Understood.

But I've seen so many sports books in Nevada close before they should.

Terrible customer service.

South Point has the right idea by going 24 hours.

Agree John. Numerous times I've found myself heading down to the sportsbook to cash a ticket and peruse the next day's lines only to find out the book is already closed for the day. South Point has it right.

NJ sports betting: Monmouth Park alive with activity on Father's Day -

https://www.app.com/story/sports/ho...th-park-alive-activity-fathers-day/698277002/

The lines were just as long at the sports betting kiosks just outside the William Hill Sports Bar They were also long at the pari-mutuel betting windows for the racing. The food lines were long too, especially at Max's Hot Dogs in the left corner of the grandstand area and the picnic area was also packed.

The attendance of 23,768 was 5,241 larger than the 18,527 that attended on Father's Day last year.

The handle figures were up all around, too.

The total handle of $4,863,502 was $742,314 more than last year's total of $4,121,188.

The on-track handle of $973,402 was $142,672 more than last year's total of $830,730 and the off track handle of $3,890,100 was $599,642 larger than last year.

Re: NJ sports book news

Discussion of how line action might be affected by multijurisdictional legal sports betting in the US:

http://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/i...-challenges-legal-us-sports-betting-expansion

With regard to sharp players taking advantage of different numbers in different jurisdictions, it's worthwhile to note paragraph (b) of the Wire Act:

(b) Nothing in this section shall be construed to prevent the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce of information for use in news reporting of sporting events or contests, or for the transmission of information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers on a sporting event or contest from a State or foreign country where betting on that sporting event or contest is legal into a State or foreign country in which such betting is legal.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1084 (emphasis added)

If I'm construing that safe harbor provision correctly, at least the Wire Act will not prohibit a betting outfit or player in Nevada coordinating with operatives in New Jersey to take advantage of local line variances in, for example, a match between the Eagles and the Raiders.

In-state rules regarding beard betting perhaps may be a different matter, but I'm not sure that those necessarily would be violated by all possible arrangements that might be created to take advantage of the line variances, over and above simply having a runner in another state.

Nor have I seen the specific NJ, Delaware or Mississippi rules, if any, addressing beard betting.

The entity/fund betting that was authorized fairly recently in Nevada perhaps could be another way around in-state beard betting prohibition issues.

But, as I read 18 USC 1084(b) on the fly, the federal Wire Act at least may not prohibit such state to state bettor coordination seeking to exploit line variances between two US jurisdictions where sports betting is legal.

Re: NJ sports book news

Question: When will these states offer mobile wagering like Nevada?

Maybe Top is on top of that. If I see something specifically on that I'll post it (but being back at a day job crimps that sort of thing).

I would expect that mobile will be offered fairly quickly within every jurisdiction where sports betting is legal. The operators -- i.e., basically the same outfits as are out here and/or ones with at least comparable sophistication -- certainly have the capability to do it within any state where it's legal. Barring a horse-and-buggy mentality in a legislature and/or state regulatory agency, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be authorized -- or at least not explicitly prohibited -- from the getgo.

Mobile wagering & maybe online wagering meaning websites will be starting in less than 30 days in new Jersey. They aren't too specific if it is one or both.
Methods of payment are checks 14 days & PayPal or something like it . Ocean casino will have William hill as their bookie. Hard Rock will have possible CGT ....both casinos opening June 28, 2018

The brick and mortar outlets will attempt to push everyone to the mobile app.

That's the strategy of CGT in Las Vegas.

It’s pretty much a key component of the business model for all offshores.

Try and imagine opening a restaurant where your tables are full sometimes and empty sometimes.

But you have a quiet table in the back and there’s a quiet gentleman back their ordering cases of French champagne every night.
Getting 2 or 3 whales coming in your restaurant each night drinking champagne and you’re making bank.
That’s the metaphor that sums up what the online betting potential is to sports books.

Good read here.

Agree JK... The one reason is mobile gives a better location where the person is located. Website's could be covered up by the bettors or ISP location could be at the main switching station instead of at your house. Casinos could then divide up the pie & taxes better with your exact location .

Heard a good story about sports betting agents bragging about the number of clients each one serviced one football season.

One guy boasted of 50 customers, another said he had more than 75 customers and a third claimed he had more than 100 players on his sheet.

The agent who made the most money that season was an agent who had only six bettors, one of whom lost $11 million.

True story.

Re: NJ sports book news

If, as I suggest in post #87, the Wire Act does not prohibit sports bets being placed from NV to NJ, and vice versa, would be interesting to see them set up mobile apps where you could bet in either state -- on previously set up accounts -- so long as you were in either state at the time of the bet. Potentially bigger handle and more balanced two-way action.

Do that across multiple legal states, and you start getting toward a national, almost-online-like, market.

That's pointless. The sportsbook hubs are run out of Vegas and offer the same lines to all books regardless of their location. They aren't going to be offering different lines to their shops across state lines.

The only difference so far will be Betfair at the Meadowlands. There is no Vegas presence for Betfair but they will probably end up using the same lines as their offshore book (not their exchange).

When mobile wagering is enabled in NJ, you'll likely already be able to use your existing account from either NV or NJ - depending on where you're currently located.

Re: NJ sports book news

Monkey, my discussion was against the backdrop of Purdum's article postulating that they might shade the lines differently based on location. If they ultimately don't do that, then, yes, it doesn't matter. It'sperhaps a little early to pound the table as to how things actually will shake out. I was exploring his premise. If they do shade lines based on location, bettors are going to look for ways to get bets down in multiple jurisdictions, which as I suggest would tend to hammer out the variances by giving rise to more two-way action.

That has very little chance of ever happening. That would require a massive infrastructure change.

Just the fact that they would now have multiple jurisdictions to balance risk takes away that very "homer effect" that he was talking about anyway.

Currently just Pro sports offered, right?

Would love to see them post Coll Football + Coll Basketball. But I guess that would open the pandora's box of shaving points.

Re: NJ sports book news

I thought that the only legally imposed limitation under the current NJ law was betting on games with NJ college teams.

Have the NJ books not been putting up at least futures for CFB and CBB?

They've been doing all that betting on college games out here for years -- including on NV teams -- and Pandora's box has remained closed tighter than, well . . . .

I agree with Roxy in the end that NJ books if they want to take a lead will open 8am eastern time. Maybe not this NFL year but the ones down the road.
The casinos in NJ will see a nice opportunity to open early before Vegas & make more money with the 3 hour jump in time. Once all the casinos open in NJ and are online with an easy deposit & withdrawal method people will discover they do not have to wait 11 days for their money off a Monday night NFL game anymore to get paid with credit. PPH are in trouble in NJ. Expect them to offer -105 more often to keep players . Once sports betting spreads more it could hurt offshore as well. People want 100% security & less hoops . Offshore will probably counter attack to keep deposits coming in.

Could see myself keeping 5d for some props and baseball overnights but wont be much reason to keep much in there as a rec guy, once the app/online is live

Stopped in yesterday afternoon, was quiet, a total of 20 people in the book, no lines, 6 tellers open maybe 7, was in and out. Boards are good. Parking not an issue

Teller wasn't the quickest. Made 3 bets, just had to wait about 15-20 seconds for approval from the system, not a person teller told me before he handed me the tix, which he did. Went 2-1 (Lost under 7 Red sox)

No complaints so far with anything I saw an did yesterday, nice job NJ!!
