NHL 2019-2020

And it has begun! Preseason anyway. With Vegas winning 6-2 yesterday.

It seems 11 games are on today. And books have betting lines up for at least 5 of them:

I see no line for the Habs vs Devils game, which i read will be televised on TSN. The Devils also play the Bruins, both games at 4 PM, so the Devils will have to be in two places at the same time lol.

Anyone up for some preseason wagering? Otherwise, if i am not mistaken, the regular season takes off on October 2.

NHL at least has real players in its preseason games due to veteran rule requirements (at least 8 a game must be playing) and the inability to wholesale change those vets out later in the game as the NFL/MLB/NBA does. And yeah most preseason games have lines, but books never do when split squad games are going on. Thankfully split squad games are becoming much less common, lots of teams don't have any. All this being said pretty hard to be a sharp on preseason games because the line combos are all bizarre. Rarely will you see a regular season line from the year before being used in a preseason game so there's no real chemistry to be found.

Always huge line swings once the lineups are announced. If you stay on top of that information and lock it in immediately you can always get great value. Even eventual scalps, albeit for small limits.

I can't imagine anyone laying a big price in preseason, have no clue what people were thinking to make the Sens a big dog like that. I went and watched a game live a few days ago and you could see all the players who you know with be with the team were just making half efforts, while all the kids who have little shot at it were going 110%, making hits, focusing on defense and doing things you would want to win. So if someone is betting this after seeing the game lineups thinking oh this team looks more like the good players than the other, they need to re-examine that line of thought.

The Sens hung on to beat the Laffs on consecutive nights, this time 4-3. While the favs bounced back on Winsday, Sept.18, going 5-3 SU.

The biggest dog of the night, in this case NJ +160 @ NYR (Pinnacle closing lines @ SBR), won again.

For tonight's NHL action it is presently Dallas +177 @ the Avs who are the biggest dog of the night. Can they win 3 nights in a row?

https://www.sportsbookreview.com/betting-odds/nhl-hockey/?date=20190918

I wonder if Pinnacle will post regular season team by team over/under points total lines. The NHL season starts Oct. 2 while the NBA doesn't begin till Oct. 22, yet they've had NBA lines up for this type of prop bet for weeks.

They are available everywhere else. Maybe Pinnacle has some weird reason not to post them, maybe they don't think much of their NHL traders.

Any leans on season point totals X?

I am a die hard Kings fan. I know the team stinks. Their O/U opened at 73.5 and is now 74.5 - think the money is going the right way. This team is nowhere near a Cup contender but I think they top 74.5. NOT BY MUCH. I think around 76-77. Barely OVER but I do think OVER cashes

The biggest dog on the board won for the third day in a row on Thursday. Dallas (+174 ML) defeated Colorado 2-1.

Can the biggest dog win for the 4th day in a row. So far it's looking to be Buffalo +168 @ the Laffs who are 0-2 in the preseason.

Here's an opinion on that game tonight:

"In a not-all-that-surprising twist, the Sabres look to be saving their best players for the home game tomorrow night, and so the Leafs are left to confront this preseason-ass roster. Having lost twice in two nights to the Senators, who are not an NHL team at the best of times, that’s no reason to get complacent."

That's precisely the thinking you have to be careful about. The vets are not going that hard at the moment. Those fighting for a job are going balls out. And the few games I have watched a bit of have had some bizarre line combos, something like a rookie, a journeyman and a star player.

Now there are no sure things, maybe the Leafs are a little pissed and embarrassed at the moment from the losses so they might show up. But no way I'm paying for that hope. Maybe next weeks games are a little more form, but this week is all about the dogs.

Good points, WildBill.

The Leafs-Sabres have somewhat of a regular season rivalry, but i don't know if that will apply to the preseason games tonight & tomorrow in Buffalo.

If anyone is looking for a early scheduling angle this year:

Colorado opens the season at home. Four games in ten days. Calgary, Minnesota, Boston, and Arizona.

They then go on a six game road trip, (12 days). To Washington, Pittsburgh, Florida, Tampa Bay, (3rd game in 4), St Louis, and Vegas. After the Vegas Friday matinee they have to travel home and play the next night against Anaheim. A brutal scheduling quirk for sure. After the St. Louis game they do have three days off so perhaps they stop at home on the way to Vegas? Otherwise they have a extended Vegas vacation before playing the Knights, and you know how that will translate.

It doesn’t look like Rantanen will be here anytime soon and that’s one big hole to fill. Rantanen wants Marner numbers and the Avs are offering over a million/year below that. Avs scored 260 goals last year. Their top line accounted for 106 of them.

They did pick up Kadri and Burakovsky but it’s far short to make up for the lost chemistry and production of MacKinnon, Landeskog, and Rantanen.

Keep an eye out for split squads and bet against the team if they do turn up one fine day.
Liking the overs. Habs doing well with some of their prospects and a fair number of regulars
in these games. Going Monday to Mtl-Toronto for the Auston Matthews show.

