The opening odds start here
Pittsburgh -14.5 over Stanford:
The Panthers (6-2 4-10 look to make a return to the top 25 and their chances look better than likely if they could upend Stanford (3-5 2-3) Saturday afternoon in week 10. Pitt is looking for their 5th straight win overall and last week outscored ACC opponent NC State (4-4 1-3) 53-34 at Acrisure Stadium. Mason Heintschel (28/48 423 3 TD) had one of his better starts for the Panthers in this, his Freshman season. He completed a 7 yard scoring pass to Raphael Williams Jr. (5-62 1 TD) that increased the Panthers lead to 10 points midway through the second quarter. he then found Kenny Jordan (7-112 1 TD) on a 10 yard scoring connection late in the half. In the 3rd quarter Heintschel hooked up with Cataurus Hicks (4-120 1 TD) on an 84 yard bomb that gave the Panthers a 19 point lead late in the third quarter which originally outscored the Wolfpack 15-0. Ja'Kyrian Turner (13-50 3.8 2 TD) had runs of one yard to open the scoring and then later from 6 yards out, while Desmond Reid (13-41 3.2 1 TD) added a 2 yard run to paydirt. The Panthers despite weary on defense had the game well in hand and played a turnover free game. Trey Butkowski converted 4 of his 5 field goal attempts. CJ Bailey (24/40 225 3 TD) played well for NC State hooking up with Justin Joly (6-101 2 TD), once from 25 yards, and then another on a 59 yard TD connection from Teddy Hoffman coming off a flee flicker wildcat situation. Hollywood Smothers (8-86 10.8 1 TD) ran a marathonish 65 yard TD that brought the Wolfpack to within 17-14 early in the second quarter, but that was as close as they got. Pittsburgh's defense forced 2 lost fumbles and outgained NC St 529-445 and nearly doubled in the first downs department 29-15. Meanwhile, the Cardinal (3-5 2-3) held the lead for about a quarter and a half early, but didn't produce much more offense and the Hurricanes (6-1 2-1) eventually blew Stanford out 42-7 at Hard Rock Stadium. Ben Gulbranson (9/21 50 1 TD 2 INT) got Stanford an early lead thanks to a 9 yard scoring toss to Caden High (3-36 1 TD) late in the first quarter. Otherwise it was all doom and gloom for the Cardinal the rest of the way on offense. The Hurricanes tied things up late in the first quarter as Carson Beck (21/28 189 1 TD) completed a 5 yard scoring pass to CJ Daniels (3-8 2.7 1 TD) at 7 apiece with just over a minute remaining in the half. Mark Fletcher (23-106 4.6 3 TD) then ran it in from a yard out, one of 3 TD runs int he second half and Miami then regained cruise control. Jordan Lyle (6-24 4.0 1 TD) then scored from 17 yards out, and then the 'Canes Girard Pringle Jr. (3-12 4.0 1 TD) completed Miami's 5 rushing scores in the 4th running one in from 3 yards out. It was a must win for the Canes as they kept their playoff contention hopes alive. .Miami outgained Stanford 404-144, recorded 25 first downs and forced 3 turnovers while holding the ball for 36 minutes. Stanford now has alternating wins and losses over their last 6 games and are in danger of missing a bowl spot.

Heintschel (95/146 1246 9 TD 3 INT) continues to play well for Pitt since Eli Holstein (74/119 1058 11 TD 6 INT) was injured and eventually benched due to poor play. The freshman does have two dangerous receivers in the core, led by Johnson (33-505 3 TD) and Williams Jr. (32-488 5 TD) who leads the Panthers in TD receptions. They also have a 2 headed monster in the backfield, namely Turner (66-274 4.2 6 TD) and Desmond Reid (55-266 4.8 2 TD). Pitt averages right around 40 points per game and 40th in total offense at 422 total yards, but 10th in passing dealing out 303 such yards overall. Neither of these bode well for Stanford's defense, which yields nearly 30 ppg, and is 21st worst in the nation, including 5th worst giving up 293 passing yards per game. Matt Rose leads the team with 69 tackles, but has only 1 of his team's 15 sacks. That honor is led by DL Clay Patterson's 4 overall. Colin Wright, who has 25 tackles also has just the only INT on the entire defensive roster.

