On the same day Churchill Downs announced it’s considering “the timing of the 146th Kentucky Derby this year” given the coronavirus pandemic, five-time winner Bob Baffert said he’s hearing the Run for the Roses could be moved to the summer or fall.
“Nobody’s really sure when anything is going to happen,” the trainer said Saturday at Santa Anita Park, according to a release from the park. “Churchill is saying they’re not going to run the Derby without the people there, so I’m hearing maybe June or in September.”

The two live gates (Oaks Day and Derby Day) at Churchill Downs are important to the company's bottom line.

Horse racing is not like a lot of other sports where television rights fees drive the business.

Some Twitter traffic indicates that almost all Lousiville hotels won't take reservations for Sept 5

The once seemingly improbable has become reality.
Louisville-based Churchill Downs Inc. will postpone the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby to September in the wake of a global outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus that has grounded American sports to a halt in the past week, according to a report from news partner WLKY-TV.
Sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed that report.
The new date for Louisville’s signature event is Sept. 5.
The move was expected as Churchill Downs opened the door last week to postponing the event until later in the year rather than canceling it outright.
An outright cancellation of the Derby would have created a severe economic loss to key industries in Louisville and Kentucky as the event has an estimated annual economic impact of $400 million.

Gonna be a very odd Triple Crown. Have to believe the Preakness at its current date is in doubt. Maybe the Belmont is safe. Would they start the TC with a 1 1/2 mile race?

As I understand it, Derby futures bets thru CD state the Derby must be run in May, and there are no refunds. Regular sports books would issue refunds; CDI? Who knows.

I believe the "no refunds" applies to horses who don't make it into the race, not if the race itself isn't run.

They did announce as they are Greedy that all Pool 1 to Pool 4 futures will stand....that is horrible

anyway only if no 2020 Derby winner (and Oaks) can be named will it be a refund.

this is stealing in so many ways.

if they do them all in the FALL same order same spacing , no superior horse will run the long belmont with the Breeders cup not that far down the road. a triple crown this year would mean nothing. will not be all the top horse. just another large field grade 1 dirt race.....

I didn't read it anywhere. I initially heard about it from a friend who said it was discussed on another board. Just seemed logical. Are they really not refunding?

If that's the case, CDI does not need any more bad publicity. It's outright theft.

Churchill Downs Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen said Tuesday that moving the Kentucky Derby was a difficult and unfortunate decision but also a necessary one as the country tries to clamp down on the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

And Carstanjen said there are now plans in the works to move the entire Triple Crown — rounded out by the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes — to September and October if all parties can come to an agreement. The Preakness is scheduled for May 16 while The Belmont Stakes wraps up the Triple Crown on June 6.

Carstanjen confirmed during a conference call that the Derby will move from May 2 to Sept. 5 while Oaks will be held the day before on Sept. 4. The change is pending approval by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, which should come Thursday.

Carstanjen told reporters that these dates were chosen for Oaks and Derby because of the availability of hotel rooms during this weekend and a slimmer events lineup for NBC, the Kentucky Derby's broadcast partner.

Pushing it to September also gives the country more time to halt the spread of the coronavirus and will give guests more time to reschedule travel and lodging arrangements, Carstanjen said.

Assuming that all this comes to pass and we're back to business as usual by then, the NFL and CFB are going to have an unprecedented amount of competition for viewers this year.

Ironic that Churchill chose the weekend of Sept 5 due to availability of hotel rooms. There's a good chance a number of those hotel companies will be bk by that time.

Any word on sportsbooks grading fixed odds futures?

Not sure about the sports books, W2W.

At Churchill Downs, if you read the fine print of the rules involving Kentucky Derby Future Wagers (KDFW), you see a rule pertaining to "other circumstances."

3. Other Circumstances. Should circumstances occur which are not foreseen in this section, questions arising shall be resolved in accordance with general pari-mutuel practice and at the reasonable discretion of Churchill Downs Incorporated, with the agreement of the stewards and the KHRC.

which means they will keep the 1 million plus pari mutual money bet and let it ride screwing (keeping the track take out) the handicappers who knew MAxfield would not make the field and had some overlays on others...

Also have Tiz $30 to win $480 that looks a lot worse now though