Now that all teams have made most of their cuts form should follow a little more. Still would never lay a big number though on a meaningless game, but would not blanket bet the dogs.

That is pretty hard to believe the Leafs are leaving out like their top 10 players even with all the guys sent to Junior or AHL out. There aren't that many roster spots up for grabs in Toronto, this might be a mismatch but still just hate the thought of laying -185 in the preseason.

There's been a lot of line movement. The biggest dog now is Detroit +188 with 3 others not much less, +170, +175, +178 ATM.

By the closing Pinnacle lines at SBR the 3 biggest dogs lost last night, including Detroit +188, Phily +177 & Ottawa +190. The 4th biggest dog, Toronto +174, won 3-0 over Montreal, while overall dogs were 1-4 SU on the day:

https://www.sportsbookreview.com/betting-odds/nhl-hockey/?date=20190923

Home teams were 4-1 and, as usual, totals were a mixture of high, low & mid level scoring games. 1P o/u 1.5 went 3-2. A low scoring game, 3-0, involving the LAK was no surprise. And likewise a high scoring game, 6-4, involving the Sens.

ATM the biggest dog of the day, which is 0-4 L4, is the Jets +167 @ the Flames.

BOL with your action, guys. It's only 9 days till the games that count for something begin.

Jets very thin upfront tonight, but bringing a solid core group of dman including their best Dman.Calgary looks to be icing what appears something close to their opening day roster. The unanimous concencus on a Winnipeg Jets forum I frequent is that the Jets are going to get throttled which usually means the Jets will find a way to win.

Pinnacle finally got their NHL season team total points lines up today. Though, unlike with their NBA futures, i don't see anywhere on the site where any NHL futures odds can be seen, except when one is logged in.

The Jets under looks like it got hammered, though only about 300 CAD limits as of yesterday (may go up closer to Oct.2):

Jets over 96.5 +158
Jets under 96.5 -190

Biggest dog of the day, Jets +179 (Pinnacle closing line @ SBR) lost for the 5th day in a row. ATM it's Detroit +186 that's offering the biggest underdog price. Will the biggest dog finally get another win tonight or lose its 6th straight.

https://www.sportsbookreview.com/betting-odds/nhl-hockey/?date=20190925

Favs & HTs were 4-2 yesterday. First period unders (1.5) 4-2. Total goals scored in the 6 games were rather low at 2,3,4,5,6 & 9. A high scoring 9 goal TB game should not surprise, nor low scoring games involving the Blues & Islanders. Though one might expect several more than 2 goals combined from Calgary vs Winnipeg.

By the closing Pinnacle lines at SBR the biggest dog yesterday was a winner with Colorado +189 @ Vegas winning 4-1. That broke a 5 game losing streak & brings the biggest dog of the day record to 4-5 L9. So far today it is Calgary +144 at SJ in the late game that qualifies as the largest dog of the day.

Yesterday favs were 6-3 SU & HTs 5-4. Totals were a mix of low & high scoring games with Chicago going over the 1P total but under the 6.5 total for the game in a 6-0 loss at home to the Caps. Last year the Blackhawks were well known for their high scoring games & games that went over the 1P total of 1.5. In other games last night i suppose it was no surprise that the LAK's & Bruins games went under & the Sens game over again. Though one might expect more than 3 goals out of a Habs-Leafs game, at least during the regular season.

Blues and Wings play in front of their 700 closest friends in the world’s oldest in-use indoor ice arena. Craig Berube describes the ice as being a smaller surface than what they are used to.

Under 6 -115

Nice call. And lucky

4-1 thru 2P........ends 4-1

By the closing Pinnacle lines at SBR the biggest dog yesterday was a 1-4 loser with Calgary +156 @ the Shark Tank. The biggest dog of the day record went to 4-6 L9 & 1-5 L6. So far today it is the LAK +165 at Vegas in the late game that qualifies as the largest dog of the day. Will we see another Kings game go under the total? It is set at 6.

Yesterday the dogs & road teams had a good day, going 4-3 SU. First period under 1.5's continued their good run, going 5-2 after being 4-5 & 4-1-1 the previous 2 days. Those unders have generally been priced as underdogs.

By the closing Pinnacle lines at SBR the biggest dog yesterday was a 3-2 winner with the Kings +178 @ Sin City. The biggest dog of the day record went to 5-6 L11 & 2-5 L7 & 2-1 L3. So far today it is Chicago +235 at Boston in the early game that qualifies as the largest dog of the day. Chicago is an over team while Boston is an under team & the total is set at 6.

Yesterday the dogs had an even better day than on Thursday, winning 4 of 5 games SU. The road teams also were 4-1. The LAK continued to produce unders as the total of 3-2 went under 6. First period under 1.5's continued their good run, going 3-2 after being 5-2, 4-5 & 4-1-1 the previous 3 days. Those unders have generally been priced as underdogs.