Gulbranson (131/230 1585 8 TD 7 INT) has had some bright spots and some not so bright this season, but another couple of them is his strong arm and his ability to take chances. He has improved since the Cardinal's opening 2 losses this season, but a bowl berth clinching is something that worries himself as well as former NFL coach and interim Frank Reich. CJ Williams (41-484 2 TD) and Bryce Ferrell (21-392 1 TD) have dependable pairs of hands but have only combined for 3 scores all season. Micah Ford (99-425 4.3 3 TD) and Cole Tabb (86-376 4.4 2 TD) have gotten the body of the footwork in the backfield, however an issue for Stanford is being able to complete key drives with either field goals or red zone turnovers. Stanford is 6th worst in the country in the running game and are middle of the road passing. However, they are only averaging 18 ppg and are 12th worst in the nation when it comes to total offense at just 306.

Pittsburgh continues to charge in the ACC hoping to capture a playoff contention clinch as they just continue to win despite hitting the road in week 10. Stanford is going to have a rough road just to make a bowl selection given the fact they don't have the speed nor the athleticism to stay close. Heintschel meanwhile is showing he could get the passing game along with the running game down to a system that scores with multiple results consistently. Stanford can't afford to go toe t toe in a shootout so their offense while not skilled enough is going to have to do its best to keep the Panthers off the field and shorten the game is they can cash in on a takeaway or two.

2) Indiana -21.5 over Maryland:
The second ranked Hoosiers (8-0 5-0) remained one of 6 unbeatens left in the country, and proved their dominance last week with a 56-6 thrashing of UCLA (3-5 3-2) at Memorial Stadium last week. Aiden Fisher intercepted the first pass of the game and returned it 25 yards for a TD and the stage was set extremely early. Roman Hemby (17-81 4.8 2 TD) had running scores of 1 and 13 yards in the first half, while the Mendoza brothers Fernando (5-45 9.0 1 TD) and Alberto (4-39 9.8 1 TD) each scored on TD runs from 20 and 4 runs respectively in the second half with the game well out of reach. Fernando (15/22 168 3 TD 1 INT) threw the ball well too although head coach Cignetti certainly couldn't do much to call off the dogs even in the second half. Elijiah Sarratt (2-6 1 TD) caught a one yard pass in the first half that saw the Hoosiers increase their lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter. Fernando also threw a 2 yard TD toss to EJ Williams Jr (5-109 2 TD) that gave Indiana a 35-3 halftime lead over the Bruins. Fernando opened the second half with a 20 yard TD run of his own, and then hooked up with Williams Jr again on a 62 yard TD pass late in the game. Former Tennessee alum Nico Iamaleava (13/27113 2 INT) dealt with a step downi n class from his Volunteer days and was completely inaccurate unable to lead the Bruins into the end zone. UCLA only amassed 88 rushing yards and 201 overall the entire game. Mateen Bhagani provided the only offense for the Bruins on 2 fairly long field goals. Indiana amassed 475 total yards on offense while forcing 4 turnovers, produced 27 first downs and holding the ball for 36:00. Meanwhile, Maryland (4-3 1-3) was on a bye last week after dropping a heartbreaking 20-17 loss to these same UCLA Bruins.

Mendoza (148/203 1923 24 TD 3 INT) is easily one of the top 3 candidates for Heisman and has a staggering 8:1 TD/INT ratio. Omar Cooper Jr (40-607 7 TD) and Elijiah Sarrat (44-585 10 TD) are respectively a one two punch in receiving yards and TD catches. Hemby (107-513 4.8 4 TD) and Kaelom Black (82-509 6.2 3 TD) are Cignetti's top rushers in the backfield who complete balance and domination when it comes to the running game. Indiana averages just under 35 ppg but most of their damage is done in the first half as they look to control primarily in the first half. They are 5th in the country averaging about 494 total yards per contest. The Terrapins defense is no slouch, though they give up about 352 total yards and give up an average of 17.3 ppg which could present a challenge to the Hooisers' high powered offense. They are pretty confident in the running game as they are 39th overall yielding 125 yards and 53rd in the country. Daniel Windgate leads the team in tackles with 65 and Sidney Stewart has 6 of his team's 23 sacks as there is plenty of balance in the Maryland corners and tackles. Jalen Huskey also leads the Terrapins in INT with 4 of his team's 15. So while Maryland can't match up to Indiana when it comes to scoring points, Maryland could certainly provide a challenge to an otherwise offense chocked up with playmakers.

