Saturday, November 23, 2019—1133 BYU First Half -24½ -115 (YouWager)

12 pm EST/9 am PST (PLOF)—Independent (until at least 2022) UMass (1-10 SU, 2-9 ATS) is probably one of the three worst teams in FBS, and on Saturday, fellow Independent BYU (6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) heads 2,314 miles and 2 Time Zones east to McGuirk Alumni Stadium (FieldTurf) in Amherst, MA to face the Minutemen in a game which currently (Thursday) sees the Cougars as big 39½- to 40½-point Road chalks with the Total at 68½ to 69½. I am winless this week and proving how hard Sports Gambling is once again. It's always easier before it starts.

With the Minutemen just joining FBS in 2012, these two have only played three times with BYU 2-1 SU and 2-1 ATS with the Cougars 1-0 SU/ATS in the Commonwealth, winning 35-16 last year (BYU -14) after the first two series meeting ever were played in the Beehive State with the Minutemen upsetting BYU as 3½-point Road Underdogs two years ago, showing how different these two programs are since 2017. Fourth-year HC Kalani Sitake (25-21 ATS) deserves some credit.

Here, there are some Injury concerns with Cougars QB Zach Wilson listed as Questionable—BYU’s 4th-string guy (Critchlow) may actually play after some time—and UMass QB Randall West as Probable, but the Final Score in this spot would likely be close to what it will actually be if one or both need their backup or if Wilson and West both start. It just doesn’t matter. UMass is last in FBS in Scoring Defense, allowing 52.4 ppg, or almost 12 points more than the 130th ranked team, New Mexico State (40.8 ppg) and the porous Minutemen have given up 576 points already in 2019.

BYU is tied for #51 in Scoring Defense, allowing 25.6 ppg and UMass averages 19.4 ppg (#114), so you have to give the hosts 10 obligatory points in his spot from Site and Average, meaning likely a 50-point hump to climb for BYU to overcome to get the Butter. Can the Cougars score 50 or more here in Amherst, where TWC is forecasting mainly Sunny conditions with a High of 42°and a Low of 28° (just like home) with Light W 7 mph Winds?

The Cougars haven’t scored 50 yet, with last weekend’s 42 (ID ST) equaling BYU’s high-water mark of 42 at Utah St on Nov 2. UMass has allowed 50-59 twice (UCONN, CHAR), but 60-69 four times (COAST CAR, LT, LIB, ARMY) with 29 (AKRON—another of the three worst teams) the least an opponent has scored vs the Minutemen. So BYU—which last scored 50 (51) at UMass three seasons ago in a 51-9 win at Amherst—should get to 50, but this team hasn’t scored 60 since 2014 in a 64-0 Home rout of FCS Savannah St—and the only time the Cougars have hit 60 in over a decade. So 50-60 seems doable with that aforementioned obligatory 10 for the hosts a big factor.

Breaking this one down to the First Half may be the best approach, with BYU more likely to take the opening 30 minutes seriously and likely getting 5 TDs over that focused span. Give UMass 7, and that’s a theoretical 35-7 (+28) score at Halftime. With the 1st Half line currently at (BYU minus) 24½ Offshore, it seems backing BYU at Half may be the safer play with the Minutemen’s D the biggest reason why this is pick.

The L5 Halftime scores for UMass? NW 21-6, ARMY 35-7, LIB 49-14, UCONN 35-21, LT 52-14. So, the Minutemen have always seemed to get a TD (or 2) in the first 30 minutes of late. This may be too generous for a team shuffling QBs with the game flow (BYU's O) affected by revolving door QBs, even vs UMass. I have written too much to scrap in that Little Computer Garbage Can so this is a lowest level (Red) pick.
