks to try and bring in players like varying the line by a half, to one point. Right now, the Wynn has Auburn at -2.5 -110. The M has Auburn -3.5 -110. The hope bieng that the early players who like Auburn will go to the Wynn to place their wagerss, and the early players who like Oregon will flock to the M.

Second, there is no doubt that the "high rollers" are getting smaller in numbers. There are two reasons for this. First, attrition. The old "wiseguys" and "cartels" are slowly fading out. Second, it is getting more and more difficult to find hotels that will take that kind of action. Hotel Casino and Sportsbook managers have to answer to corperate people now. Back in the day, the Hotel was in business to break even. The money was made in the Casino. That is not the case today. Howard Hughes started the demise of Las Vegas. It continues toeday. Back in the day, hotel casino's gave cigarettes and drinks away. Today, many do not give away free booze unless you play certain games or machines, and smoking is a taboo.

Nice read, thanks. For me I'm taking under in the NFL tonight, I think Jets will slow down NE on offense and slow themselves down when they have the ball. Wouldn't mind getting some RAS fades either to cash in on, that 40% he's hitting is doing me well right now, LOL!

Don't even compare P. Manning to Favre. Favre just throws balls up for grabs...a total disregard for safety. Manning is one of the smartest players to ever play the game. He's forcing plays out of having inferior personnel. His slump will pass - no pun intended - and he will live to win regularly again.

Re: My Monday blog

Yeah Favre is the alltime NFL INT leader for a reason. Manning's in a bad slump, Favre had a bad career as it pertains to having balls picked off. One knows how to protect the football, the other does not.

Sharp post. The tight end is the quarterback's security blanket. Injuries to star tight ends must be weighted properly from a gambling perspective. Lesson learned.

Manning is in need of a healthy running back, one to keep the LB's honest and two to dump a pass off to when the receivers are covered. Manning is far from done, the colts are a mess right now, too many injuries.

I hold a grudge because of Peyton's days at Tennessee and his inability to beat rival Florida.

Agree. If Favre can last until age 40, so can Manning.

Re: My Monday blog

Peyton Manning is the Greg Maddux of the NFL. Both are cerebral hurlers with pinpoint control who post dominant regular-season numbers with average to below-average postseason results (Maddux was 10-10 in the playoffs, Manning is 9-9). Only one title apiece for the pair of future Hall-of-Famers.

Ray Rice is a perfect fit in Baltimore. Ray Lewis is teaching Rice the way to play the game.

He may have sacked Anderson on the sidelines.

I dont like the way Boyd Gaming treated Don Williams the former sportsbook manager at the Orleans, guy put in 25 yrs in Vegas as director and Boyd suits put in a witch hunt to get rid of his grandfatherd salary from when Gaughan hired him. Scucci is being a Corporate YES MAN for half the salary.

Nobody in life will ever be able to read defenses like Peyton period... a lot of people don't realize how banged up the Colts are, put Brady on the Colts and he would be on the bench....

Don't mean to BUTCHER your thread, but how many times did Brady change a play at the line of scrimage last night? give Peyton the time that Brady had last night to throw you would have seen the same results... not even close who can read DEFENSES the best, if anyone thinks any different they are CLUELESS......
