The Panthers led in the series for a total of 255 minutes, that's the most minutes any team has led in any finals ever

I was there at Elbo Room today for the madness. Fun but I’m getting too old for all these south Florida celebrations.
You gotta enjoy these moments when they come, there are fan bases in sports that never get to celebrate their team winning a championship

Florida's 1st 3 Lines have no Drop Off in Talent.

The 4th Line would Come off the Bench Like a Starving Dog, Chasing Food.

Bennett , Reinhardt, Marchand........I Think those 3 All play on Different Lines.

Don't Know what players are on Expiring

Contracts , accept for Marchand.

This Panthers team was incredible, hats off to them as they OWNED this Oilers team the last two years. I did read an interesting comment somewhere...something like 3 of the last 4 or 5 cup winners had a 'significant' salary player on IR leading up/going into the playoffs which allowed them to add a significant player to their roster to start the quest. This year it was Seth Jones, but I don't know how true and the other players added in previous years.

I don't know if this is what you mean, but Tkachuk got injured in the four Nations Cup and missed something like the last 20 games of the season before returning in the playoffs. Also, Aaron Ekblad was suspended for 20 games and missed the first two playoff games against Tampa. I don't know if it was related to those guys being out, but the Panthers added Seth Jones and Brad Marchand at the deadline, and both of them contributed big time in helping win the Cup

I don't know the rules enough to understand how players on LTIR exactly allow the cap to open up and allow these players (often rental) to get added. I do think Mark Stone was another case in Vegas' recent cup but again don't know if his absence on IR allowed them to bring in anyone for their run.

After the NHL trade deadline, teams can't circumvent the salary cap in a way that allows them to spend more than the cap allows during the regular season. However, they can use Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) to create cap space. While LTIR doesn't remove a player's cap hit, it allows a team to exceed the cap by the amount of the injured player's cap hit, essentially providing cap relief to acquire other players. Additionally, teams can manage their cap space by making trades that involve salary retention or by utilizing buyouts, though these have their own implications.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

1. Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR):
  • Teams can place players on LTIR if they are expected to miss at least 10 games and 24 days due to injury.

  • While on LTIR, a player's cap hit doesn't count against the team's salary cap, but the team can exceed the cap by the amount of the injured player's cap hit, creating LTIR pool, according to Puckpedia.

  • This allows teams to acquire players or make trades to improve their roster without being immediately penalized for exceeding the cap.

  • Crucially, a player on LTIR can be activated after the regular season ends, and there are no salary cap restrictions during the playoffs.
2. Salary Retention in Trades:
  • Teams can trade players with salary retention, meaning they retain a percentage of the player's salary (up to 50%).
  • This allows teams to acquire players at a lower cap hit, freeing up space for other moves.
  • Salary retention can be used in combination with LTIR to maximize a team's flexibility.
3. Buyouts:
  • Teams can buyout contracts, which means they terminate the contract but still owe the player a portion of the remaining salary.
  • Buyouts can free up cap space, but they also create a cap hit in future seasons.
  • Buyouts are often used strategically to create cap space for specific players or to manage long-term cap obligations.
4. Other Considerations:
  • While teams can be under the cap, there is no penalty for being under the cap during the regular season, according to a Reddit thread.

  • Teams cannot manipulate the system by placing players on LTIR and then activating them for the playoffs if the player was not actually injured, according to a Facebook post.

  • The NHL is aware of these potential loopholes and may implement changes to address them in the future.

Moves like this will soon be addressed at the Board of Directors meetings. Teams have figured out how to bend the rules in their favor to give them an unfair advantage.

It's been going on for a few years now, but when teams do it AND win the Cup, that's going to speed up the process for the league to address it.

When teams have big-money players stashed on long-term injured reserve for significant portions of the season, it’s become commonplace for the NHL to direct additional scrutiny toward their medical records to ensure they’re not circumventing the salary cap. It’s become a hot-button issue in recent years with star players missing most or all of the regular season with injuries, only to return at the beginning of the playoffs when the upper limit is no longer in effect.

Appreciate the posts Bushay, I'm not gonna pretend like I totally understand it all, but it is interesting

In other words business as usual. 😁

Just kidding, congrats.

I will say right now though they won't get that 3rd in a row.

Tampa didn't get it, Chiefs didn't get it, Panthers won't get it.

These titles equate to long seasons, much longer than the rest.

Not the only reason they fail but a good place to start.

panthers were good during the season, but it seemed like they were playing possum all along. Great coaching and management.

IMO there are only two things that can prevent them from going back to the finals a fourth straight time.

First, age might catch up to Bob, he'll be 38 at the start of next season, as we all know father time is undefeated and at some point Bob will eventually slow down. That said, the guy keeps himself in great shape, and according to his teammates he's the hardest worker on the team. They just won the Cup without having home ice in any series, so the team knows the regular season isn't as important to them as it is to other teams, I'm sure the coaching staff will give Bob plenty of rest during the season getting ready for the postseason grind.

Second, the wear and tear of going to three straight finals might catch up to them physically and mentally. In reaching three straight finals they've basically played four seasons worth of games in just three years, that's a lot of hockey, and there's a chance they just hit a collective wall at some point in the playoffs. I remember when the Heat went to their fourth straight finals, LeBron made a comment that during the series against the Spurs, the team just hit a wall, playing so many games during that four year span they had nothing left physically and mentally, and the Spurs beat them rather easily. The Bills went to four straight SB's, and I remember an interview with Bills receiver Don Beebe, he said at halftime of their fourth SB against Dallas, he recalled looking at his teammates in the locker room, and he could tell by their body language they had nothing left in their tank, he said the emotional, physical, and mental toll hit them at halftime, they got blown out in the second half. I've always remembered the comments made by LeBron and Beebe about what a toll going to that many finals in a row takes on an athlete. So there's a chance that playing four seasons of games in three years catches up to them.

I'm not saying this because I'm a fan, but I truly think this Panthers team is special, they're as talented as any team in the league, deeper than most, extremely well coached, they have no weakness. In the last few days I've heard analysts debate whether this team is the best team they've seen in the past 20-30 years, they're that good. We'll see what happens in the offseason, but until someone beats them four times, to me they're still the team to beat
