Nevada still the King in handle

Nevada average sports handle for September 2013-2017 was around $450M. Last year it jumped to $571M, almost certain to exceed NJ, but NJ is rapidly closing the gap in the football and hoops seasons.

agree closing the gap... last year New Jersey did not have as many places to play along with....the marketing news was just kicking off online

CB. How much of NJ total do you estimate was Nevada money moved east once approved.

I really don't have much of an estimate.

In the old days, quite a few bookies laid off local bets with Nevada books to reduce liability. Then messenger betting was cracked down on, but the overall market grew to make up for any shortfall. Mobile betting fed the Nevada growth. Bottom line is probably a bit of money moved to NJ and other states, but not much.

None gets moved from legal Nevada bets into NJ or vice versa. It's very difficult to do it without a trail of evidence and if caught it would bring a harsh response from the feds which is last thing any casino wants. Besides the books these days are far more willing to take positions on games and almost no bookmaker cares about balanced books. They have banned or limited the action they really don't want and the national books look at risk across states so they don't have to worry about local risk.

william hill has different lines with NJ and nevada
caesars the same lines with NJ and nevada
golden Nugget - Not the same as Nevada - uses SB tech ..sort of a copy of the resorts casino line with a few -105 games per week
hard rock- not the same as Nevada - uses GIG - wide margins
MGM - does not look like the Nevada lines Mirage on don best --- NJ - worthless extra wide margins - IGT ( Ladbrokes ) from UK

Nevada did not move the cream of the crop books to NJ ... hopefully CG tech , SuperBook ( WestGate ) & Wynn show up like what was said in the news.

Of course, there is some movement of "money", "handle" and "action" from Nevada bettors to NJ and other states.

Guys like Krackman, Spanky, Voodoo, et al have spent time betting in NJ and have no doubt shifted their bets somewhat. Even our fearless leader, John Kelly, has broaden his horizons to include Iowa and Indiana sportsbooks and has thus has moved his action somewhat. There are probably some east coast bettors who have cut down on vacation trips to Vegas and reduced offshore/local action and instead bet in NJ, PA, RI, De, etc. Overall, relatively small tweaks to the total handle, but there is some effect.

Nevada easily eclipsed New Jersey's sports betting handle in September with $546.2 million compared to $445.6 million for NJ.

You can see the impact sports betting elsewhere is having on Nevada. Just check out room rates in Las Vegas for Super Bowl (oops, Big Game) weekend. Its one of the cheapest weekends of the winter season. Used to be super expensive and all the table limits would go way up, now people in other states aren't bothering to come out for the experience when they can do it at home or just go to a closer state to do the same thing.

I'm not comparing rates to the past, I'm comparing to rates in 2020, so has no read through on the economy. In January there is one weekend with lower rates than Big Game weekend. In February, that weekend is the cheapest. March is a lot more expensive because that's prime season. This used to be a weekend you had to book months in advance or find your preferred hotel was sold out. I think their inability to offer public parties is also a factor, the VIPs still get a nice setup if they come, but the average Joe paying for his room has only a few choices of free to enter parties where you have to buy everything. Maybe Caesars can hit up the NFL and say now that we are partners can you let up on us in Las Vegas.

I'm in Jersey now and it's so tough to gauge the activity just by what's going on in the book.
Yesterday was relatively slow. A bit of a line right before a game would start but no big deal.

Would really like to see a breakdown for all jurisdictions that offer mobile and counter betting.
What percent of action is live and what pct is mobile. I have to think Jersey has a much, much bigger
disparity between mobile and counter.

The in-person Vegas sports book experience is still tops by a wide margin.

Super Bowl is a whole different story though. You almost have to be using mobile betting due to the crazy
long lines of folks who take 10 minutes to make a bet.

The big names on the Strip get about 80/20 counter and app, but thats skewed because you can't make the huge wagers you read about on the app. The others are more like 75/25 app and counter. The state doesn't give numbers but the best guess is its slightly more counter than app because of the six and seven figure counter bets in Vegas. The stupid sign up and funding rules of Nevada also makes it really hard to ever get to 80/20 or better like NJ is seeing. Iowa and Indiana will get there as well. Most of my Vegas friends have one, maybe two apps they use. I have seven with some funds in them and I don't even live in Nevada.

