2021-2022 NHL Thread

It was fun getting the hockey discussion together in the bubble and the last shortened season which proved profitable on both fronts. Now its a long marathon with a long break in Feb 2022 for the Winter Olympics. I encourage people to have various outs with especially access to 60 minute Regulation Lines(NO OT included). We all appreciate everyone's information, opinions and contributions to attempt to make the thread fun and profitable. I typically don't do these but liked the numbers so jumped on.

Season Point Totals

I like both season plays there. Lightning especially, you just know they are going to loaf it through after how they did it last year. Also tough on them because they lose a lot of players to the Olympics so they won't be as fresh late in the season as many opponents and might use that stretch to rest up even if it means a 3rd or 4th place finish.

I'm on VGK -1.5 tonight and will bet against the Kraken for awhile. I don't get a good vibe with them right now, I think they are going to prove to be more like a traditional expansion team in that they are going to hope their quality goalie can cover up for a lot of weakness. Also I think this Covid list for them feels like they are stashing players in the hopes that they can waive some guys without losing them. Also the arena fiasco having to open with so many road games this could be a bad road trip to start the season with the team finally getting traction only after they play a home game.

They still doing Center Ice? I thought it all switched over to ESPN+ ?

they have both... espn+ is solid play for the price. Disney going into sports books. Expect the price going up on ESPN+ .. the CEO said it will be a major player in sports real soon. It will heat up in 2022 when amazon gets thursday night..NFL ..it will be found nowhere else..

Amazon's pricing will get interesting then. Have had Prime forever but never watched a sporting event on it. I don't really get why they would want to tie sports in with it, they'd be better off buying some streaming network and putting their sports content on it.

I'm not a big hockey guy, but if the Panthers can get consistent play in goal, they're a dangerous team

They are getting plenty of respect in the betting markets, but yeah the hole in net has just gotten bigger unless Bob somehow figures things out.

At this point I'm not counting on Bob, I'm done with him, I'm hoping Spencer Knight plays well enough to become their number one goalie, he played very well last year in limited action, if he's the real deal in net, I like this team

The need for a WNHL, like WNBA. A lingerie league ;

The need for a WNHL, like WNBA. A lingerie league ;

Women's hockey is an enigma. Its actually pretty good quality now with so many girls playing growing up and as the men's game becomes a lot less physical the blatant difference of no real checking becomes less of an issue. But therein is the problem, to fill seats and keep people amped during the regular season the NHL needs the physical side along with the occasional fight or the fans are not as engaged.

Hopefully they keep sleepwalking in game 1 tonight down 2-0 in the 2nd, agree with what you said WB. I like the Canucks acquisitions and the perception is lukewarm on them in general. I think there's some value on them in a weak division.

Yeah its annoying they only show about half the games, with blackouts of course. Also if you have FanDuel you can stream some games and they are sometimes games ESPN+ doesn't have. Still sportsbook streaming is lousy quality and smaller screen, I ended up using one of the not so legal streaming sites and got a much better feed on the computer.

Been working a bunch so can't watch a lot, anything stand out early to anyone?

Missed out on a good one early on Columbus dedicating the openers to their fallen goalie, Elvis M. saying it was the most important game of his life, 8-2 final.

Would anticipate good games today from the Hurricanes and perhaps the Blues that got outplayed in the playoffs against Coloado.

I'm taking a shot with the Jets tonight 60 minute regulation line -137 pinnacle 1 unit

Huge Wings fan here so praying they hang on to their lead late here, but the Canucks could be a sneaky team this year. Especially in the weak(er) Pacific, won't surprise me if they emerge as a contender in the division. Ton of young talent.

They were lucky to catch Vancouver on the 2nd of a b2b and 3rd game in 4 nights I believe. A win is a win. Wings will be fun to watch this year and one more year away from contending from a bottom playoff bid.

Jets with a nice stinker after being up 2-0

Wings definitely better this year bit still that's a weak lineup backed by meh goalies. I can see another year with some long losing streaks, but maybe they will at least be more competitive

Goaltending will be one of the strengths for the Red Wings, not a weakness. Don't let one game cloud the vision. Yzerman stole this Nedeljkovic kid from the Hurricanes because they were in a bind with the cap. Everyone in the know will say that. And Greiss is one of the better well-traveled backups. It's their defense that's weak. And he won't see the big leagues this season more than likely, but they traded up and drafted a giant in goal in the first round this year who has all the tools to be Dryden-like for years to come. In 2 years we'll be talking about this team like they refer to Carolina and Florida. Mark my words. Yzerman is building this team as he did in Tampa years ago. He's a better team builder than he was on the ice with skates on. Been following this team for 40+ years. This is the 2nd rebuild I've been along for the ride with this team. This one will be better than the last and the last one had no salary cap to deal with. The foundation is almost in place. Their cap situation is miles better than any team in the league right now. The next couple of years will be teaching the young talent they have now how to win, and pick-pocketing desperate GMs in the league of their poorly cap-managed rosters throughout the next 2 seasons.

