Deadliest Catch

I've been watching this show called The Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel. To do Alaskan King Crab fishing on the Bering Sea, you gotta be nuts!!! You may make a few fast bucks, but you could be swept overboard in the process. You gotta be insane to go out there and do that.

SOMETIMES THESE DECKHAND GUYS DONT MAKE MUCH WHEN THE HAUL IS LIGHT.. WHEN THEY GET THE BIG HAULS THEY MAKE TONS OF $$$ ..TAKES ALOT OF GUTS TO DO THAT JOB..EVERYTIME THEY GO OUT ON THAT BOAT THEY MAY NOT COME BACK.. ITS HAPPEN BEFORE SAD BUT TRUE..

Talk about gambling with your life, watched many of the episodes also, no guarantee of big money either.... like a GET THE KINGCRABS video game but with only one life.

yeah i watched the show quite a bit last season too.......The money can be great, but those guys are nuts!! Yeah i think 1 or 2 boats went down on last years show because the boats got to top heavy due to ice.....No way you could get me to do that job because you don't know if you will be walking away with k's or pennies....

At the end of last season they were saying that it was the last year for "derby fishing" meaning every boat for themself. Starting the next season it was going to be that everyone shares the total haul from all the boats. Less need to take risks. The true fisherman didn't like this at all.

i could understand that wholeheartedly..........that's not right.....I mean it sucks for the ones that are not hitting it big but they all knew that's the risk you take coming into the thing.......not fair to take aways from the ones really raking it......

That community share fishing doesn't sound fair at all to me. The different crab fishing boats vary in size and the amount of crab traps they carry. Some of those boats cost more to run than others. I can see why the true fishermen are pissed. Socialism.

The money isn't really that good. For the amountof time and work you put into it it actually sucks.

Basically they work 3-5 days non stop on the water, and quite a bit of time before they even leave the dock (which isn't paid for, but part of the overall job description).

Most of the deckhands make 750-1500. A VERY good boat they might get 2 grand. Sounds good for a few days work, but not when you figure the risks involved, and the other bullshit that accompanies it.

I grew up lobstering and fishing in general, trust me it isn't as romantic as they make it out to be. I went out of DutchHarbor in Alaska a couple winters, ground fishing mostly. A lot easier, and a lot more consistant. That crabbing shit up thereis for the birds. The only ones thatmake any money are the guys thatown the boats. They don't get to pay ten of thousands of dollarsfor liscences, and multi millions on (some) of those boats, by paying the drug addict, drunken deck hands any kind of real money.

But a typical spin job done by a supposedly "reality" TV show. The only real dangerous part of the job is when all the traps/pots are loaded on the deck and the boat is top heavy, and even then they have to be going with a following sea to make it really bad.

Anyone that gets fouled up in the gear or falls overboard during a haul back shouldn't be on the boat in the first place IMO.

If it was so great a job andthe money was so awesome why do they have so many "greenhorns" as The Discovery Channel as monickered them? Because the money isn't that good, and anyone with half a brain and the ability to get on with a real outfit wouldn't need to be doing it.

they make alot more than that wantitall4moi..........

Every October, 250 boats gathering in Alaska?s Dutch Harbour, waiting for a radio announcement that can seal their fate. These are crab fishermen, and they?re chasing one of the ocean?s great prizes ? the king crab, one of North America?s most popular delicacies. The rewards for a successful season can be immense. In 2004, the Alaskan boats caught 15.4 million pounds (6.8 million kilograms) of crab worth US$65.8 million. On a really successful boat, one fisherman might earn as much as US$100,000 for only five days work................

to any regular ole working guy to make that much or even around that much in just 5 days is a damn good day..

According to the final show for last season, the pay ranged from about $10,000 per deckhand on The Billikan to about $27,000 per deckhand on the Northwestern for 5 days work out at sea. $20,000 seemed to be what most of the deckhands on the other boats were approximately making. That kind of money isn't worth risking my life over. Takes a certain breed to be one of those deckhands.

Last year was a record year, good weather, lots of crab, and a longer season than normal and even then I wouldn't believe those numbers. Just because a "reality" TV show says something doesn't make ity so. I suppose if Discovery Channel did a show on Stu feiner and they said he hit 70% of his plays and made 50K in a a couple days you would all believe that too?

People believe anything others tell them. I see it all the time on these forums. You tell enough lies or sugarcoat the bullshit long enough everything becomes believeable I guess.

I was IN Dutch Harbor for two seasons, I SAW with MY OWN eyes, and heard with MY OWN ears what these guys dio and make. Just because some TV show comes inand dramatizes it and glorifies it doesn't make it so. Just like with Poker. These clowns they show on TV are the biggest bunch of degenerate drug addicted alcoholic losers to walk the earth, but ESPN, The Travel Channel, or whomever is carrying a poker show make them out to be heroes. And people eat it up. If they knew them a few years ago, or even saw them around town today that opinion might not be as generous.

I don't know verything, but I knw what I see. Like I said, I am not the type to believe everything people tell me, and really only half of what I DO see.

For all you math wizes out here run these numbers when you want to figure out what the deck hands make. Deck hands will make .5-1% depending on experience. If they are related or can cook or have some other secondary skill (mechanic, elctrician, refrigeration etc) they might get another .5-1% tacked onto to that. So at best a deck hand is looking at 2% AFTER the boat take. out 60-65% AND the expenses are taken out. So say a boat gets 100K lbs of crabs @ roughly $8-$9 a lb. That is $800-$900K. Take out 60% (we'll lowball it) That leaves 320-360. Expense we will round off to an even 50K (that is lowball too)So that leaves 270-310 to get their % out of. That is between 1350 and 6200 depending on percentage and other factors.

I am sure you will all be glued to the TV tonight so watch the numbers, it doesn't take a lot of math skill to figure it out. What people foregt is just how big a cut the boats take out BEFORE ANYONE gets paid.

I should throw an edit in here. The price of crabs varies also. Not sure which season they are showing. But Opilios are generally only 5-6(maybe 6-7 a lb) while the Kings are the ones that are 8-9 a lb. So plug in those prices for whatever season they are in.

Also I wouldn't think that if you couldn't bet on which boat has the biggest catch most people on this forum would even watch it.
