The Indianapolis Colts are winning, but it is not Peyton Manning and their explosive offence that is doing the damage.

Thanks to a defence that has allowed just 16 points in the first three games, the Colts are unbeaten heading into Sunday's matchup against the AFC South Division rival Tennessee Titans.

Manning threw for a single-season record 49 touchdowns and the Colts scored a league-high 522 points - the fourth highest in a season - in 2004.

However, Manning and the offense have yet to get going this season, scoring just 39 points in three games. They totalled 100 points through three games last season.

Manning, the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player, has just two touchdown passes, with both coming in the season opener. He never has gone three straight games in his career without throwing a TD pass.

But Manning's slump has a good chance at ending Sunday. In leading the Colts to a pair of wins over the Titans last season, he completed 49-of-66 passes for 679 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions.

Led by end Dwight Freeney, the Colts' defence has been the early story. They have not allowed a touchdown in the last two games and have given up just one TD and three field goals.

Freeney recorded three sacks last week, leading the Colts to a 13-6 victory over Cleveland.

Steve McNair, who shared MVP honouoffencers with Manning in 2003, still leads the Titans' offence. He has thrown for 675 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions in three games. McNair went 24-of-39 for 261 yards, two TDs and two interceptions in last week's 31-27 loss at St. Louis.
