Early Season NCAA Considerations

Early season NCAA offers numerous opportunities, my primary focus is not to declare conference champions or the NCAA Final Four but to pin point matchups that may be worthy of consideration.

Detroit
Veteran club can only benefit having guard Brandon Cotton for a full year after missing the first half of last season. This well coached defensive minded five has a date in Louisville Dec 24 that could prove interesting should Vegas continue their love fest with Pitino.

Hofstra?s
Terrific backcourt duo Stokes 18+ppg and Aguido will invade highly questionable Notre Dame squad Nov 22 in what could be a bit more than the early season cannon fodder the Irish anticipate.

George Mason
Lead by returning 6?7? Jai Lewis 13+PPG-7.5 RPG will cause problems with anyone in the paint especially with GMU?s perimeter game. This talented squad visits Colonial favorite ODU Dec 03

Canisuis
A balanced vet squad with a half dozen or so narrow losses last season return Kevin Downey (16.5 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.7 apg), a two-time second-team all-conference selection, Darnell Wilson (11.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Chuck Harris (9.6 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.8 apg) and Jon Popofski (10.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg).

Samford
Returns all conference forward J.R. Merritt 16.5 ppg plus a BC that shot over 50%, tough early game with Oklahoma but once conference play begins they could be a load in the MVC.

Fordham
Wittenburgs frosh laden squad gave indications of things to come last year with wins over Temple and Xavier. Picked to finish near the bottom of the A-10 this is a must watch team with 3 double-digit scorers and 8 returning players with DD minutes.

Binghamton
Strong guard play and a more up tempo game should fit well as Bearcats return 4 starters highlighted by Heard 14.3 ppg and Hailey?s accuracy from behind the arc. Niagara comes calling Nov 18

Arkansas
Off a disappointing 2005 will be hard pressed not to surpass expectations this season. The talent level puts highly regarded Stan Heath on the hot seat entering his fourth year. With one of the nations premier players Ronnie Brewer 16.2 ppg, 3.4 apg and 4.8 rebounds the Razorbacks are deep and talented. U Conn Nov 21 at the Maui Classic will provide an early indication.

Teams worth noting;

Murray State
Deep athletic Racers return in tact, Nov 30 Tennessee at the Gaylord Center in Nashville.

New Orleans
5 returning starters lead by Bo McCalebb 22.6 ppg.
Another displaced Louisiana program will begin their season at the
Herrington Patriot Center,Tyler Texas however with a solid veteran five this should be Towe?s best year. Nov 30
