Trouble with having to pick from lists like this is that the tragically hip people tend to publicly (and predictably) choose the hipper, edgier choices in order not to appear uncool, when the music really does not reflect their true tastes.
Kinda like in "the old days," when you would get a booklet in the mail from Neilsen to record your television viewing habits for a week, and everybody wrote down all the PBS shows they "watched."
Take "The Carpenters." Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices on the list, but it's hopelessly uncool to like her music. You tell your therapist you like "The Carpenters," and you will immediately be shipped off to rehab with the Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow addicts.
I mean, these acts don't even say "Fuck" in concert. How can we possibly rate them as artistes?
