Mission accomplished. Broncos destroyed.

Horrible GM really

He inherited a stud defense, which is now a shell of its former self.

Could never pick a qb worth a damn.
Got lucky with Manning, who at the time of trade couldnt throw 20 yards.

Ummm not the way it happened, inherited a defense? Anyways the leash is shortening and once a new owner is determined he may not survive another poor season. Current caretaker will never fire him.

TYVM Morgan William!!!
I have been rooting for this team since the first SB run. Elway is one of the all-time greatest QBs EVER! There is no debating that

Elway is a mediocre player evaluator - and that is being very kind. Hasn't drafted a decent QB, yet and because Lock will miss some time his usefulness is TBD. Where Lock was picked he was worth a shot but the jury is very much debating this pick

Flacco looked like a statue tonight and he runs as fast as one. If the Raiders pathetic D got to him imagine what Da Bears will probably do to him Sunday! Broncos O/U RSW was 7.......pretty much priced the same both ways. Right now U7 looks decent

.......................and let's talk about how STUPID Fangio was in 4Q. You are trailing by 15 with 8+ left and on 4th down you..................KICK A FG!? Really So you make it. You are now down 12 - meaning 2 scores. Made no sense to kick a FG when you need 15 points

I think the mistake the team made was not using the preseason well. Flacco showed little decisiveness in his throws and you could see his receivers were not on the same page at times. This offense should be able to eat up an aggressive defense like the Raiders were playing with quick hits to hot reads but Flacco clearly didnt bring that tonight and Lock would certainly be worse. If they had actually used the preseason games to develop some game timing and feel, instead of confirming they had to cut the other crap QBs, things might have looked different. In any event Flacco is a one and done, if Lock looks decent they draft a QB day three next year. If he's not looking good then someone is getting picked in the first round. Will Elway be making that decision, TBD.

And yeah the FG was a joke. Didn't really affect the game so hopefully the staff realizes their error and cleans simple strategy errors up soon before they do cost a win.

One of the talking heads should have been quick to point this out. You know someone like Al Michaels would have.

Ellway doesn’t get it. After their super bowl win and Kubiak left they already had Wade Phillips on staff as DC. Any smart GM hires another offensive minded HC and lets Phillips continue to do his thing. Elway instead hires Vance Joseph who was DC for the Dolphins and Phillips leaves because he’s been neutered.

The way the game has gone its best to hire offensive guys for HC but Elway didn’t learn his lesson as he hired Fangio

By kicking a FG he might win the game in regulation with 2 more scores that are TDs plus a convert on one of those TDs. By going for it & failing on 4th down he would need at least two TDs, both converted, including at least one successful 2 point try (a 50-50 proposition), just to tie the game which could still be lost. So adding 3 points for his team certainly improves his chances of winning the game relative to getting nothing. How advantageous or detrimental it would be to go for it on 4th down would depend on various factors, such as how long the FG is, weather conditions, how much yardage is needed to get a first down or touchdown, etc (which you didn't go into & i didn't watch the game).

He tried to get Kyle Shanahan but got rebuffed because Elway holds too much power. As long as he's seen as a meddler who only wants a basic coach he won't get much beyond a Fangio or a VJ type who is thankful for the opportunity. I think Fangio was a good hire at this point, but clearly Joseph was not. And Wade wanted more money and a lengthy extension so he was not going to stay.

Easy to question a team and GM but that's the way it is when you go all in to win a title. Lots of aging free agent acquisitions led that team, can't keep that around for long. But mission accomplished, he got two SBs and a title out of it, most franchise would kill for a stretch like that.

With the exception of Jerry West I can't think of too many ex-athletes who excelled at accessing talent.

You are right, there are not many....Richardson of the Carolina Panthers come to mind....you can argue for longtime friends Jones and Johnson from the Cowboys...

Bring back tebow, atleast he can run for 1st downs and makes plays when it matters , this is a 4 12 team at best

Finally dumped as GM in charge of player personnel....

Elway proved he's the Michael Jordan of the NFL in assessing talent.

He took a promotion. Vic Ellis and Elway will all decide who the next GM is.
He took his lumps early on but the last few drafts have been great.

havent seen slipper pete since i landslided him in election results wager, a nice guy which is rare for a lib

If anything, what he failed at was doing a teardown rebuild after they couldn't follow up on the SB win with a playoff team. The writing was on the wall then, it wasn't just Manning and Ware who were over the hill. While there would have been a lot of complaints from the fan base, Elway and the franchise had built up enough goodwill to get away with one bad season and a lot of trades for futures. Instead he tried to do this rolling renewal which is what Pat Bowlen would have wanted and the fan base expects. They don't believe in bad seasons and when they happen they want to fire everyone in sight and act like it couldn't happen to this franchise. As part of that renewal were bad drafts, a poor coaching hire, and questionable contract decisions, especially the below average or worse QBs.

The last three draft classes have been pretty good value wise and the team stopped the bad habit of moving up in the draft and giving away too much capital for it because Russell, who is retiring, ran the draft for the most part. It led to much better results, as they stopped reaching for raw athletes and started valuing proven production more. The challenge for the next GM is 2-3 years down the road he will have to sign all these guys on rookie deals. The one decision of course everyone wants to talk about is Lock. The team almost has to stick with Lock one more season and then as he goes into his last year under rookie deal they can either extend him or draft a potential replacement. Unless a QB they really like falls to them at 9, they can't take the risk of giving away future year picks and then having another bad season because you are in the midst of trying to phase in a new QB. You do dumb things like that and you end up looking really stupid like the Texans do right now having traded away the #3 because they thought they were good.

I guess in your eyes Ozzie Newsome didn't have a clue what he was doing either (Kyle Boller).

Boller was a decent pick. Injuries curtailed his effectiveness. At least he faced a Pac-12 schedule. Lynch out of Memphis
was beating up on East Carolina.

It might sound elementary, nonetheless, you would think a HOF quarterback would have a clue re Qbs. He for
a moment thought Sieman was the answer too.

I will say that Paxton Lynch has to go down as maybe the worst draft choice of all time. How many 1st rounders regardless of position only played in 5 games their entire career. Kid had all the athleticism in the world but he was both the tin man and the scarecrow.

The problem appeared to be that he was thinking about the game as it was in his day and not how the game has evolved. He supposedly gets very enamored with QBs who are tall and doesn't care for QBs that actually run for yardage, preferring those who just have the ability to scramble to extend plays. So yeah, just like what he was. I bet Michael Jordan has the same bias as well, he's probably always thinking what he needs is the next guy who can take over the game himself and hit game winning mid-range jumpers.
