BACK FROM SEEING BILLY JOEL IN VIRGINIA BEACH...

I last saw Billy Joel in concert about 30 years ago. My memory of his performance back then is somewhat fuzzy. I recall he was awesome, entertaining, and wild. I didn't know what to expect 3 decades later...

I can tell you that he hasn't lost his voice.

Many of my favorites rock stars from the 70's can't reach the high notes, but Billy did exactly that tonight...

Even without playing songs like Honesty, Just the Way You Are, and Uptown Girl, he had so much material to keep fans like me rocking...

Aside from Piano Man, he shocked me with how well he still sang "Captain Jack" and "My Life..."

I have been fortunate enough to see Elton John and Rod Stewart in concert twice in the past decade. Although I like the music of both of these two slightly more, none of them can sing today like Billy Joel can...

I am in a New York State of mind right now so pardon my diatribe...

BILLY JOEL ROCKS!!!!!!

THE SHRINK

Re: BACK FROM SEEING BILLY JOEL IN VIRGINIA BEACH...

Glad that you Enjoyed it... as I said before he still has it !
I will get to see him at " the Sewer " ( Shea ) in July.............

Guess he didn't want to sing Uptown Girl.....with what's going on with Christie lately....or maybe Kate won't let him, being that the song was written about Christie....

Re: BACK FROM SEEING BILLY JOEL IN VIRGINIA BEACH...

Yeppers, Uptown Girl was a song he wrote about Christie Brinkley and perhaps he didn't want to reopen that chapter of his life again by singing it...

Who knows..

I like the song but...

If that's the reason he didn't perform it, GOOD FOR HIM....91023i2ndw;l

Re: BACK FROM SEEING BILLY JOEL IN VIRGINIA BEACH...

Ah, I didn't think of that. Probably is the reason.

Re: BACK FROM SEEING BILLY JOEL IN VIRGINIA BEACH...

Not sure if still do but use to go to the casinos with the Pianos at NY, NY and Harrahs in Vegas and Piano Man is the favorite of course

Re: BACK FROM SEEING BILLY JOEL IN VIRGINIA BEACH...

BJ has the kind of talent that transcends generations. When he was current... I could like him at 16, as could my ( now deceased Mom) at 60 (then), kind of a special memory listening to BJ on an 8-track player in the Chevette, on the way to Bridgeport Jai-alai around 1980.

I remember when this song was like an Underground song. Fuking Great song.....

I don't even think I can name 2 songs, out of all his album's that I don't like.

Did he do "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" ?? That song was written when he moved out to LA, and of course came back to Long Island

More then likely from his Drinking...

Re: BACK FROM SEEING BILLY JOEL IN VIRGINIA BEACH...

Yes, the Heim and Piackandwin are spot on. All the drinking and drugging has taken its toll on his looks...

I just remembered he didn't sing "Big Shot" tonight either...

I can tolerate Billy and even like a few songs, but a little sappy overall for my taste. No rough edges, family friendly pop.

He's close to it in age, think he has like another 3-4 years to go.
But he has a Beautiful Young wife !

Always liked him, songs and what he does for Long Island.

Re: BACK FROM SEEING BILLY JOEL IN VIRGINIA BEACH...

I never have seen BJ, but I would in a heartbeat because I liked him, and that special connection to my mother, on my way to degenerancy starting with jai-alai... thanks, MOM ! :dancefool

In fact I even learned to play jai-alai, become almost good enough to be a pro player.

Mom could even tolerate stuff like the Who's "Behind blue eyes", but I couldn't take the Lawrence Welk, more of a Stones,Doors,Skynyrd type lad.

Here's one we could both take :

Review: Billy Joel wows a sold-out crowd in Beach

<c> </c>

By Jeff Maisey
The Virginian-Pilot
? June 22, 2008

As the lyric in Billy Joel's 1973 hit "Piano Man" states, "it was a pretty good crowd for a Saturday." So good, in fact, some of the 20,000 fans at the sold-out Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater that had lawn tickets had to find refuge just over the hill without a view but were nonetheless quite delighted to be essentially wined-and-dined on Joel's most vintage material.

Billy Joel's Saturday night concert was long overdue for this region. His last performance in Hampton Roads was in 1987 at the Hampton Coliseum. With major touring acts such as the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Police and Van Halen bypassing the region, Joel's concert was the event of the summer for fans yearning to see a rock 'n' roll superstar.

<b>"This looks like Woodstock," Joel told the audience as he looked over a sea of humanity.</b>

The entertainer, clad in a dark sports jacket, black T-shirt and blue jeans, opened his show with the dramatic instrumental "Prelude," which led into "Angry Young Man." For much of the evening he sat behind his piano, which occasionally rotated.

<b>Throughout his performance, Joel was personable, joking between songs and appreciative of the crowd's enthusiasm. Like his full band, complete with horn section, Joel's voice and musicanship were dead-on.</b>

Included in his set list: "Allentown," "New York State of Mind," "Captain Jack," "You May Be Right," "My Life," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "We Didn't Start the Fire," "Movin' Out" and the ballad "She's Always a Woman."

Joel returned for a well-deserved encore to perform "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" and "Only the Good Die Young."

It was 10:20 p.m. on this Saturday, when Joel, harmonica strapped around his neck, bid farewell with "Piano Man."
