GD: 10k Asylum Bankroll Challenge

Since this is a gambling site I figured I would set aside 10k to make some picks and see where it goes. Since I don't take myself as seriously as most I figured it belongs down here in the asylum so that we can entertain ourselves with half-naked pics and funny videos in the even the gambling thing doesn't strike an emotional chord.

A few things to remember:

1) Picks will be in fairly obscure sports but will be available to bet at most outs.

2) I do not guarantee the success or failure of this at all.

3) Rules as to why and what amounts I am betting will be explained as we go further along. Hopefully everyone, myself included, can learn something along the way.

4) Records will be updated periodically to keep accountable.

Feel free to comment or play along at home. Just don't expect a response or acknowlegdement if the level of maturity is not kept up to standards (or since this is the asylum, the humor and insults are not up to par).

Quick summary and discussion seminar:

Had pace of Ga./Mizzou right but missed taking 1st half instead of game. These things tend to even themselves out over time, but in future preference might be to lean game over halves.

Oldenburg played to lowest level and Tigers played best game. Result still did not change. High money line faves are risky but can beget value when the actual results would far surpass the odds. Stay within bankroll management requirements when betting these.

Monster ML faves can be bet for normal units for pocket change. They can add up over time. In reality, this was simply a 3-unit (1.8% of bankroll in comparison to 0.6% for Ga/Mo total) bet for some juice down the road.

Was very selective and conservative to start and feel that pyschologically building up confidence and winning can be helpful to choosing sides.

Quick summary and discussion:

The day's results basically boiled down to USC losing as a 7/1 favorite. Honestly, saw some value there but it did not work out. Essentially utilizing the .6% of B.R. per unit play, this was a 3.5 unit loss. Not a disaster at all but nonetheless disappointing. It is important to be able to sustain these ocassional losses on big money line favorite if you are going to bet them.
Got a good number on the Riverside game, lost by a hair on the Drake total which had the proper pace-side, and Dell'acqua was up a set and serving for match in third before losing. These are everyday things and not something to worry about as they will fall in place if you are on the correct side long term.

you need 7 in a row to make up the ORE game. I know it's not impossible by any means. But say u win 4 and lose another 7-1 fav and now u need 11 in a row. Seems a bit scary

Not all that huge a setback. It is essentially a 3.5 unit loss as I had a base of 60 or 0.6 of bankroll.
Psychologically, it could impact a bettor and cause one to chase. It won't affect me that way as it is just one point in a long string of data.
Whether it is -110, -700, +700, or -7000 is only relevant to the true odds estimated. If USC played at Oregon State tomorrow, I would make that same bet (more so since they lost today, actually).

You can't blindly take big favorites, rather it is important to pick and choose your spots. They will lose from time to time but as long as you are getting the best of it, they will even out.

Don't know if you remember in the past my 75-team parlay thread. Hitting 75 in a row at any favorite price is difficult indeed (and proven doubly so when I lost like the 4th game when I tried again).

I could also hit a +700 dog tomorrow (which you will see in obscure stuff like tennis soon) and be right back in the game.

ohh ok, i never really play big favs much since i see $20 bucks or something on wins since u hafta risk so much then im like eh it's not worth it. But i guess u are right, it adds up over time.

i didn't see the parlay thread. It's not a good idea to parlay those huge ml favs is what i'm guessing?

You don't have to risk to win a unit on those big ML faves, in fact, that would be a quick way to the poorhouse (witness: UNC tonight).

The parlay thing was posted elsewhere. Essentially I took 1 unit ($100) and continually parlayed the winnings. About 3 months later, 75 wagers, and +$2000 it ended. Several close calls along the way.

It was more for fun and to see if I could do it than anything. Like I said, next try I lost on about the 4th game. Several others had similar results.

Always nice psychologically to have that winning and undefeated day. Also nice to watch the games come in and not have to sweat them too much when they are blow outs that you were on the right side.

It is important to be in the right frame of mind to be a winner. The psychological impact on winning and losing wagers is something that is rarely discussed but needs more attention as it is very important. Your mind and eyes will play tricks on you at times and you have to learn to recognize when what you see is not always what you get.