Nevada to have SB numbers tomorrow. Rhode Island handle was down, but they avoided the catastrophic loss of last year.

Per Dave Tuley:

New Jersey sportsbooks handled nearly $54.3 million on #SB54, topping last year's $34.89 million; the books lost $4.28 million (-7.8 percent hold) after losing $4.57 million last year (note: Nevada has two losing #SuperBowls in 29 years, awaiting this year's figures)
@VSiNLive

Rhode Island reported #SB54 handle of $5.5 million, which was down from last year's $6.5 million (though that game involved regional fav New England), but it worked out better for the state as it won $805,000 from bettors after losing nearly $2.4 million last year

Per Todd Dewey, LVRJ

Nevada sportsbooks recorded second-largest Super Bowl win ($18.8M) and betting handle ($154.7M), per figures released Tuesday by state's Gaming Control Board. Handle (amount bet) beat last year's $145.9M but fell short of record $158.6M 2018. Record win $19.7M 2014 Sea-Den #RJnow

New Jersey gave away a ton of free money, offers and everything else trying to get bets in a tough competitive market. Nevada doesn't give away shit. That has to be why NJ keeps "losing" money on the game. I don't know for sure the operations there, but having sports betting and being able to host Super Bowl festivities in Atlantic City and at the other land-based books has to be a great profit driver and offset any losses on the game. AC a few years ago used to be a ghost town on Super Bowl weekend, now they have reasons to get visitors.

As for the handle level in Nevada, I recall Jimmy Vaccaro saying this some years ago, I think it was before the Broncos-Hawks game. To drive up handle, you need a bit of a spread between the teams. If its too close you don't get as much money line action and a lot more bettors feel like they are just guessing. If they guess, they bet less. For a recreational bettor, its much easier to say something like the Chiefs are much better than the Titans and feel confident laying points than saying my guess is the Chiefs are better than the Niners so I'll bet that.

the only thing is the sports books in jersey only give it away one time to the bettor. They don't give away much money either. Some people did not get anything.

Regulars like you maybe, but I got 6 different books emailing me and I haven't been to NJ in two months. Plus all the odds boosts and enticements to try to get the casual bettors to give it a go, I'm sure they had something to do with it even if it was just enticing more square action that figured to go on the favorite.

they send it to everyone... but you do not get $ again. I think they give everyone a set amount.. but installments. Now if you lose x amount they might give more to a person ..I am guessing here

"New Jersey has a much larger population than the Silver State and it boasts an increasingly competitive online sports betting sector. Online sportsbooks accounted for 87% of the handle in January, with the Meadowlands and Resorts Digital continuing to lead the charge."

"Last March, Nevada recorded the highest monthly sports betting handle on record when it took $596.8 million, but the race will be on to surge past the $600 million barrier this year. New Jersey is one of 19 states to legalize some form of sports wagering since the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in May 2018. It has thus far outgunned all of its rivals, including neighboring Pennsylvania. Nevada will release its January results later this month, and it will be interesting to see if it can surpass New Jersey’s total. It fell short of New Jersey’s handle for three months in 2019, but overall Nevada came out on top for the year."

More nonsense about a race that isn't really a race. On a good note however is I'm hearing from a key book that there will be a strong push coming to legalize remote registration for NV books. The strongest voices against it, Red Rock Resorts/Station, may stand down and let it happen.

Agree.... let me ask you something... say I put 1000 in an account . Lose it. Can i put more in online or do i have to go to the sports book in nevada?

Most require you to go to a book counter. William Hill gives you a lot more options, but they still require you to go to a business such as a 7/11 or a bar with a kiosk.

Oh there are some of the stupid credit cards that you can fund, but ridiculous fees on them. I think those are only on Station now.

WOW!! Nevada gaming has to change that ! New jersey does everything online. PointsBet has their own debit card too. LoL they had to make it easy for the bettors in jersey because the places in A.C. are 1- 2.5 hours away from northern jersey. Only a 2 places in northern jersey. It is the reason FanDuel does so well next to NYC for people betting cash. Banking transactions have no fees. ex Gov Christie got a A+ in new jersey.