And I hope to be more active in this thread this year as I have in past years around here. The juices are starting to flow again.

I agree with the future assessment, but you got to get to the future with this team first. I like the long term value of their goalies, but Greiss is mostly done being effective. Can be a 15-20 game backup at this point of his career, but he's never been consistently that good and his frame is too small to overcome not being elite in something else. The fact that he's probably a 50/50 starter is not good news. And I'm remarking on the state of the team NOW. Not in 2 years, we can't bet on those games yet. This is by analytics views the 2nd or 3rd worse lineup. Maybe by the end of the year if the young guys figure some stuff out and they supplement it with youth it can be a little better than that. Once the excitement and juices of the start of the season wear off and the quality teams get past their usual slow starts I can see this team being a dead dog a lot of nights because there will be plenty of games they just can't compete in.

Detroit’s biggest problem by far the past two seasons has been their failure to score goals.
This is elephant in the room. They won’t make the playoffs until they start scoring more goals.

Sorry don't mean to turn this into a Wings thread haha - The Yzerplan is in full effect. Bad contracts are gone. I've never loved Larkin but think he's primed to take a next small step, with more talent surrounding him. But most importantly, what gets me pumped is what's happening in their farm system. They are so stacked...may still take a few years, but impossible for me to see another team in the entire NHL with as much talent and assets developing.

Nedeljkovic was a steal and FINALLY we can get excited about having someone competent between the pipes as we haven't over the last several years. Looking up and down their roster and seeing all the European blood, we are looking at the same structure of how those championships were born.

Last playoff appearance was 2016 which is just ridiculous. Team is on its way back to where they should be....

Pretty much a non-factor when your team is trying not to win. Winning was not a priority. And it may not even be this year as well. And I'm not saying upper management told the coaching staff not to win. But the priority is developing the young player's going forward. It's been a long-standing Wings tradition to have older, previous Cup winners on the bottom of the roster to instill in the younger players from a veteran standpoint exactly what it's going to take to win at this level. And the reason players like Draper, Malty, and Cleary were on the rosters when a younger, cheaper player would have been a better option from a fan's point of view growing and getting valuable minutes on the job. Players like Leddy were brought in to groom Mo Seider for the future. Not because he was the team's best option to win now. Another top 10 draft choice is much more important than the Wings putting pucks in the net during a rebuild. You're not looking at the situation the same way upper management is. Or you would understand this. Theirs no elephant in the room.

Thank Ken Holland for that.

This guy gets it. Though most every farm system rating I've seen in the last season and a half has them in the middle of the pack, In the 10-15 range. But we both know Yzerman is the difference. Every website that ranks these farm systems has the Kings more stacked than any other team. And Winky won't like to hear this but young talent isn't all that's needed. Scotty Bowman wouldn't hesitate to trade away any prized prospect on the team on ANY team he ever was a part of and he was the most successful coach/team builder in the history of ANY sport. Not just hockey. Dave Dombrowski was the same way. I remember him trading away what everyone agreed was more than likely the best prospect in all of baseball in Camrin Maybin and the tall lefty Anderson. [I forget his first name now] the no.1 overall drafted pitcher and packaged them with some high draft picks for Cabrara. Miggy didn't get us a ring, but 2 World Series appearances and the 2 prized rookies both amounted to nothing. Rob Blake won a cup with the Avs but not as a GM while Stevie has multiple Cups as both a player and wasn't around for the cup wins in Tampa, but was the architect of what they are today. The 2 times back to back Cup-winning Lightning and the favorite to make it 3.

I listened to the apology he made through the players association and just laughed. Sounded to me like complete bullshit after getting caught. Saying all the right things. Wouldn't surprise me to learn he never even wrote it.

"I would like to apologize to my teammates, the San Jose Sharks organization, and all Sharks fans for violating the NHL COVID protocols," said Kane in a statement released by the NHLPA. "I made a mistake, one I sincerely regret and take responsibility for. During my suspension, I will continue to participate in counseling to help me make better decisions in the future. When my suspension is over, I plan to return to the ice with great effort, determination, and love for the game of hockey."

This is his 6th suspension since entering the league.
