HBO has canceled the series Luck

HBO has ended its series Luck in the wake of three deaths of horses during filming.

Here's the statement from HBO:

"It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series LUCK.
Safety is always of paramount concern. We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures. While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won't in the future. Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision.
We are immensely proud of this series, the writing, the acting, the filmmaking, the celebration of the culture of horses, and everyone involved in its creation."

when western movies were the craze----many horses were injured or killed----laws were passed to protect horses----movie producers went to mexico to film----horses are really fragile animals.

Good thing I don't like horses...

Weird thing was, I was just starting to get into the show.

I really thought it was a good show. How the hell are we going to know how it ends? They could get away from the horse racing and get to how they get casino action instead!

I'm kinda with you here even though I love horse racing and have worked on the front side for many years.

Can't put my finger on why I wasn't overyly impressed though. I basically think its because I was hoping to be totally engulfed in the show like I was for the Sopranos and the Wire. Although I guess thats not really fair comparing it to 2 of the best shows ever made, but HBO has already set the bar high.

The problem is the arc of the characters and storylines don't end with the first season. Look at a season as a chapter. You'll get a chapter ending, however, the series will stop at a chapter and therefore many of Milch's storylines will never be able to deliver the payoff. The luxury and beauty of an HBO as opposed to a network is you already know that you've been picked up for the next season and can actually arc out a season or for many visionaries an entire series. Luck was nearly half way through shooting season two, those episodes may appear on a DVD release, but it will never tie-up those storylines that were to build off of season one. It's been sometime since a series got cancelled so abruptly and had nothing to do with ratings or a rogue star.

Luck reminds me of a talented three-year-old who exhibits the promise of greatness, yet gets injured before he can deliver on those building expectations.

the show seemed tailor-made for me and i wasn't a fan. i watched more out of obligation than for enjoyment. not sorry to see it euthanized, though i hate the fact the PETA folks got their way.

Loved your review, especially the spot-on analogy in the final sentence.

Re: HBO has canceled the series Luck

Within the 1st episode of Sopranos, Oz, The Wire, Entourage, Boardwalk Empire, Eastbound & Down. I knew they would be great. Luck is just too boring. I liked the idea, but in the 1st episode we saw 4 guys win 2 mil, which was the climax of the show to this point.

I'm actually shocked HBO put this shit on TV, and canceled How To Make It In America

FYI... The days of Santa Anita cancelling due to rain should be over. The year they cancelled everytime it sprinkled Santa Anita still had the synthetic track that had a draining problem.

Today, Santa Anita has returned to dirt and supposedly corrected the draining problem.

Never say never, but the advise should be; handicapp for a sloppy track and off the turf.

Thanks JK. This is also a prime example in this day and age of social media that if you don't get out ahead of a story; perception becomes reality and eventually will be skewed to the point that exagerated, unfounded rumors will be remembered as the truth.
