I'd write stories if I thought anybody was going to read them, but nobody bothers checking the front page. We come here for the forums.

Re: the EOG home page is so full of old news and other junk

I have a blog that I will not be linking to as I don't usually write about sports picks or anything, but here's one of my posts from last summer. Most of it will be old news and arguments for the people here, but if you're bored bernie/Tegs, here's 3 minutes of reading for ya:

Back in 2006, on the very last day before the US Congress adjourned for November elections, a corrupt Republican Senator by the name of Bill Frist fast-tracked some legislation trying to outlaw internet gambling at the midnight hour before his party got swept out of power. He was successful, and UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act) was born. The legislation was attached to a non-controversial "must pass" bill that, as predicted, passed easily. Many legislators later said they never even had an opportunity to read the UIGEA component.

First, shame on any legislator that votes in favor of a law that they didn't read.

More importantly though...nearly five years later, and internet gaming is almost dead. This greatly saddens me.

For years, online poker and online sportsbooks took in millions of dollars from Americans, setting up table games and offering odds on everything from NFL football to Australian soccer. Some Americans participated as businessmen, grinding away a living and a steady income just like Knish in Rounders. Many college tuitions, wedding rings, and car payments have been paid for in the last decade by online winnings. Others just do it for the fun.

Many people frown on gamblers, for reasons I'll either never understand or agree with. You see, I'm of the mindset that life is a gamble.

When you get in your car and drive across town, you're betting both your life and your car that you'll make it. You're a heavy favorite to win; the odds are clearly in your favor that you'll make it, but it's a risk you're willing to take.

When a hopeful entrepreneur takes his life savings and goes to the bank for a loan hoping to start his own business, he's gambling on himself. Those are the bravest kind of gamblers, as they're risking everything on a bet where they don't even know what their payout will be.

When you don't brush your teeth, fail to use birth control, try a new spicy food...you're gambling. It may not feel like gambling because there aren't pretty lights flashing around you or you don't have to visit an ATM beforehand, but gambling is placing something of value at risk through something that results in an unknown future outcome, hopefully resulting in a positive outcome but potentially leading to a negative outcome. The driver makes it across town, the entrepreneur creates Google, the lazy non-tooth-brusher develops no cavities and gets to fall asleep on the couch without getting up, the promiscuous enjoys sex without getting pregnant, and the adventurer out looking for a new restaurant finds their new favorite dish. Orrrr...a car wreck, the business fails, cavities galore, Junior is born, or you spend the following day on the toilet. You win some, you lose some. Ultimately though, you don't really know what's going to happen. That's life. That's decision-making. That's gambling.

The point of these multiple analogies? We're all gamblers, whether we realize or want to admit it or not.

Most of the country hasn't come to terms with this fact. It should.

Once it has, we might have a chance at getting UIGEA thrown out the window. It needs to get thrown out of the window, blown up on its way out, and buried in a grave so deep the thought of recreating anything of its kind again never enters our national conscience. It truthfully is a law without much bite. If a good lawyer found a way to combat it in the Supreme Court it would certainly be found to be lacking. But for now, the Department of Justice has used this law to take out prominent websites used by millions of Americans. PokerStars, FullTilt, and Bookmaker.com have all fallen victim to the tentacles of UIGEA. Millions of Americans used these sites, then got stuck in a holding pattern hoping just to get their money back out of them.

How have we allowed this to happen? Why has there not been more of a revolt? Political apathy? A sense that speaking up in protest would just put a target on one's back in the eyes of the Feds? No centralized voice for protest? All of the above, most likely.

Congressman Barney Frank (New Jersey) has fought back for the gamblers. Congressman Joe Barton (Texas) is fighting back on behalf of poker. Ron Paul seems like the prominent type that we could convince to fight back. There are millions of people ready to fight back, and yet it isn't happening in earnest yet.

If you've ever made a bet online, wanted to make a bet online, wish to make a bet online in the future, or simply recognize the lack of Constitutionality that such a prohibition is based on, may I please encourage you to write your legislators and encourage them to explicitly legalize online gambling. If I want to play a .05/.10 game of Texas Hold 'Em on a snowy night, why should I not be able to? If I want to bet $50 on the Packers playing the Steelers, why should I not be able to? I can certainly go play the government-run lottery any time I please and it has far worse odds than any wagers I'd choose to make online.

This government has a lot of things wrong with it. A lot of things. For many, online gambling is the least of their concerns, and rightfully so.

But some of us enjoy the challenge. Some of us enjoy the entertainment. Some of us just enjoy the thrill, and some enjoy the extra money that comes in from grinding away. Whatever the reason, there are millions of us, and we're watching the "Land of the Free" become the "Land of the Restricted by the US Department of Justice". And that should be scary for a multitude of reasons to more people than just those of us who like poker or blackjack or the Patriots -7. It doesn't take long to write an e-mail, and dedicating the five minutes (or less) that doing so takes in place of watching five more minutes of Debt Ceiling coverage, or surfing facebook, or sleeping, would be truly appreciated.

Please write your legislators and tell them to support online gambling. It probably won't help, but it's always fun to bet on the underdog and hope for a miracle.

JK should post his blog on the front page imo. Good eye catcher and if any moron can do it, no tech issue for jk to hang that puppy up.

Won't happen as organized crime and Nevada are both lined up against it.

Thanks for the idea, AA.

I'm learning WordPress now.

I plan to post a daily blog on our front page beginning January 1.

Postscript: good article, Weinke.