Malik Washington (160/268 1716 11 TD 3 INT) does like to throw the ball a lot, but he like Mendoza, also has an impressive TD to ratio comparison with 3 thus far, excellent as he loves to take chances down the field. Shaleak Knotts (26-421 5 TD) leads the team in receiving yards and TD receptions. Octavian Smith Jr (27-378) is second in receiving yardage but hasn't found the end zone this season. Jalil Farooq (31-277 1 TD) is third in receiving yards, but first in receptions. The achilles heel looks to be in the running game led by DeJuan Williams (83-292 3.5 2 TD) who is the lone workhorse. The Terps are lacking depth when it comes to the rushing game as evident by their 103 ground game yards which is 10th worst in the country. However they do average 250 yards passing and their 27 ppg ranks 100thj overall as they look to end a 3 game losing streak. They are certainly a pass first team but could be challenged by Indiana's stout and dominating defense that allows only 11 points per game and 243 all purpose yards overall, ranking 6th in the country. Louis Moore leads the Hoosiers with 55 tackles, Tyrique has 6 of his team total of 30 sacks, while Moore also has 5 picks out of Indiana's 12 overall.

While Indiana's Mendoza stakes his claim to capture the Heisman trophy come season's end, we all know how dangerous they are on both sides of the ball. Maryland still poses competitive stats on both sides of the ball, one lacking glare is their collapsing running game. Keep in mind they did start off their season perfect with wins against the likes of FAU, NIU, Towson, and Wisconsin...yeah, ugh! Not saying that Maryland couldn't keep this one close, but as the experts say, to stay undefeated, you have to play like you're undefeated. I still can't see Mendoza not spraying the ball over the field, and given Indiana's dominant rushing edge, they should do their best to pull away in the second half.

Louisiana Tech -16 -120 over Sam Houston:

Last weekend at Ruston, LA, George Hart had a TD run the second OT of their matchup with Western KY against Louisiana Tech, and Rodney Tisdale Jr found Moussa Barry for a game winning 2 point conversion, and the Hilltoppers (6-2 4-11) became bowl eligible stunning the Bulldogs (4-3 2-2) 28-27 last Tuesday night. Both teams blocked field goals in the final 2:00 heading into the extra sessions tied at 20 after regulation. The Hilltoppers nearly blew a 13 point halftime lead but held on to become bowl eligible for the 7th straight season. Tisdale (21/34 227 1 TD 1 INT) didn't exactly have eye opening stats but made the key plays when they counted. Hart (13-26 2.0 2 TD) ran for scores of one yard and 4 in the OT. John Hoyet Chance split the uprights on both of his 24 yard field goal attempts. Tisdale Jr (12-73 6.1) led WKU in rushing, while Lavell Right's 15 yard TD reception was his only catch of the night. Blake Baker (31/45 340 1 TD 1 INT) played one of his better games, but several of his drives were either slowed down or led to punts, Andrew Burnette (11-33 3.0 1 TD) ran for a 2 yard score and Baker connected with Tre Averhart scored on a 6 yard TD, his only catch of the game. Burnette's run gave the Bulldogs a 7 point lead before Hart's heroics. Meanwhile, Sam Houston St looks for their first win on a bye after getting upended by UTEP 35-17 in their last contest. They come in 0-7 and 0-4 in conference play.

