The nearly quarter-million dollars in winning wagers reportedly placed at MGM Resorts early Sunday might be the largest sportsbook loss in Las Vegas history on bets made after an event has started.

Seven longtime Las Vegas bookmakers can’t recall a larger loss. But each oddsmaker has taken hits on past posts and said it’s a fairly common occurrence at books.

“It’s happened to all of us,” Westgate sportsbook director John Murray said. “I think every sportsbook probably since the beginning of time has dealt with this at some point.

when online sportsbooks started up in the late 1990s, errors were common place. I can remember a basketball game being on the board after the game had ended. Tulane was -28 in the days with Shaun King, and they had it posted as +28 (nothing like a 56 point advantage), etc. They always paid. I think the very last time, my bet was voided.

Canbet had this issue for a few weeks. Their system thought every game would start around 7pm ET so when there were day games in any sport you could cash. I had a horrible losing streak at the time so getting a few winners, albeit small because I didn't want to tip them off, got me turned around.

All these bets made on a kiosk at two in the morning including a 250 dollar 10 team parlay.
Smells like an inside job.
Employee conveniently keeps the games open and friend fires away.
Will be interesting to see if he gets paid.

Inside job, interesting.

At the famous Hilton heist in the fall of 2008, the FBI was summoned to interview all Hilton sports book employees and their contacts.

Contact tracing of a different sort.

different time zone. He left the game up. I could see it happening. This is why you have to have Don Best. I am not saying they are worth it but they do catch many problems you would see at shops.

Is, or was. Something this egregious is a firing offense. Or at least a severe dock of pay offense. How does this happen in today's automated world?

when games time changes the change has to be manual. The computer does not know the new time.

Either the Greek or Bet Jam for a couple years ran an NFL spread weekly for teams not playing each other. Anotherwards it was two teams, one favorite one dog but they weren’t playing each other. They were playing other teams. And they put out a line based on how many points they each scored. So one week they hung Pats V Saints. Side I bet lost and they paid me. So what I figured happened was the grader probably saw New as the first word and both teams were New and I bet everyone got paid.

When I used to go to Yonkers Raceway in the 70's, there was a crew that routinely hung out around the windows and past posted, because the machines, for some reason, didn't lock until a couple of seconds after the gate opened. Early speed and position was so important there, they made countless amounts of $$$. Don't know how this type of stuff can still go in in the automated world we now live in.

No fans there as far as I know.

I'm not aware of a starting time change. Haven't followed the story closely though. I don't bet KBO.

This reminds me of the infamous "Juan Eichelberger" game talked about at ESPN for decades and I had it told to me by many there when I was there and it was also in the ESPN Book

So "way back when" starting times for games was not something set in concrete. And don't forget with no games on TV and no internet and radio only locally. getting updates was tough

So Eichelberger is pitching in the game. As I remember it the score was like 6-0 after T1. I believe he was pitching and got lit.

But the game started earlier than it should have and the bookie people at ESPN all used was not aware of it so when people called in for lines the bookie STILL had this game posted since he did not know it started yet. He didn't know the score was something like 6-0 after T1.

But the guys at ESPN knew because they saw it across the wire or something like that. So, knowing the score was 6-0ish after T1 they all start unloading on the side up 6. I heard people were betting something like 3 weeks pay on the game figuring it was an easy win. I was told this by several people there that the kid doing the 28/58 ticker was going to put the score in the update but Chris Berman flat out told him not to do it. So the kid didn't.

Except it wasn't an easy win. The team that gave up 6 in T1 scored in B9 and ended up WINNING the game. I heard the place was dead silent in the newsroom with everyone realizing they lost a shitload of money.

This is no real shock because if you lived in Bristol - especially back then - betting on anything help cure the boredom of working there. I saw 2 guys bet $500 on which direction the sun would rise the next day (shocker: they were drunk)

So playing games after they started was nothing new way back when

The kiosk had the start time at 3a. Was this on fon best?

I ask because
example : so did they all play a 1 pm .......9 games means 9 different stadiums..... they might of changed it because of the flu... they want everyone out of the stadiums for a reason.... so many examples can be used
The korean baseball in their system started at 3am.

The games actually started at 1am

They had almost 1.5 hours of game info to get on multiple games.

Seems odd start times would be off this much.

Don't have all of the details, but the gaming commission voided all the bets.
MGM does not have to pay.

Those are the details. Commission was leaning to void the bets the whole way but gave the bettors a chance to launch a counter argument. No way to really do it though, the casinos always have a lot of rights to declare void payoffs because of an error. This happens with slots all the time, patrons have never prevailed for much in Nevada.

It was the right move. I just hope that if the bets had lost MGM would have refunded the money, too. Not sure about that, though

FROM THE MOVIE : THE STING

Doyle: I put it all on Lucky Dan- half a million dollars to win.
Kid: To win? I said place! "Place it on Lucky D-" That horse is gonna run second!
Doyle: [runs horrified to the betting booth] There's been a mistake! I want my money back!

The opening odds start here
Korean baseball currently takes place at 5:30 am est weekdays, and mostly 4am on Saturday and Sunday with limited exceptions on weekends.

9 of the last 10 games have been postponed over the last 2 days due to inclement weather, so unless doubleheaders are chosen makeups down the line are going to have to take place on Mondays during their off day.

Given the fact that other than MLB and NBA are just in exhibition mode, and really the only other sports currently in daily operations are soccer and tennis, there is virtually no excuse for a reputable company like MGM to not be able to catch a timing glitch. If these were normal circumstances during a busy time, the error likely would be considered and sustained.

KBO is already approaching the halfway point of its 144 game schedule, with still no fans attending the games.

Unfortunately this makes the leagues and their data providers say this proves you should be buying our services and paying us off.
