Porter Moser to replace Lon Kruger at OU

It will be tougher for Porter Moser to convince high-level D-1 players to sacrifice individual accomplishments for team achievements.

At Loyola-Chicago, Moser convinced lightly-recruited players to buy into the team concept.

Now comes the challange of getting players to listen when they have one eye on the draft.

Trae Young had the green light from Lon Kruger and why not?

Young was not quite a generational talent but close.

A poor man's Steph Curry, maybe.

Though calling Trae Young a "poor man" would be a mistake.

He's likely to make more than $300 million in his NBA career.

Harder, yes. But it can be done. Mark Few, Tony Bennett, Greg Gard all recruit into a team first system. If that system is successful, the players will keep coming.

Moser a Rick Majerus disciple can definitely coach, will see if he can recruit.
His style of play could be an issue for 5 star guys.

Who would have predicted 5 years ago, that two former head coaches of Arkansas-Little Rock now would be head coaches of the Red River Rivalry?

Chris Beard vs Porter Moser.

Ya, that's crazy, and to think Beard was the coach at unlv for about 10 days.

How much more was OK able to pay Moser than LU?

Porter Moser was making about $1.1 million per year under his contract at Loyola.

Loyola reportedly offered to double his salary to $2.2 million per year and guarantee a 10-year deal.

Oklahoma reportedly offered Moser a six-year deal worth about $15 million.

Lon Kruger was slated to make a little more than $3 million per year if he continued coaching the Sooners.

That's funny, legendary coach Lon Kruger. Is he really that legendary? Good coach, but is he getting into the hall of fame?

Funny no fanfare about the younger Kruger taking UNLV job. I wonder if daddy will help now?

A basketball program is in trouble when the results of the past decade are subpar while competing in a conference that is falling off the national map.

It really hurt the Mountain West when TCU, BYU and Utah left for greener pastures.

Back in the day, unlv basketball was the only game in town.
Vegas was much smaller and the locals embraced the team.It was their team.
Now with the knights and raiders unlv hoops is an afterthought.
Tark was a rock star back then and unlv basketball was the hottest ticket in town.
Those days are long gone.

No doubt the day BYU left was a huge blow for basketball competitiveness and football money. Utah wasn't that big a deal at the time but yeah certainly could have used that program to keep football relevant. Perhaps that's the biggest problem that it's a terrible football conference now outside of Boise who might have been better off following BYU to the independent route. Football still gets the bulk of the money so what a mess it is.

I think a super merger with the WCC on basketball would solve some problems, kicking out a handful of irrelevant teams. Let the Catholic schools minus Gonzaga have their own show, get back the BYU rivalries and add the power of the Zags and it may be reborn.

It is similar to DePaul in the late 70's-mid-80's. They owned Chicago, even had most every game on WGN TV. Once the Bulls and Blackhawks got good, Bears won a SB, Cubs and Sox made a couple of playoffs, DePaul was an afterthought.

Basically Loyola took their spot today. That program has been so bad so long but I remember back to the Mark Aguirre days, such a big force then.

They have the 2nd best winning percentage in tourney games after Duke. I think they are 16-6. They even had a run in the mid-late 80's with Alfredrick Hughes. The difference with Loyola is DePaul got big name recruits in their heyday.

God bless the days of Alfredrick Hughes and Wayne Sappleton and Gene Sullivan (remember him?).

Loved to bet Rambler games and attend the action at tiny Alumni Gym.

Chris Beard better wear a bullet proof vest next time he's in Lubbock. He left his hometown high and
dry. So many promises only to turn down a extension or give admin a opportunity to counter Texas
offer.

Let's not forget he left UNLV standing at the alter too.

Gonilla bread was a big sponsor of Loyola hoops for years. I think they had games on WGN radio for some time also.

Forgot about Wayne Sappleton, very good player.

DePaul had some pro's back then, Strickland, Aguirre, Cummings. Anyone remember Teddy Grubbs?

Teddy was sick in the head.

All-American out of King High School in Chicago.

He could play, but he had issues.

Personal and psychiatric issues.

Checking his whereabouts now.

Why did the best players in the Public League--one of the richest high school basketball recruiting areas in the country--stop going to DePaul?

The easiest answer is Teddy Grubbs. He's the high school All-American out of King who suffered from personal and psychological problems after his freshman year (1979-80), and eventually dropped out of DePaul

After that, King's Landon Cox and several other coaches vowed to never again send their top players to DePaul.

"Efrem Winters (who played at Illinois) was in my house when he told Joey he wasn't going to DePaul because of what they did to Teddy," Cox said. "Ray Meyer made a personal visit for Jamie Brandon, but Jamie wanted to go to Illinois. Marcus Liberty, he just didn't like Joey. And Rashard, he didn't want to stay in Chicago."

According to former DePaul assistant coach Robert Collins, a onetime Public League coach, the school was unfairly blamed for Grubbs' problems.

Grubbs was convicted of lewd fondling and simple battery of a woman on a Chicago Transit Authority train in October of 1983 and was on probation for one year.

He was charged with public indecency in June of 1986 and placed on conditional discharge for one year.

Teddy Grubbs and Terry Cummings were battling for playing time at DePaul.

Once Cummings established himself as a star college player, Grubbs was reduced to coming off the bench.

He could not handle the demotion.

Hughes was a bust as Spurs #1. He bought a Corvette immediately with his signing bonus. First time out on a Texas highway he gets pulled over for going 105 in 60 mile zone. He tells the patrolman...."sorry officer, but when you're young and rich you can't drive 60"

Haha.

Never heard that story.

Interestingly, a Chicago-area college player who had a much better NBA career than Hughes was drafted in the second round by the Spurs.

His name was Tyrone Corbin of DePaul.

Hughes went 14th overall and Corbin went #35 overall in the 1985 NBA Draft.

Both men are 58 years old today.

Corbin is currently an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic.

He came in the same year as Cummings. That was a hell of a team that lost to Indiana St in the semis. Grubbs had a lot of personal problems after leaving DePaul.

Yes.

And because DePaul was perceived to mistreat Teddy Grubbs during a hard time in his life, the Blue Demons were criticized by coaches in the Public League.

Ray Meyer and Joey Meyer were no longer able to recruit Chicago high schools like they once did in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

Thats right, and they haven't got a Public League player that really made a difference since. Now if they "played ball" like others, they could have some of those recruits.

Hard to believe with that pipeline and being the premier team in Chicago all those years with just Ray Meyer coaching they only made two final fours, none during the three years they were a one seed.
