That's nuts! It makes horseracing unplayable.

only get interested at horse matchups at -110, usually around triple crown time.

the spirit of horse racing is ''my horse can beat your horse'' not the bastardized big fields necessary as jk said by the onerous takeouts.

This would be an awesome topic to spend an hour on during your show leading up to the derby, you and a guest can list odds in a short field and odds in a large field and talk about the difference in appearance of the takeout. You can end the show with a real cliffhanger: which percentage is greater, 1/5 or 20/100? 1st listener calling in with the correct answer the following show wins a Patrick McQuiggan 5 DVD set instructing how to wager on small sample post position results and build losing tickets with other people's money.

I once saw a match race at Del Mar where the two horses were listed on the toteboard at odds of 1-2 and 4-5.

Yikes!

Breakage is a bitch in short fields.

sit down to a poker game where every pot is raked 15%.

it's not long before everybody is broke.

back in the day of no racinos, just the hardcore track degenerates, if you'd check out the parking lots, you'd see mainly a wide assortment of clunkers.
