Clock is ticking as Michigan waits on legal sports betting

Fanduel at the Blue Chip in Michigan City was SRO Saturday, probably half of them were Michigan fans.

Colorado is officially approved and will start next spring. Michigan I am hearing is better than 50/50, but lots of infighting going on. If they can keep the sports betting clear of the online casino/poker games legalization it will be done. Even hearing good things might be coming out of Missouri early in 2020 for sports betting. And Illinois there has been so much money pledged by operators for books that they are starting to flex their lobbying muscle to tell them to get their act in gear and have sports betting active by Super Bowl at the latest. Plenty of good news on the expansion of sports betting front.

This is getting very frustrating. For the last 3 weeks, there has been zero news on any progress within the State of MI for passing legalization of Sports Wagering. Last news was to announce that the bill had passed the state house, and that it was going to the senate, with a threat from the Governor to veto the bill, as she believes not enough taxes will be raised as is. Plus she believes it will affect online lottery sales, which benefits the schools.

In looking at the State Senate session schedule, they are in session only 3 days a week for the first 3 weeks in December. So hopefully, in those 9 days, the bill will be voted on, and sent to the governor. We shall see what happens.

boggles the mind how they can’t take sports wagering proceeds and funnel that to the schools also.

Just remember the tribes have a strong voice behind the scenes that gets heard.

On their terms and in a way that benefits them.
They are in a very competitive market by me. Four Winds (largest in Mich) by me is competing against 4 casinos between them and Chicago that have sports betting. Their odds on everything else are in line with other casinos. Now the UP is full of smaller casinos, owned by one tribe, they could be different.

I know the market well, have done work for Four Winds. Not working on the sports betting with them now but I know what they are thinking. They would be fine with it being just location only and no online. They have a gaming compact that rewards them if that was the case. If it becomes statewide everyone has mobile and the governor gets her way with a high tax this is nearly worthless to them. So they are doing the lobbying for no mobile which of course sucks for the players but serves their needs. The commercial casinos would hate that because most sports bettors are not going to like to have to drive into Detroit from the burbs just to place a bet. They need mobile and need a fair tax. If they do they will dominate the business in Michigan and the tribes will be unhappy about it. So that's why I say the tribes are going to quietly be a problem along with the Governor who sees all the money PA is getting in taxes and saying anything less is a "gift" to the casinos.

Thanks for the clarification.

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Michigan would legalize sports betting and internet gambling under bills that lawmakers hope to send to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer by the end of the week.
A state Senate committee unanimously passed a 10-bill package Tuesday.
WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick says the legislation is expected to fly through the Legislature, with approval by the full Senate happening either today or tomorrow.
"The governor is expected to sign this," Skubick reported."The state will make some money; not a boatload of money. Starting out the first year maybe $50 million."
The tax on sports wagering receipts after winnings are paid out would be 8.4%. The tax on internet poker and other online games would range between 20% and 28%.
Most of the new revenue would go to Michigan's fund for public schools.
Supporters contend the legislation will deal a big blow to organized crime, which has been making all of the money off of illegal sports betting, Skubick said.
"Now with the state regulating this, Curtis Hertel, the State Senator, tells us organized crime's gonna take a hit."
The bills include safeguards designed to keep children from betting on their phones.
More than 10 states have passed sports gambling legislation, including Indiana, after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on gambling in May of last year.

How much organized crime is there in Michigan in regards to wagering?

You and I both know the answer.

In fact I would argue that some of the entities about to be awarded legal sports betting (looking at you, Pokagon Band) have more in common with the mob than the black market operators currently running the show.

Watching live, the Lawful Sports Betting Act in MI passes in the Michigan Senate, 35-3!!!!

There was one senator, McBroom who got up and spoke about why he was voting no. He is a conservative republican who was bitching about alcohol, weed, and how gambling. Fu*k him!!!

Now on to the governor for signature.

They project things will be up and running by march madness once licenses are sorted out, etc.

They mentioned and recognized 45 employees from MGM on hand to witness this vote as well.

Detroit Casinos Expected To Launch Onsite Sports Wagering March 11

On Tuesday, March 10, the Board is anticipated to give final approval.

Detroit – The three Detroit casinos expect to be authorized by the Michigan Gaming Control Board to conduct onsite sports wagering beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, just a few months after a public act legalizing the gaming was signed into law.

On Tuesday, March 10, the Board is anticipated to give final approval after presentations by the three commercial casinos at its 9:30 a.m. public meeting at Cadillac Place in Detroit. All preliminary requirements have been met to go live the next day.

“With just 11 weeks to prepare, MGCB staff worked hard to make the launch of onsite sports betting at the Detroit casinos possible by March Madness,” said Richard S. Kalm, MGCB executive director. “The casinos and their suppliers helped us by their timely efforts to share information we needed to authorize the gaming. This new gaming opportunity has been highly anticipated, and we hope citizens will enjoy it and see benefits from additional revenue to both the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit.”

The MGCB issued provisional licenses to suppliers who assist the casinos with onsite sports betting by providing sports betting kiosks and information among other services. The agency will continue work to issue full licenses to the suppliers in the coming months.

The MGCB will not regulate onsite sports wagering at Michigan’s tribal casinos. The tribal casinos will announce their launch of onsite sports betting individually.

MGCB staff continues to develop administrative rules for online sports betting, online casino gaming and fantasy sports. The rules should be final by early 2021, and online and mobile sports betting and gaming can begin next year after proper licenses are issued to the Michigan tribes and the Detroit commercial casinos and the firms that assist with these activities.

Today the agency also published a new information page about sports betting and online gaming on its website, https://www.michigan.gov/mgcb. The page can be accessed from a link on the site’s home page.

That really is shocking. Guess the Detroit casinos greased those wheels very well, bet the whole not until 2021 message the MGCB was sending out was actually pay up for us to hire some people and we'll get it done sooner.