(25) Memphis -13.5 -120 over Rice:
We know it's been a couple of weeks (6-2 3-1) since the once unbeaten Tigers (7-1 3-1) lost to UAB but rebounded last week to edge previously 18th ranked South Florida 34-31 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Cortez Braham Jr (7-75 2 TD), caught a 10 yard pass from Brendon Lewis (27/44 307 2 TD) with 1:05 remaining to pull off the upset after earlier catching a 5 yard TD pass that brought the Tigers to within 21-14 in the second quarter. Memohis came from behind 14 points to score the final 17 unanswered from late in the third quarter. Lewis also ran for 35 yards on 11 carries only averaging 3.2 ypc. Greg Deroisers (11-33 3.0 1 TD) scored on a 14 yard TD run to bring Memphis to within 31-23 early in the 4th quarter. Jamari Hawkins led Memphis with 85 receiving yards on 3 catches. Byrum Brown (26/43 269 1 TD 1 INT) had an opportiunity for the Bulls to get even with a field goal, but he was working with no timeouts and time ran out over the last minute. Brown completed a Jeremiah Kroger (5-78 1 TD) pass of 5 yards that gave USF a 21-7 second quarter lead. Brown (21-121 5.8 2 TD) exercised his option and ran for 3 and 44 yard TD's as South Florida controlled the first 3 quarters. The Bulls outgained the Tigers 564-450 as each team produced 30 first downs. Mempohis controlled the time of possession with 33 minutes. Meanwhile, Rice (4-4 2-2) edged U Conn (5-3 2-3) 37-34 thanks to a 23 yard TD run by Qjuinton Jackson (21-168 8.0 3 TD) in the second OT. Jackson earlier had TD runs of 73 and 6 yards respectively, and also caught a 75 yard TD pass (3-80 1 TD) from Chase Jenkins (17/22 191 1 TD). Joe Fagano (32/48 344 3 TD) played with true effort which would have proven to be a big win for the Huskies but his defense could not stand up to the Owls passing and running games. Cam Edwards (16-59 3.7 1 TD) scored on a 5 yard run that sent the game to a second OT. Edwards (3-24 1 TD) also caught an 8 yard TD pass from Fagano but in the end, Connecticut couldn't hold their fg lead.

Lewis (141/208 1644 10 TD 4 INT) has had a very productive season for the Tigers, who are looking to punch their ticket to the CFP come season's end despite playing out of the American. Braham Jr. (36-566 7 TD) far and away leads Memphis in receiving yardage and catches. Jamari Hawkins (24-431) despite being a viable backup second option still hasn't scored a TD all season. Sutton Smith (85-515 6.1 6 TD) is the leading rusher for the Tigers, and Lewis (97-470 4.8 7 TD) does call his own number quite often, and has a leading 7 rushing TD's. Desrosiers Jr (68-422 6.2 6 TD) is used quite frequently as well. Memphis is chock full of offense averaging a shade under 38 ppg. They are top 15 in rushing averaging 210 yards and 30th in the country with 484 average yards overall. Rice's defense has improved drastically over the last 3 years but still give up 28.5 points per contest along with 373 total yards, middle of the road in the country. Andrew Awe has a team leading 59 tackles, Tony Anyanwu has 4 of his team's 16 sacks, but their achille's heel is just 3 picks all season.

Jenkins (77/111 744 5 TD 1 INT) has been very efficient up to this moment of the season where they still stand eligible for a postseason bowl berth. Drayden Dickman (28-292 3 TD) is the lone setback downfield, as the primary output for Rice has been their running game. Quinton Jackson (117-655 5.6 6 TD) is the team's lone threat and playmaker in the backfield. Daelen Alexander (68-379 5.6 3 TD) is a less versatile back but a good second option overall. The Owls average about 330 yards overall but are not so impressive on offense averaging just 21.5 ppg. Sam Brunfield has 57 tackles overall, and has 6 of his team's 15 sacks. Memphis can also be dominant in the backfield as evened out by their 12 INT overall. Their defense has become a bit more vulnerable but still only allow 20 points per contest on the nose.

Memphis has won 11 of it's previous 12 games overall. Plus just as dangerously they hold a distinct advantage on both sides of the ball. Given the importance of every regular season game down the stretch, we don't see Memphis falling victim in the let down spot. Rice is overmatched and physically at a disadvantage when trying to stop this high powered offense. I see a high scoring game with Memphis pulling away decisively keeping their National College Football playoff chances remaining in good standing.

Best of luck in week 10
YTD 11-12 .478 -2.90

Finally. Our first sweep of the season. What made it sweet?

First one of Friday and Saturday in the week.
Second, a 4 gamer.
Lastly...Pittsburgh by the hook in selection four.

This one was vastly needed considering the up and down season, with even a little more good lick giggling from the prude himself.

Thanks and congrats to all that followed. Back up and over break even.
